Carey Mulligan on Fashion Advice from Anna and Competing Against Meryl

Dave Hogan/Getty

Having already appeared once in Vogue, is Best Actress nominee Carey Mulligan taking editor-in-chief Anna Wintour’s advice on what to wear to the Oscars? Not according to Mulligan, who has visions of her own. “Anna said I should wear short for the Oscars,” says Mulligan. “I was like ‘No, that is so not what I had in my head when I was six years old!’” Despite turning down Anna’s fashion tip, the 24-year-old is hardly ready to attend the Academy Awards on March 7. “It’s beyond wild,” adds Mulligan, who has been nominated for her role in An Education. “I haven’t got a dress or speech planned. I haven’t got any of that stuff yet!” And while nominations may have come out several weeks ago, Mulligan admits that it really only sank in at the recent nominees luncheon. “You’re made to stand on this bank with all the other nominees like graduation, and are called up one by one to get your certificate. You just go ‘wow. I’ve actually got some written proof that this has happened!’” So does she think she can win? “It is beyond crazy to be up against Meryl Streep,” the actress adds. “She is the best actor on the planet. So it is really hard not to be overawed. Meryl Streep is the queen!” But Carey does have fans on her side, including director Quentin Tarantino, who says, “She is fantastic. I haven’t done my voting yet and I haven’t decided between her and Gabby [Gabourey Sidibe]. It is actually one of the tougher ones and I don’t think I’ll be able to choose until I’m there ready to write it.” –Phil Boucher

David Fisher/Rex USA; Jon Furniss/WireImage

When Robert Pattinson hit the red carpet at the BAFTA Awards last night in a custom made Gucci tuxedo, gone were his famously sexy tousled locks. Instead, his usually unruly head of hair was smoothed out into a more award show-ready look. It could have been due to the London rain, but what if Rob is planning to give up his famous bed head for a more tamed look? We’re sure we will grow to love it just as much, but still…we may always love the messy look best. Tell us: What do you think of Rob’s tamed locks? Do you love it or hate it? Vote!

Pete Wentz on Couple Style: I’m A ‘Walking Purse’

Jesse Grant/WireImage

Pete Wentz may have his own successful clothing line, Clandestine Industries, but he lets his fashionable wife Ashlee Simpson-Wentz take the lead in their couple style. “If I go out with her, I consider myself a walking purse,” he tells ELLE.com. “So I just try to match her outfit. But she’ll tell me when I look too stupid.” And in the same way his wife accepted his own former use of heavy guyliner, the rocker says that he, too, would support his son Bronx if he were to ever follow suit. “Whatever he does, I’ll support him,” he says. “I’m sure he’ll be into math or football or something I don’t know anything about and I’ll have to learn a lot about it.” And what new trend is the rocker now following? “The Jersey Shore kids,” he admits. “The show’s so organic, like, the first time humans have made contact with this species, and it’s amazing.” So could this mean that the rocker may be trading in his signature emo look for some DJ Pauly D hair spray? Very possibly. “When he [Pauly D] went underwater, and his hair stayed the same exact way, that was mind-blowing!” he exclaims. “And I love GTL [Gym, Tan, Laundry] — I almost want to start the practice.” Now, that’s something we’d have to see to believe. Shaun White’s Hair Secrets Revealed!

Roger L. Wollenberg/Landov

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White, 23, has wowed snowboarding fans—and millions who didn’t know they were snowboarding fans—with his daredevil double corks and other wild moves. But just as entrancing is White’s lush mane of natural red hair. How does he get it just that fabulous? “My secret is an awesome new product – called water,” White deadpans. “It’s pretty curly on its own. I just use the hotel shampoo and conditioner and wash it every other day, because otherwise it gets huge. Two days of snowboarding in a helmet helps — it looks better dirtier.” Right now, a friend trims his hair for free every two months. But the stylist does more thinning than shortening. “I feel I’ve lost something if I cut it short; but I need to take the weight off.” Though he has tried to brush off the nickname “Flying Tomato,” he has no plans to change his signature color. “If I did, I’d go black to make it Danzig-looking,” he says with a laugh, referring to the punk band. “Black hair looks OK with freckles.” –Lorenzo Benet

The Scoop on Beyonce and Rihanna’s Wild New Costumes

Felipe Dana/AP

We were instantly intrigued when photos emerged of Beyoncé in Rio de Janeiro last week wearing a saucy, elaborately patterned jumper and headpiece on the set of her music video for “Put It In A Love Song,” her duet with Alicia Keys. Turns out the eye-catching garments were made by 26-year-old New Jersey-based designer Maya A. Lake of the label Boxing Kitten (which also counts Fergie, Solange, and Erykah Badu as fans), who is also responsible for the black and white halter top Rihanna wore in her recent “Rude Boy” video. Melina Matsoukas, who directed the Keys and Beyoncé video, called upon the designer for fun, sexy, bright clothes to match the shoot’s carnival theme. Keys and Beyoncé both wore Lake’s “Billie” jumper, named after legendary songstress Billie Holiday, while Keys also donned a custom made black and white dress, as well as the “Althea” skirt, which “comes longer in the collection and I shortened it because I thought it would be cuter for the video,” Lake tells PEOPLE. As for Rihanna’s graphic “Rude Boy” look, the designer confirms, “Rihanna is wearing a black and white bustier that’s completely custom.” For more information about Boxing Kitten, and to shop the current collection, visit boxingkitten.com. – Jessica Herndon
