Jennifer Love Hewitt: ‘It’s Not A Breakup Haircut!’

Astrid Stawiarz/Getty

Responding to the buzz that ensued when she stepped out in a noticeably shorter ‘do last week, the newly-single Jennifer Love Hewitt told PEOPLE, “I know everybody thinks it’s a breakup haircut—but it’s not.” Dressed in a sexy, sparkling dress by 3.1 Phillip Lim at last night’s grand opening of Esprit’s new Manhattan flagship, the actress showed off the cropped, curly hairstyle that made its debut on the heels of her split from former boyfriend and Ghost Whisperer co-star Jamie Kennedy. Love Hewitt acknowledged that the shearing took place directly after the breakup, “But it’s not about that,” she insisted, laughing. “It’s just a ‘I-need-a-change’ haircut!” But that’s not to say the actress wasn’t at least partly amused by the virtual peanut gallery: “My favorite headline so far was ‘She Cut That Man Right Out of Her Hair.’ But no–it was really just for me.”– reporting by Jeffrey Slonim

American Idol Stylist “Taking Steps, Not Leaps” With Current Contestants’ Styles

Credit: MICHAEL BECKER/FOX

Other than breakout musical talent and Simon Cowell’s acid-tongued comments, if there’s one thing American Idol is known for, it’s the dramatic makeovers that have created fashion icons out of the likes of Carrie Underwood and Adam Lambert. But don’t expect the transformations from aspiring small-town singers to glammed-up international sensations to happen overnight, says Soyon An, stylist for the series’ current ninth season. “We’re taking steps, not leaps,” she tells PEOPLE.  To get more details on how An keeps country girl Didi Benami’s look fresh, her vision for young, wide-eyed Katie Stevens, and how she’s even training one contestant to walk in heels, go to TV Watch. Tell us: Which current contestant’s style is your favorite?

Whitney Port Sued over Design Line

Frazer Harrison/Getty

While Whitney Port‘s design career is taking off in stores, on the runway and on-screen, she may have hit her first major hiccup — a lawsuit filed by designer Adrienne Baravetto, who claims she helped Port design and launch her line (then called Eve & A) starting in 2007. As first reported by TMZ.com, Baravetto alleges she had an oral agreement with Port and her father, including a $80,000 yearly salary plus a 25 percent stake in the company. Baravetto also alleges that she did virtually all the design work and that the Ports haven’t paid her a dime. Port’s lawyer Michael A. Taitelman tells PEOPLE, “The lawsuit that Adrienne Baravetto filed on March 19, 2010 against Whitney Eve, Inc., Whitney Port and others regarding the Whitney Eve clothing line is baseless and without merit. Whitney Port is, and always has been, the designer of Whitney Eve. Baravetto worked for Whitney Eve for a short period of time ending in early 2008. For more than two years, she has been silent. For reasons that we will uncover, she has decided to make these unsubstantiated allegations at this time. The defendants will vigorously defend themselves, and upon the successful conclusion of this lawsuit in their favor, they intend to hold Baravetto and her counsel accountable for their reckless conduct.” Says Baravetto’s attorney Peter Maretz, “Ms. Baravetto did the heavy lifting for these designs and she just wants to get paid fairly.”

Would You Take Makeup Tips from Courtney Love?

Roger Kisby/Getty

Who better to dispense makeup advice than someone who’s gone from grunge to glam and back again? So goes the presumed logic behind Courtney Love’s role as a newly-minted online beauty expert. The always-entertaining star, who recently treated her Twitter followers to a five-part series of homemade makeup how-tos via TwitVid, shot an online beauty tutorial for Nylon, in which she preps for a night out with her pal Michael Stipe of R.E.M. Just as riveting for Love’s free-associating (and expletive-laced) commentary as it is for actually useful advice on how to apply eyeliner, the lively segment follows the singer’s transformation from bare-faced to dramatically done up with dramatic false lashes, lavender eyeshadow, diamond dust, rhinestones — the works! — a look inspired by everything from Gretchen Ryan paintings to Ziegfield girls. While you may not wind up cribbing many of her beauty tips on your next girls-night-out, Love, who performed with Hole at SXSW in Austin this past weekend, is definitely worth watching for her sheer unedited (and we mean unedited!) self. See more from Courtney at nylonmag.com. Tell us: Would you take makeup tips from Courtney Love?

Natasha Bedingfield on Being Blonde and Discovering New Talent

Theo Wargo/WireImage

Singer Natasha Bedingfield might be one of pop’s more adventurous stars, rocking everything from ’80s-inspired dos to a shaved-side coif–but when it comes to her signature blonde color, she likes to stick with what she knows. “I’ve gone a little darker before but have not gone brunette. I’ve never actually gone away from blonde hair,” the 27-year-old told PEOPLE before a free concert Thursday at N.Y.C.’s Highline Ballroom celebrating of her partnership with John Frieda hair care and kicking off the Sheer Blonde Entourage series of events. And while she won’t count out a color change at some time in the future, for now she’s content to admire darker tones on others: “It’s funny, everyone has hair envy, don’t they?” she laughs. Don’t forget about career envy too! For those who are dying to hit the stage with the successful singer, she is giving them the chance of a lifetime to join her and perform one of her hits — you can enter by visiting forblondesonly.com and uploading audition videos to YouTube. So just what kind of singer does Natasha hope to discover? “Someone who really embodies what the song’s about and can translate it in their own way.” Being aesthetically adventurous doesn’t hurt either: “If they’re not blonde already [I'd love someone who] wouldn’t mind going blonde. They would actually get a chance to have a makeover if they wanted, so they would have to embody the spirit of what being blonde is all about.”–Katherine Kluznik Rentmeester
