Anne Hathaway On Her “Weird Features” and Surprising Style Icons

Anne Hathaway looks as unequivocally gorgeous and radiant as ever on the March cover of InStyle—though she’s probably the only person out there who doesn’t see it: “I think I’ve got really weird features. I have very large features on a very small head,” she tells the magazine. “But, you know, I’m not going to beat myself up. It’s my face. I’m not very pretty. But that’s OK because I do know that I look like myself, and I think at the end of the day, as nice as pretty is, authenticity is more important.” The self-effacing actress continues: “If I don’t work out at all, I have too much curve and no tone—which is not OK. It’s about finding balance.” Hathaway strives for equilibrium in the way she dresses too, with her tomboy-by-day, glamazon-by-night approach: “In the evening it would never occur to me to go out in motorcycle boots like this,” she says, referring to the black Burberry pair she wore to her interview. “I love going out in high heels and dressing up and glamming it up, and having there be a distinction between what happened throughout the day and the evening.” As to where she finds style inspiration, the 27 year-old, who calls out Marc Jacobs as one of her “all-time favorite designers,” has a long list of Hollywood peers who demonstrate “innovation and originality,” including Tilda Swinton, Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, Selma Blair, and Natalie Portman, and says: “I like people who are true to themselves.” The March issue of InStyle hits stands this Friday, and for more on Anne in the meantime, visit instyle.com. – Emily Hsieh

I’ve never found her “beautiful” either, but she has a very unique look that stands out among the typical Hollywood types. It’s actually refreshing to see someone that looks different in movies.

Wow. Nuff said.

She’s talented compared to some other actresses and she has unique features that make her who she is – she is not the usual petite blonde girl but there is nothing wrong with that. To be an actress you do not have to be beautiful.

Ann, how can she say you are not pretty, you are gorgeous! The cover of InStyle is wonderful and the color suits you. Lets face it, you have it all my dear!

I think Anne is beautiful in her own unique way…though I am not loving that cover photo.

Not pretty, but interesting looking. And can look attractive. She needs “hair” to sort of soften her face.

She always comes off as nice and kind. Really that’s better than being born with ideal features.

I find it really unattractive that she would say such a thing publicly. Even if she privately struggles with insecurities, she doesn’t need to rip herself apart. Lots of women struggle with physical issues that are much greater than “I think my mouth is too big for my head.” Anne Hathaway is a beautiful and successful young actress. But what would be truly refreshing would be to hear someone like her say, “I have insecurities like anyone, but overall I think I look great. And anyway, when it comes to having a happy life, good looks aren’t as important as a good personality.”
