Katharine McPhee Reveals Her ‘Rebellious’ Move

Courtesy Shape

When Katharine McPhee first sat in stylist Peter Savic’s chair last year, the American Idol alum admittedly wanted something drastic, but wasn’t sure what. “I was feeling rebellious. That’s when I knew I wanted something big,” she tells Shape in their February issue. “So I said to my stylist, ‘Just chop it all off and make me a blonde!’” Katharine’s rash decision may have turned out to be more work for her in the end, but it helped the star bring out a new side of herself. “I felt edgy and playful. I went out and bought new clothes for the new me. It was definitely a good thing to do,” she says about her first day as a blonde. And her hair wasn’t the only thing changing in her life. Katharine, who had struggled with bulimia for seven years, was finally starting to feel good about her body too. “I stopped fighting myself and became more forgiving of my body,” she says. “Ironically, the weight came off naturally through exercise but no dieting.” In fact, Katharine felt so good about her new self that she had no problem stripping down to her bikini for Shape. Hear more on how she got her confidence back, and try out Katharine’s new high-intensity fitness routine, in the February issue,on newsstands today, January 18, or visit Shape.com.–Andrea DeSimone

‘The Office’ Star Angela Kinsey’s Low-Key Glam Routine for the Globes

Clairol

Her television show might have been nominated for a Golden Globe Award, but Angela Kinsey didn’t need the help of a posh salon or team of stylists to help her primp. In fact, the Clairol spokesperson got glam for the red carpet in the comfort of her own home. Skipping the expensive highlight job, Angela tells PEOPLE.com, “I colored my hair with Nice ‘n Easy [in] Natural Medium Neutral Blonde. Because the Golden Globes are a big fancy party, I actually had a friend help me.” And unlike other starlets, Angela Kinsey didn’t hit the gym or change up her diet to prep for the red carpet. “I always try to drink lots of water,” Angela says about getting her skin in shape. And to keep her body fit? “Chasing Isabel!” Angela says of running after her 20-month-old daughter. “We love to go on walks together and explore.” But, when it comes to the dress, even this laid-back actress feels the stress. “It can be a little nerve-wracking,” she says. “I usually just go with what I like and what makes me feel fancy.” And this year, that meant a slinky blue satin gown by Laundry that even withstood the rainy conditions outside!–Andrea DeSimone, reporting by Katherine Kluznik Rentmeester

Golden Globe Awards Trend Wrap-Up: Pink, Purple and Plenty of Sparkle

Jason Merritt/Getty

The Golden Globe Awards are exciting for so many reasons, but for us, none more so than setting the major trends for the upcoming red carpet season. And the trends were as clearly defined as we’ve ever seen them! Pinks and peaches ruled, from Drew Barrymore’s barely-nude Atelier Versace to Nicole Kidman’s pale Nina Ricci to Maggie Gyllenhaal’s iridescent RM by Roland Mouret to Emily Blunt’s delicate Dolce & Gabbana to Diane Kruger’s vivid Christian Lacroix. Purples made a strong showing with Sandra Bullock’s Bottega Veneta, Jennifer Garner’s Atelier Versace and Jane Krakowski’s J. Mendel. And what about gold? Anna Paquin, Jaime Pressly and Toni Collette all glittered in gilded gowns. Fergie and Courteney Cox chose beaded waistlines while Kyra Sedgwick and Rose Byrne went for pins at their waists. Black got sexy with fishtails for Penélope Cruz in Armani Privé and Vera Farmiga in Dolce & Gabbana, while Jennifer Aniston and Jodie Foster went for racy slits in their gowns. As for beauty, Cameron Diaz and January Jones both hit the key trends of the night — slicked-back hair and bold red lips. Tell us: What was your favorite look of the night? What was your favorite trend?

Emily Blunt’s Golden Globe Dress Dilemma: Safe or Brave?

Michael Tullberg/Getty

Emily Blunt may be a buttoned-up Queen Victoria on screen, but she is a true Hollywood siren when she hits the red carpet, as evidenced by her glamorous appearance at yesterday’s BAFTA/LA Awards Season Tea Party. Clad in a sexy cobalt blue Carolina Herrera sheath, Blunt dished to PEOPLE on her Golden Globe Awards plans, including with a luxurious start to her day. “I’m going to lie in and have a long lie, and I’m going to stay in bed until about twelve. I like it for people to come over early, like hair and makeup, and just start early. And lots of coffee, lots of croissants. That kind of thing.” But just because she knows how her day is going to start, doesn’t mean she knows exactly which gown she’ll be wearing. She teases, “It’s a toss-up right now. I’m going to surprise you.” As for how she decides between her two options (“a brave one and a safe one”), she explains “I think you try it on, you ask different opinions, people that you trust. It also depends if I’m interesting and brave or not that day.” One person in her life who won’t tell her what to wear is her fiancé John Krasinski, whom she says is “very good. He always lets me have my own [opinion].” We’re sure both options will look amazing! Make sure to check back on PEOPLE.com starting at 6 pm tonight for all the Golden Globe Awards coverage, including a live chat. –reporting by Scott Huver
