Katy Perry: ‘I Really Feel Like I’m More of a Taylor Swift’

Courtesy Nylon magazine

Though pop star Katy Perry may look cutesy in a flirty neon pink jacket and ruffled gray jean skirt on the cover of this month’s NYLON magazine, the 25-year-old wants to make it clear her look is maturing: “Some of the kid s— I’ve grown out of completely…I’m taking it out on the Shirley Temple, Betty Boop, Lichtenstein kind of thing,” she says of her current style. “It’s still fun, but a bit darker. It’s not as annoying. Sometimes, I feel like a big strawberry with a face on it.” Other than editing her closet, the star says her music is also evolving, thanks to her recent break-through with the opposite sex. “Sometimes I really feel like I’m more of a Taylor Swift,” she admits. “Love has really affected my songwriting. I know how to handle a man now.” Of course, the man she speaks of is none other than British comedian Russell Brand, who’s now her fiance. As for the singer’s engagement ring, it’s pretty extravagant, and according to Perry, unique. “I’m glad [Russell Brand] didn’t go for the every-other-b—-in-Beverly-Hills-is-wearing-it-as-well ring,” she says. Demi Moore Picks Her Premiere Look Right Off the Runway

J. Graylock/JPI

One of the perks of being an A-list celebrity like Demi Moore is getting first dibs on any fashion show look as it comes off the runway. At Donna Karan’s show in New York City on Monday, we caught up with the star backstage, who gushed, “I love it!” and said that the clothes were “full of elegance, wit, lovely feminine details—[and] still with the signature luxury and the texture of the fabrics.” Pondering which of the looks she’d most love to wear, Moore dismissed a striking white ruffled blouse because, “I’m not tall enough. Brooke [Shields] could wear that!” referring to her front row companion at the show. Last night, at the Cinema Society screening of Happy Tears, sponsored by Donna Karan, Moore debuted her pick: a beautifully shaped coat, patent leather necklaces, fitted blouse, skirt, and heeled boots that had been one of the openers of Karan’s show. At the event, Moore told PEOPLE, “I knew right away. I needed to go back and check to be 100 percent sure, but I was pretty confident that this was [it].” Explaining her choice, the actress said, “What I loved was that it was very simple. It will probably need to make a run through some editorial, and hopefully it will make its way back to me.“ And what does the designer think of Moore’s selection? “One thing about Demi. I’d have her design the collection, she’s so good,” Karan says. “Demi is sharp. She knew exactly what she wanted. She put it on, and she fit into it. Last night, she says, ‘That’s what I want.’ But I said, ‘I’ve got to make it shorter,’ and she said, ‘No.’ I can’t believe it it fits so perfectly. That’s what I call flexible clothing.” –reporting by Jeffrey Slonim

FIRST LOOK: Britney Spears Goes “Through the Lens” For New Candie’s Ads

Courtesy Candie’s

To top the success of Britney Spears’ run as the face of juniors’ apparel line Candie’s Only at Kohl’s last year, the fashion brand has lined up not one, but three, of the best known photographers on the planet to shoot her newest campaign. The new series of ads, shot by Annie Leibovitz, Mark Seliger and Terry Richardson at Paramount Studios in Hollywood late last year, pay homage to the 28-year-old star’s versatility by showing her “through the lens” of the famous photographers. Through a release, Spears weighed in on the experience: “Annie, Mark and Terry are three of the biggest photographers in the world, I am honored to be working with them for my Candie’s Only at Kohl’s ads. It was an amazing shoot and I know my fans are going to love the cool images.” Each photographer brought out very different sides of the performer, with Leibovitz opting for an industrial backdrop, and Richardson working on a plain white set, while Seliger created two elaborate scenarios: one involving a custom-made pink Harley-Davidson motorcycle on lush green grass, and the other inspired by a French burlesque performer’s dressing room. The latter, shown at top left here, features Spears lounging on a chaise in full pin-up girl mode, surrounded by feather boas, bouquets of flowers, and fanciful, all-pink decor. Look out for the full range of images to appear in fashion magazines and billboards shortly, as well as at candies.com and kohls.com. – Emily Hsieh

Kim Kardashian Debuts Her ‘Strong’ and ‘Sexy’ Fragrance

Fame

In a black one-shoulder dress from the bebe collection she designed with her sisters, Kim Kardashian posed for pictures with a slew fans (a line wrapped the block from the midtown Manhattan Sephora) at the launch of her signature perfume last night. “I’m so happy with it,” Kim told PEOPLE of her debut scent. “It’s strong, it’s voluptuous, it’s sexy and you can wear it day time to night time.” As for the inspiration behind the scent, Kardashian turned to family memories. “I wanted something flowery but not fruity smelling, not too candy-ish. I knew all the smells that I loved were gardenias, because they reminded me of family vacations in Hawaii, and tuberose always reminded me of mom for some reason.” And while she’s only recently gone pro with her love of scents, experimenting with them started at a young age for her. “Kourtney and I thought that making perfume was taking flowers and putting it in a blender. [As kids] we tried that and that’s obviously not how perfume is made,” she laughs. These days Kim knows better, but that doesn’t stop her from wanting family and friends to weigh in on the scent — even recruiting boyfriend Reggie Bush to lend his nose. “I would actually spray it on my arm and go, ‘Ok, babe, this hand or this hand: which one do you like?’ And then I’d get the scent that he liked and thank god it was the same scent that I liked!” As for what she likes on her beau: “I kind of like it when he has his lotion, his bodywash, his deodorant — his own manly scent.” Buy Kim’s scent, starting at $16 for a portable roll-on at sephora.com. –Shruti Dhalwala and Katherine Kluznik Rentmeester

VOTE: Which is Lady Gaga’s Most Outrageous Mask?

Frank Micelotta/PictureGroup; Peter Kramer/AP; Richard Young/Startraks

The ever-shocking Lady Gaga may have left most of us in awe when she sported a white three-tiered gown topped with a towering cotton candy wig at the Brit Awards tonight, but we weren’t too surprised by her choice of a face mask. After all, the lacy veil look has become one of the fearless chanteuse’s signatures. The always avant-garde Gaga first raised eyebrows from this visage-obscuring style when she debuted a blood-red lace Alexander McQueen archive dress with a matching headdress and veil at the MTV Video Music Awards. Then, at the 13th Annual ACE awards in November, the Mother of Monsters showed off a similar veil lace headpiece–this time in black to match her Marc Jacobs outfit — when she appropriately accepted the Accessory Council’s Stylemaker award. And now at the Brit Awards, she’s at it again, sporting a Phillip Treacy mask. With so many face-shielding outfits, we want to know which of Lady Gaga’s veiled looks you liked best–vote for them below!

Zoe Saldana on Dressing Like A ‘Sci-Fi Geek’ and Taking Fashion on the Web

Demis Maryannakis/Splash News Online

In addition to being one of Hollywood’s fastest rising stars, Zoe Saldana is quickly becoming one of fashion’s It-girls. At a launch party for MyFDB.com, an online fashion industry database founded by Saldana and her real-life beau, Keith Britton, the 31-year-old chatted with PEOPLE about her own style evolution.“[In high school] I was a little bit of everything,” she says. “Sometimes I would want to dress like a cheerleader or like a mean girl or the Sci-Fi geek that I usually was. It all depended on my mood, but I always knew that I loved fashion.” But no matter what she decided to wear, she always tried to take her own fashion-forward mother’s suggestions, she tells PEOPLE. “My mom is from the Caribbean so her advice has always been incorporate color in your wardrobe,” she says. “I always end up dressing in black and white–the New York state of mind. But I really do try to listen to my mom’s advice.” And other than her mother, who else inspires her style? “I just went to the Prabal Gurung show and I was absolutely smitten by all their clothes,” she says of the rising designer. “I was absolutely thrown back by his beautiful collection. There was definitely this black dress that he had with a leather belt and I went crazy for it. I was like, ‘I must have that!’” To check out Saldana’s new website, go to MyFDB.com.–David Yi, with reporting by Paul Chi

Sandra Bullock’s ‘Oddly Relaxed’ Sprint To Find An Oscar Dress

Kyle Rover/Startraks

With less than three weeks to go until the Oscars, the ever-laid back Sandra Bullock admits she still isn’t sure what she’s going to wear—not that she’s stressed about it. “I’m so behind,” she acknowledged at yesterday’s lunch to honor the nominees at the Beverly Hills Hilton. “Today was the first time that I actually saw one dress and then looked at some sketches.” The circumspect star—who commented that her sleek gray skirt suit by Vivienne Westwood made her feel “like a very cleaned-up version of myself compared to what I look like when I got up this morning,”—says, “I’m pretty good about finding something and sort of circling around it and then I’m oddly relaxed about it because it’s someone else’s job to finely stitch thousands of pleats and jewels into a gorgeous thing to make you look divine.” When it comes down to it, Bullock is determined to make the best with whatever comes her way: “Look, if I have to wear a trash bag I’ll belt it with rhinestones and I’ll make it work, but I’m not panicking for some reason because there are so many beautiful things out [there] that someone will not want to wear and I’ll get it. But there’s one I saw that’s just a work of art.” We cannot wait to see what she picks! –reporting by Scott Huver
