Plus Size Model Crystal Renn Takes On The Critics

Crystal Renn was returning from a photoshoot in Paris for French Vogue earlier this month when she got some troubling news. Retouched photos of the plus size model, who famously overcame anorexia and exercise bulimia 7 years ago before rising to the top of her profession, had been released showing the size 10 beauty looking shockingly thin. “You want to laugh because you know it’s not you, but then you realize everyone out there seeing these images thinks it is,” Renn tells PEOPLE. “I was obviously upset and concerned. I don’t want some girl who’s recovering from anorexia to see the picture and think I don’t think that you can be any size and be beautiful. That’s completely not what I’m about.” But Renn, 24, is the first to admit that she is slimmer now than when she first relaunched her career as a plus size model at 5’9” and 175 lbs. “Over the years I had made my way down to 165 lbs. and a size 12,” says Renn, who has walked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier and Chanel and booked campaigns for Dolce & Gabbana. In the last year, she slimmed down to 150 lbs. and a size 10 when she finally began exercising again after 7 years during which she avoided all workouts. But discovering “fun” activities like hiking and yoga helped her take a more balanced approach to fitness in the past year, she says. “I used to workout obsessively for 8 hours a day,” she admits. “Now, I want to do something fun that’s good for my body.” For more information on Crystal Renn’s body controversy, pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE on stands now. –Charlotte Triggs

Oh mY on

I can’t believe they consider size 10 plus size…what kind of world do we live in when size 10 is large

Leslie on

I’m sorry…..she’s a size 10 and is a PLUS SIZE model?! Since when is a 10 plus size????
So I guess that anything over a size 12 must be considered hippo sized.
No wonder so many girls are starving themselves to death.

Size 10, Size 6, Size 12 – whatever. She looks like a model to me plain and simple. She looks 20 times more beautiful than Size 0 Kate Moss. Good for you Crystal. You’re gorgeous inside and out!

The fashion world is a filthy elitist world. What other industry can LEGALLY get away with telling a person they are not tall enough and not underweight enough for a job? On top of the ludicrous weight and height requirements, it’s painfully white washed and full of racism. Look at Salma hayek she could NEVER be a model yet I promise you she looks better in clothes than most models and the majority of men would agree with me. If you are an actual artist then you;d be talented enough to make a line and show it on a runway using women of all races, heights and healthy sizes until you can do so you are nothing more than an automated monkey hanging clothes on a human hanger. Women of the world need to stand up to this BS and stop supporting it. I for one refuse to support an industry that doesn’t support my fellow women and that is coming from a woman who is naturally size 0 and is sick of how much this industry forces thinness down peoples throats. I want my fellow women to know how beautiful they are to feel good about themselves and the fashion industry does the exact opposite. For an industry that thinks of itself as so creative and forward thinking it manages to be the most discriminatory industry in the world and that is quite an accomplishment.

I don’t know about everywhere else in the world, but take from someone who shops the plus sizes in the USA, nowhere in the plus size department is there a 10 or a 12 and very few 14’s. It is just outrageous to call Crystal a plus size model because she doesn’t wear a single digit size (ie… 0, 1, 2, etc.).

Shes plus size? Wow, what has this world come to? Crystal, you are beautiful! Size 2 is ideal to critics nowadays so none of us are ideal but we’re better than them. If you got it, flaunt it! I’m a size 10, 5’1, 150 lbs & guess what critics?
I feel beautiful. There’s more beauty inside than out though.

Why can’t all models be size 6, 8, 10 or 12? These sizes are slim to regular (even size 4 would be progress). Please, a 10 is not Plus Size. Give me a break!

Really? on

Really? If she is “plus sized” then the rest of the women in the world must be certified elephants. Being at 5’9″ and 150lbs gives you a 22 BMI, which means you’re normal with room to spare. If she doesn’t want other women to feel bad, maybe she (and PEOPLE) shouldn’t be calling herself fat. Give me a break, nice job.

I hate to crush you guys even more, but anything over size 8 is considered plus size, yet the average woman’s size is a 10. Unfortunately that’s the way that this world works. I agree that no matter what size, she looks gorgeous and I hope she keeps sticking it to the critics!
