Stella McCartney’s Olympic ‘Challenge’: Team Uniforms

Flynet

The Olympics may still be two years away, but designer Stella McCartney has already begun a special race of her own: She has just been named the creative director for the British Olympic team. The designer, 38, is to head up Team GB’s Adidas ranges for the London-based games in 2012, the company announced Wednesday. “I have to make it look good on TV, I have to make it feel good for the athletes, I have to make it work–technically it has to do its job,” she says of the “million challenges” ahead. But the designer knows when it comes to the Olympics, fashion can’t get in the way of winning medals. “The main thing I want do is not in any way get involved with making their performance not its best,” Stella says in a statement. While it’s still too soon to preview any sketches, the married mother-of-three, who is expecting baby number four in the fall, says she will be “working with incredibly technical fabrics.” She already has the thumbs up from British Olympic and World Champion cyclist Victoria Pendleton, who says a prestigious marker is being laid down. “It is really important as the host nation to set the standards,” she said. “To have a British designer, inputting into the British kit is going to be very special.” McCartney is already well-known for her women’s sports-inspired performance range, Adidas by Stella McCartney. –Simon Perry

Would You Wear a Turban like Ashley Olsen?

Brian Zak/Sipa

We can always count on trendsetter Ashley Olsen to keep things interesting on the red carpet, and a recent appearance at the launch party for the new YSL Belle D’Opium fragrance did not disappoint! Ashley topped off her buttoned-up trench and black pumps with a quirky vintage headscarf in a bold, graphic print. Ever since Carrie Bradshaw brought back the turban in Sex and the City 2, we’ve loved adding headscarves to our summer wardrobe–especially on the beach. But we wonder, is hers too much for most? Is it a look that only Ashley and Carrie can pull off, or is it a cool, chic look that any fashionista can rock? Tell us: Would you wear a turban like Ashley’s?

Madonna Makes Ordinary Look Oh-So-Chic in Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall Campaign

Courtesy Dolce & Gabbana

Madonna is being cast in striking black-and-white again as part of Dolce & Gabbana’s latest campaign. The fall/winter ads, like the spring campaign for the Italian label, evoke the softer and more ordinary side of the superstar as she performs a host of domestic (read: very un-diva-like) tasks. Clad in a sexy black bustier dress, the pop icon is portrayed as a mother, returning from the grocery store with a teenage son, and raising her glass around a family-filled table dressed in a lace sheath. In what looks like a sequel to the spring ads, the newest family portrait continues the Italian fashion story. “This campaign is special as it shows Madonna as a real life domestic woman – mother, daughter, granddaughter, sister,” says Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. “Madonna to us is an extraordinary woman and we wanted to tell a story.” Tell us: What do you think of Madonna’s Dolce & Gabbana ads?Gillian Koenig

PHOTO DOUBLE TAKE: Is Gerard Butler Channeling Billy Ray Cyrus?

Smith/Steinberg/Pacific Coast News; Fame

Talk about seeing double! Billy Ray Cyrus is no longer the only Hollywood hottie who’s keeping it business in the front, party in the back. Scottish hunk Gerard Butler made us look twice when we spotted him rocking a Cyrus-worthy mullet of his own while filming his new thriller Machine Gun Preacher in Michigan. Snapped on Monday sporting the new do, the actor completed the biker-appropriate look with a vest and Harley-Davidson T-shirt, while Billy Ray accessorized his current back-swept coif with a sleeveless T-shirt, shades and a long necklace. Though we’re used to the look on Miley‘s dad — who can forget his mega-mullet in the “Achy Breaky Heart” era? — we have to admit we’re a little startled seeing ladies-man Gerard’s signature cropped hair and touch of scruff replaced by this new look. Tell us: Who rocks his mullet better: Billy Ray or Gerard?

Lady Gaga Gets Covered in Hello Kitties

Markus Klinko and Indrani/Bravo

Lady Gaga is no stranger to fusing fashion and fuzzy creatures, famously rocking an Animal skirt last year. But it looks like the outrageous singer is trading in her Muppets for another childhood favorite: Hello Kitty! On Tuesday night’s episode of Bravo’s Double Exposure, Lady Gaga took Hello Kitty to a sexy new level while shooting the 35th Anniversary campaign for the character. At the London shoot, the songstress dons this gown adorned with stuffed Hello Kitty dolls–and that’s not all. From sky-high Hello Kitty-covered pumps to a bedazzled Kitty belt, Gaga adds her own sexy touch to the girly cat. Check out this sneak peek clip of Lady Gaga’s Hello Kitty suit. Tell us: What do you think of Gaga’s new fixation, Hello Kitty? Do you prefer the Muppets?–Andrea DeSimone

Eva Mendes Doesn’t Want to Just Be ‘Sexy’

Courtesy Allure

With a slew of racy Calvin Klein ads and steamy movie roles under her belt, it’s hard not to think of Eva Mendes as a sex symbol. But it’s a label that the actress seems reluctant to accept. “I’d love for my ambition and will and intellect and sense of humor to define me as well,” Eva tells Allure in its August issue. “I’m definitely responsible for the image that I put out there. But it does become frustrating, because I don’t want ‘sexy’ to be my defining characteristic,” she says. The actress’s own idea of sexy is surprisingly low-key in comparison to the bombshell characters she frequently assumes in front of the cameras. “To me, sexy is either nude or with very basic Calvin Klein underwear, and maybe a white, ribbed tank top with no bra,” says Mendes, who notably wore Dolce & Gabbana before, during and after her Allure cover shoot in New York City. But more than any physical characteristic, Eva credits her sex appeal to attitude. “I have worked hard to love myself, and I do. And I think that’s what people to respond to with me.” To hear more of Eva’s interview, pick up the August issue of Allure or check out allure.com. –Gillian Koenig
