Katie Holmes Dishes on Her 'Classics With a Twist' Clothing Line

06/23/2010 at 02:00 PM ET

Carter Smith

It’s not just Katie Holmes‘s jeans that get fashionistas talking. The star has been slowly unveiling designs from her two-year-old Holmes & Yang line, co-designed by her stylist and friend Jeanne Yang, by wearing them to great acclaim on the red carpet. The two first had the idea for the label while going through Katie’s own closet four years ago as they both agreed that women, like men, needed wardrobe staple-based uniforms for everyday wear. “We want to create pieces a woman can wear over and over, and people won’t necessarily say, ‘Oh, you wore that last week,'” Holmes says. The two have since based their collection on what Yang–whose clients include Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Eva Mendes–calls “classics with a twist,” which includes basics like blouses, trousers, jumpsuits, skirts, and cocktail dresses that retail on the much higher end ($945 for a blouse, for example). And lest one of Hollywood’s favorite rising fashion stars, Katie’s 4-year-old daughter Suri, be left out, Holmes & Yang is turning out a few matching styles for the pint-size set. “They love matching Mom,” Holmes says of her daughter and other sartorially minded girls. “And it’s a limited time during which they really want to.” To hear more from Katie and Jeanne, check out ELLE.com or pick up their current issue, on newsstands now. –Melissa Liebling-Goldberg

From the looks of that picture I am not impressed with her clothes/designs

Patty on

This has got to be one of the worse collections I have seen in a very long time! And to ask a potential customer to pay $945 for a blouse is obscene!

dee on

So basically pieces that you can find anywhere else for a lot less!

Amethyst on

Ummmmm Patty…it didnt say her line was chatginf 945.00…read it again for clarity…It was COMPARING her line to more expensive lines that cost that much…GEEEZ People get upset over the most GOOFY-est things…..

Susan on

Those prices are insulting. Are they kidding? The one woman in the photo is wearing $2000…..a pair of pants and a blouse!! I’ve seen much more established designers charge less than that. I’m going to Target and buy some Isaac Mizrahi, thank you very much.

Susan on

Actually, if you click on the link to Elle.com it does mention the prices. And they ARE that expensive.

dee on

ummmm amethyst….click on the link to elle.com!

D Duning on

The confusion is coming from the fact that the article was not written clearly….

Recca on

The only difference between these styles and that of Express, Limited, J. Crew or Ann Taylor, is the price tag. Based on picture above, there is nothing new or different and certainly not, “classic with a twist”. Then again, this is H’wood and they beat to their own drummer.

Sue Blair on

Yawn… Like everything else Katie Holmes does, this is over-hyped and under-whelming.

Nancy N on

We’re so exclusive….yaaaawwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnn.

Elle on

BORING clothing! And I’m sorry, but KATIE HOLMES, you will never be a fashion icon, hon.

FLH on

Katie, Katie…repeat after me… you are NOT Posh. You will never be Posh. Posh actually has enough creativity to create her own line without just adding her name to someone else’s ideas. Posh is Posh. You are not Posh. Your clothing is very boring and over priced. Multiple celebrities have worn and been photographed wearing Beckham’s pieces. Aside from you, and your spoiled daughter, no one will be wearing your line. You are not Posh!

Lucy on

Why would this appeal to anyone? Katie has done nothing in her life to suggest that she can design clothes. Indeed, she is very often poorly dressed, with clothes that neither fit well not flatter. Even a famous and talented actress could not sell me on a line of clothes – Katie is clearly neither.

ChefDulce on

I love Katie as a person and mom and feel connected to her style from the last couple of years…not when she was trying to emulate Victoria Beckman. I would buy this line if it is about quality and value. If I can avoid the Mall and look good in a piece that will last a few years that is great. Some people here are misunderstanding they are comparing to blouses that cost 995 not that that is what they will charge.

Heather on

Amethyst…yes her clothes retail on the higher end. The retail price for one of her blouses it 945.00 You should click on the link to Elle.com

The prices are affordable for those who have an annual income of $10 million a year not for me who makes $56,000 a year. I’d rather take $945.00 and another $150.00 and buy a new stainless steel french door refrigerator than buy one of these blouses that I can go and buy at my local GAP.

The clothes are nice but not worth that price just because a celebrity and her designer friend.

CJ on

She must be following after Victoria Beckham…but it is a recession! I plan to see what she has and replicate it via a more affordable route. I wish her well, but it would have been better to consider the masses who are not rich but are loyal fans…

Sandra on

Just one of her blouses is $900+. Her outfits cost thousands of dollars!! The Elle.com link tells you the prices of the outfits. I’ll just stick to Joe Fresh ha ha!

Helen on

Anyone who can afford $945 for a blouse does not want staples that they can wear over and over again. They want new fashions every time! And the people who want fashions staples can’t afford $945 for one blouse.

AlexaLauren on

*yawn* boring boring boring. Mizrahi @ Target rules! Poor Katie!

fee on

You kind find better clothing for a lot less. The look is very plain. Not impressive.

jon on

ATTENTION K-MART SHOPPERS……… blue light special on the katie holmes collection on isle 5

tee on

If i could afford and 900$ blouse, i’d definitely get it! And honestly….i think its a positive thing for Katie to have something of her own. So ladies….less negativity would be nice…dont hate on the fact you cant afford her line…

Julie on

Way too lavish.. sometimes I wonder if celebrities even have a sense of reality anymore.. Anyone that spends that kind of money in these times must already be rich and have no common sense at all..

Elle on

Over $900 for one blouse? When Katie Holmes has regularly been photographed in pieces from J. Crew? It just seems greedy and ridiculous. The look of the style is great, but at those prices, the only people she’ll be dressing are her own friends. The rest of us, who like “classic with a twist” will stick with J. Crew, Banana Republic, Vince and other lines.

jj on

If it is advertised in ELLE the clothes are expensive and from the looks of them they are not worth the price.

scoobydoo3665 on

ridiculous prices for plain basic clothing.Katie is crazy to think anyone would that much for a blouse or pants..there are people out there who are just trying to get by and to suggest $1,000 on an outfit is morally wrong.

Summer819 on

Great for our hometown girl to be doing so well for herself, but shame on her for the retail cost! Exactly why I don’t bother buying fashion magazines. The average person cannot afford something like that. Even some who do manage to purchase items like this are so in debt with credit cards simply because they have to have “designer” items. It’s a shame.

Patricia on

Patty misread the article. It WAS written correctly. I had no trouble understanding that the clothing is expensive!

Sheila on

Why is it that so called designers think either black or tan is the most amazing color?? They both are dull, dull, dull and everything made with those two colors all look the exact same, there is no new twist that can be used with black and tan or even white.
Lack of imagination and style is what ‘s thrown into basic black and tans

canada girl on

Of course she is only catering to people with money who can afford $945 for an item of clothing

Katie on

A. Those clothes look like the basic department store staples.

B. I’m sorry, but what woman is going to pay $945 for some “everyday wear” item? Short of being a movie star, that is, in which case I don’t see how you would have problems wearing the same thing twice.

C. Every other celebrity seems to think they should have a clothing line, which in the end rarely does well. It’s just another way to satisfy their narcism.

Katy on

Doesn’t anyone proofread anymore?

Jon on

Very interesting to hear!

Valerie on

I’m not quite sure why they’d bother to announce this.. no one outside of Hollywood could afford that stuff.

jenn on

dont these stars have enough money…the only people that will be paying this much for her clothes will be her fellow rich friends and other celebrities…nice try mrs. cruise!!! good luck with your out of reach clothing line!!! stick to acting!!

Mandy on

borrrrrring. These clothes are very “cult”ish. LOL!

Patti H on

The clothing line should be called Cruise and Yang as like everything else im sure its ‘Big Tom’s’ idead in the first place.I like Katie and am glad shes putting her name to something, but maybe (affordable) childrens wear would be more her thing. As for the spoilt daughter comment?A bit hars! There is nothing wrong with spoiling you kids and I wouldnt slate her for that

CatR on

The clothes are nice to look at but we are all sick and tired of clothes that are not affordable. I wish Kathy Ireland had stayed at K Mart. Her clothes fit and looked really well. The designers would do very well if they did not think so highly of themselves and thought more of the women out there raising families and working 2 jobs just to keep food on the tables for their families. We want to look good because we work hard and deserve to look as good as we are.

bap on

Katie looks good in everything, most slim women do.
Its more the body than the clothes. If you have a ggood eye and a decent figure you can shop anywhere.

Jeannette on

I’m confused. Is the price suggestion a typo like, opps… for “exapmle”? The clothing looks like something I would tend to buy. However, it seems that stars turn designers have price points that are not over the top, or the other extreme, something sold a Walmart. I would love to find something that the star/designer would actually consider to wear, found in a higher end store, with a midline price. I know, wishful thinking.

Chloe on

$945 for a blouse??? WTF are they thinking? The clothes are not even that great of designs to be $100 a blouse.

Jen on

When you have more money than brains $945 for a blouse is cheap ! I find it pathetic that these people think that just because they are “designers” they can charge an arm and a leg for clothing that is nothing special – I can find similar styles (they are very basic) elsewhere for $20 !!! YOU ARE PAYING FOR THE NAME – free advertising for the designer all the way ! No thanks – not me !!!

during these tough economic times it’s ridiculous that a celebrity puts out a clothing line that only the well-to-do can afford! She would get much more support if she put out something that non-celebrities could afford – not to mention it doesn’t even look worth the price!

bh on

This is what happens when a person has to much time on their hands and doesn’t get out much!

QOMOW on

For $945 it better lift, suck and tuck everything into place and make me look amazing and I doubt that will ever happen so she an keep her OVERPRICED clothing line!!!!!!

kaydee on

Boring. Just because you wear expensive clothes doesn’t mean you can design them! Why does she get to be so lucky as to just get her own line? Regular, and far more talented people, study the art of fashion design and then work their way up to this. Americans are so celebrity driven. Some would eat dog doodoo if a celebrity sold it!
Pitiful. And the rich just get richer! Disgusting!

‘Wearing them to great acclaim’? What acclaim? The very first thing she wore people liked (navy top and skirt), but since that every time she’s worn one of her own designs she’s ended up on worst dressed lists. If Katie Holmes doesn’t even look good in her clothes, what chance do the rest of us have? And that is way too much to pay for basics from who is essentially an amateur designer.

That’s not for me of course. They don’t seem to have anything I wouldn’t find at Kohls for much less.
From what I read about Suri I think they treat her like a grown up already, I bet she’s very spoiled. Or may be they talk about her a lot to throw the stench off their suspicious marriage.

I work with Kevin, who is a great guy, and am so happy for him I’ve met Katie once and they are a great couple. These pitucres not only capture their feelings for each other but are beautiful and creative pitucres. I can’t wait to show them to my 17 year old daughter who is planning on being a creative writing/photography major in college starting next fall.
