Princess Diana’s Daring Black Dress Up for Auction

Anwar Hussein/WireImage

It is the dress that launched the young blushing Lady Diana Spencer onto the world as not only Prince Charles’ fiancée, but also as a budding fashion icon who dared to break the royal rules by wearing black to a formal event other than a funeral. The black taffeta gown, worn by Diana in March 1981, also put the young design team of David and Elizabeth Emanuel on the map, beginning a partnership that culminated in the princess-to-be’s much-copied wedding dress. Today, the gown–and a prototype of the fairytale bridal dress–are being auctioned off in London and estimated to fetch up to $150,000. Posing with the black dress Monday, Elizabeth Emanuel reminisced to PEOPLE of the night that the 19-year-old Diana became a front-page star as she joined Prince Charles for her first official appearance with him. “This was really a shadow of what she was to become in terms of a fashion icon,” Emanuel says. “It was the first time that people had seen her looking like a princess. Like a movie star. And grown up.” Despite there being a big political story that day, the emerging Diana “took over all of the front pages,” Emanuel recalls. Soon, it became obvious that the palace would have to confirm what the Emanuels already knew — that they were to make Diana’s wedding dress. And, the history of that creation is included in the sale going live this morning, via London’s Kerry Taylor Auctions. –Simon Perry

Whitney Port’s Chic Makeup Secrets From the MTV Movie Awards

Matt Baron/BEImages

To flawlessly finish her yellow Yigal Azrouel dress at last night’s MTV Movie Awards, Whitney Port decided to go subtle yet chic for her makeup. So the 23-year-old star of The City enlisted some help from makeup artist pal Amy Nadine, who today shared the step-by-step process of how she achieved Whitney’s MTV look, chiming in as a a guest blogger on the star’s web site. “Because Whitney’s Yigal Azrouel dress was such a statement dress, I wanted to create a beautifully soft make-up look that wouldn’t compete,” she wrote on Port’s blog. To achieve a flawless complexion, Nadine applied Giorgio Armani Face Fabric Radiance in #1 with a foundation brush and then followed it with a sweep of Armani’s Loose Powder in #0. For the eyes, Nadine drew a thick and heavy line on Port’s upper eyelids, using CoverGirl LiquiLine “for a 60′s Mad Men-inspired” look. And to add a little flush, Nadine applied CoverGirl Simply Ageless in Plush Peach to the apple of Whitney’s cheeks, while using OCC Lip Tar in Hush to complete the flirty yet high-fashion look. How to make your first public appearances after a lot of personal difficulties? With a terrific sense of humor and looking hotter than ever in a series of sexy little black dresses, if you are Sandra Bullock. For her surprise appearance at Saturday’s Spike TV Guy’s Choice Awards in L.A., Bullock wore a slim-fitting short-sleeved leather dress by Elie Saab, which she jokingly referred to while accepting her award for Troops Choice for Entertainer of the Year. “I would sing,” said the star, addressing the servicemen who voted for the honor. “But you’ve seen enough pain in your lifetime. I would dance — I’m a pretty good dancer — but…the dress is pretty tight.” Then for last night’s MTV Movie Awards, the 45-year-old beauty chose another stunning little black dress–a glimmering, plunging-back mini by Oday Shakar. While Bullock, with her hair pulled back in a chic, long ponytail, looked absolutely flawless on stage, her Proposal costar Betty White had just one piece of sage fashion advice for the star: “Honey, don’t ever wear that dress backwards.” –Marissa Patlingrao Cooley

Frank Micelotta/MTV/PictureGroup;Jeff Kravitz/Filmmagic

It might have been a night filled with over-the-top outfits and bright blue hair dos, but last night’s MTV Movie Awards wouldn’t have been complete without some Team Edward vs. Team Jacob rivalry between Twilight‘s main men, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. And this time, the debate extended to their award show style. Rob Pattinson, who caused quite a storm when he buzzed his hair last month, sported a dark denim jacket over a white v-neck shirt matched with a pair of loose-fitting khakis. Lautner went a little sleeker, pairing his white T-shirt with a sharp blue leather jacket and trim dark jeans. With both stars rocking out in cool laid-back styles, we can’t decide which heartthrob looked best. Tell us: Whose MTV Movie Award Show outfit did you like better: Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner? Katy Perry’s a True-Blue California Girl

Gregg DeGuire/MTV/PictureGroup; Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic; Charley Gallay/WireImage

Bright blue hair was the only constant among Katy Perry’s trio of wardrobe switcheroos at the MTV Movie Awards last night, but each look channeled “California Gurls” – which just happens to be the title of her newest hit song. Perry hit the red carpet in a semi-nude, super-short and strategically bedazzled Zuhair Murad dress before taking the stage in sequined short-shorts and a cleavage-friendly retro bikini top to perform her latest hit, then slipped into a skintight Hervé Léger dress with an even more revealing neckline for the rest of the show. Of her final frock of the night, Perry told PEOPLE “I definitely couldn’t perform in it, because then I would be giving away way too much!” For her performance, Perry decided to channel the lyrics of her song. “I had to represent “California Gurls” by wearing Daisy Dukes and a bikini on top – California Girls aren’t just all naked!” So what defines a “California Gurl”? “We are talking about girls who are just fine, fresh, fierce and have an inner confidence that comes out of them and they are always down to earth, always ready to party and they have a little sun-kissed tan.” As for the blue hair, which she also sported at the Kids Choice Awards in March and on her new album cover, Perry said “I am going to be Smurfette one day.” Perry thinks her final look of the night was the one that fiancé Russell Brand favored most. “He likes boobs, so let’s just say he wants me to keep it on!” –Scott Huver
