Anne Hathaway On Her “Weird Features” and Surprising Style Icons

Anne Hathaway looks as unequivocally gorgeous and radiant as ever on the March cover of InStyle—though she’s probably the only person out there who doesn’t see it: “I think I’ve got really weird features. I have very large features on a very small head,” she tells the magazine. “But, you know, I’m not going to beat myself up. It’s my face. I’m not very pretty. But that’s OK because I do know that I look like myself, and I think at the end of the day, as nice as pretty is, authenticity is more important.” The self-effacing actress continues: “If I don’t work out at all, I have too much curve and no tone—which is not OK. It’s about finding balance.” Hathaway strives for equilibrium in the way she dresses too, with her tomboy-by-day, glamazon-by-night approach: “In the evening it would never occur to me to go out in motorcycle boots like this,” she says, referring to the black Burberry pair she wore to her interview. “I love going out in high heels and dressing up and glamming it up, and having there be a distinction between what happened throughout the day and the evening.” As to where she finds style inspiration, the 27 year-old, who calls out Marc Jacobs as one of her “all-time favorite designers,” has a long list of Hollywood peers who demonstrate “innovation and originality,” including Tilda Swinton, Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, Selma Blair, and Natalie Portman, and says: “I like people who are true to themselves.” The March issue of InStyle hits stands this Friday, and for more on Anne in the meantime, visit instyle.com. – Emily Hsieh

It’s highly irritating when actresses and supermodels say things like this — clearly, she’s attractive. Maybe not everyone will find her attractive, but generally speaking, she is attractive. Hollywood is not going to put someone who’s “not pretty” and with “weird features” in a lead role in a film. I just find these comments disingenous.

Is she serious?I love this girl. She’s very beautiful!! What a shame she doesn’t see it.

I am going to be honest here…she is pretty. She has big brown eyes, a huge smile..of course she is lovely. What she lacks…and I think that is why her roles have been limited…is sex appeal. She looks truly innocent and I think she isn’t convincing playing certain sexier, more experienced characters.

[...] Hathaway laments how unfortunate-looking she is in the March issue of InStyle. Poor Anne –  standing in the “modesty” line when she should have doubled-up on [...]

Seriously? Are we really going to discuss this? Anne Hathaway has a beautiful complexion. She’s very much like an English rose with her porcelain skin. Though her features are not considered “conventional”, I think she has a very unique look. People don’t need blonde hair, blue eyes and a button nose to be gorgeous.

Interesting that she is self aware. There are many in Hollywood who are far less attractive and consider themselves more beautiful. Only in Hollywood, she is not pretty, but take a trip to midwest America, where not being obese is a rarity, and you will see that beauty is a relative thing.
