EXCLUSIVE BEHIND-THE-SCENES: Julia Roberts's Lancôme Debut

After likening her ambassadorship with Lancôme to “every girl’s dream,” Julia Roberts is finally unveiling her dreamy debut print ad for Définicils Precious Cells Amplifying Mascara–and she’s giving PEOPLE an exclusive behind-the-scenes look. Shot by Mario Testino in a private apartment in the TriBeCa neighborhood of New York City last winter, the ad presents an ethereal take upon which the classic French beauty brand was founded. The campaign is scheduled to bow in August issues of major fashion, beauty and lifestyle publications. The $29 lash-building product is currently available exclusively at Nordstrom stores but will expand to Lancôme counters across the nation this August. I think her ad is great she is such a beautiful woman.

Sheila on

I think she looks fabulous. She has a classic beauty look that is timeless and she makes me feel inspired at 43 years old that I too can have long, beautiful, full lashes!

Patty on

wwwwaaaaayyyyyy too much photoshop / air brushing. she’s a beautiful woman, but she doesn’t look it in this picture … she looks like a was figure … too bad !

Patty on

that should have said WAX figure …

T on

She is a lovely person and her inner beauty shows in her face. I think it’s a shame that they’ve airbrushed her face to the point that it looks plastic.

AO on

This ad does not do her justice! She has a beautiful laugh–which they should have used… and her nose looks too big from that angle. The article picture of her looks better!

JennaS on

I think Julia is beautiful, but whatever happened to her tooting being green. Lancome is not a green brand at all! It uses parabens and un-natural ingredients, any many of the ingredients are by-products of oil or not natural ingredients, including the packaging. What ever happened to being gorgeously green!

D on

She is very airbrushed!! I know they are trying to sell Lancome products…but…geez….let’s look a bit more natural…that’s what women WANT to see. She is 40 something….right? Also along with being too airbrushed…her hair shade is too blonde, again, to contrite…not very natural looking.

I think The Pretty Woman’s Lancome Debut is great, I wish Julia Roberts the best with Lancome!

AD on

She looks lovely but I prefer her with darker hair.

While Julia is a pretty face, I am amazed how the beauty industry will go so far to have the public buy their products and promise far fetching results. For example, mascara. Any company will say that if you use this product, you will have “long, beautiful lashes.” Bull. 100 percent of the print ads has the models wearing FALSE EYELASHES. Seems like I have tried everything out there and my eye lashes are by no means lush, long and full.

jackie on

I’ve never thought Julia Roberts was what you’d call pretty. Her mouth is way too big and she’s not particularly feminine. She’s a good actress and an attractive woman but beautiful? Mais non.

Elda on

i love her eyes!! nice shot!

Jenice on

When will we get “real” women to pose. If I could see a real 43 year old with great lashes then I’d purchase the product. With a dozen makeup artists and airbrushing, my 60+ face would look good too. When will these company’s get “real”….

Dianna on

i to think she looks fake and i to want to know why shes blonde? pretty sure she has red hair.

Jae on

She’s a beautiful woman and all the airbrushing is hiding that. (and her hair is way to blonde)
Let the imperfections show. I bet it would inspire more women if she looked more normal.

Marcia on

I agree with all the air brushing comments. It’s phony looking. She is still a beautiful woman. The photo doesn’t need to be “doctored” It looks un-natural. Us 40 year old girls can spot it a mile away.
GO NATURAL, LANCOME!!!!!

Irene Olson on

Way too photoshopped and her mouth looks sooo Botoxed, even though it is not. She is a lovely woman and this picture is too fake!!

she looks like an overglammed barbie doll. not one of her best…just my opinion

LeeAnn on

Come on folks, she’s a year younger than I am, she’ll be 43 in October, at this stage of life you have a bit of crows feet and your skin is not this smooth and luminous. She looks like she’s in her 30′s. Airbrushing till the cows come home on this…unreal. I like Julia, but why didn’t Lancome choose a real model – how about going old school and choosing Christie Brinkley, who is no longer under contract with Cover Girl, Kim Alexis, or even Rene Russo (who was a model at one time). Julia is million-dollar smile and sells magazines, that’s the bottom line with all of these cosmetic campaigns. I long for the days of Lauren Hutton, Isabella Rossellini, etc. when these lines used real models.

Cheryl on

Well, I use Lancome myself, and wish I looked that good! But, believe it’s a little too much airbrushing. However, I WILL try the new mascara, and hopefully, will have beautiful lashes as well. Glad she’s spokeswoman for Lancome.

debbie on

Too posed, washed out and not crazy about the blonde locks. At least her eye lashes look normal and not fake as opposed to the commercials out now for mascara. I would definitely redo the pic and show more personality!

DLS on

Julia is so beautiful, I didn’t see the need for any airbrushing. This is a little dissapointing. I know the purpose is to sell the mascara, but she does look like a plastic doll.

Julia…you should be ashamed of yourself. Once again the advertisers are aiming for the stick figure blonde locks perfect face … over 40 look. And they stuck your face in there and then they changed it. If you had any chutzpah at all, you’d quit.

julia on

i think it’s crazy they chose julia roberts who usually looks like she got dressed in a dumpster..the air brushing in the ad is so over the top. Julia is yesterday, no ten years ago.

Tonya on

Im truely saddened by the fact taht she has linked herself with a company who test on animals

How much was spent on Photshop? She’s 44 this year; consumers are asked to spend $30 for mascara from a woman trying to look 20. Get real Lancome.

Doesn’t look real. Julia is pretty, not how she was when she was younger but this just looks so fake. Airbrushing much? Ya think?

Why did they hire the beautiful Julia Roberts if they were going to change her perfectly wonderful, natural looks into a flat-looking piece of porcelain? The picture is lovely, I guess, but it doesn’t look like her. I wish she had had the courage to say, “Look, I’ll take your money, pose for your pictures, but I’m a 40 something Mom, so let’s keep it real.” And real women would totally respond to that. But this ad? Yet another example of looks that are simply unattainable.

I would never buy her mascara. Plastic face, plastic hair, and she is not the image that Lancome should have for their classy products!!
She is a hippie!!

Renee on

I think it’s sad that Julia Roberts would accept an ambassadorship with Lancome when I’m fairly certain she wouldn’t use any of their products on her own–in her own home. She has long been a vocal proponent of organic/natural beauty products (she once did a feature with Oprah), and I find it hypocritical of her to falsely support Lancome’s products–all for the sake of making more money! I would think, that in her position of great stature, she would be more about encouraging people NOT to use toxic/carcinogenic products! Shameful.

STOP TESTING COSMETICS ON ANIMALS! IT IS CRUEL AND IMMORAL.

The photo of Julia Roberts showing the mascara isnt the best ive seen her look to be honest. The black eyeliner too harsh, the pink-nude lips too pale, and mouth is at a funny angle, making her top lip look out of proportion, the new blonde hair is too typical – her natural auburn colour far nicer. For such a natural beauty, they should have kept her look natural and soft, maybe bordering on smokey eyes, with more colour on her lips. Very air-brushed photos. Well… you did ask for comments…

Well, firstly the comments ive read on here (her nose looks too big,too much airbrushing), are you all perfect? All i can think of i is, if i could have my photos airbrushed i certainly would, im sure deep down we all would have something airbrused, and im sure julia isnt any different from you and me. secondly its a mascara advert-and i can assume its the lashes on a beautiful woman they want to come across not imperfections (yes unfortunately its all about looks isnt it with magazines & companies?)- But we all can be hypercritical of others famous or not. OMG its a mascara advert for goodness sake!
