SAG Awards Red-Hot Trend: Sexy Scarlet Gowns!

Fashion stars like Emily Blunt, Diane Kruger and Sandra Bullock ruled last week’s Golden Globe Awards in soft pinks and purples, but for this week’s SAG Awards, Hollywood’s leading ladies went va-va-voom sexy in red-hot gowns. Carey Mulligan channeled old-Hollywood glamour in her fishtail Lanvin gown–complete with a vintage-inspired diamond broach, while Mariah Carey and Christina Hendricks smoldered in one-shoulder, curve-hugging numbers. Navy blues also heated up the red carpet from Drew Barrymore‘s tiered Monique Lhuillier to Julianna Margulies’s velvet Narciso Rodriguez. And stars like Kate Hudson and Christina Applegate (in Roberto Cavalli) made a statement from the back with reverse plunges. As for beauty, Glee‘s Lea Michele and Penélope Cruz hit a major hair trend with cascading waves. Tell us: What was your favorite look of the night?

The Inspiration Behind Penelope Cruz’s Glowy Golden Globes Look? Uma Thurman!

BEImages

Following a tropical vacation, Pené lope Cruz went for a golden faux-tan on the red carpet at last weekend’s Golden Globes, according to her hairstylist Oribe and makeup artist Scott Barnes. At the launch of his new book About Face this week in N.Y.C, Barnes explained Cruz’s inspiration for her look: “She had just come back from her vacation. And she said, ‘I want to be tan. I want this eye.’ She found it in my book, it was Irina, the sexy Russian model who does the Guess! Jeans ads.” Barnes, who held court with another of his favorite clients, Jennifer Lopez, that evening, also revealed that Cruz, “had remembered an Elle cover I did with Uma Thurman. Uma was really tan and she wanted to look really tan, because she had just come back from vacation.” Makeup artist Oribe weighed in on Cruz’s flowing locks: “I just tried to wave her hair. She wanted to wear it down for the Armani dress. It was just movie star glamour. Wavy, but not too wavy. Just stylized nicely.” And where exactly was Cruz’s vacation-tousled look recreated? “We did it at her home. Real casual and easy and we got her ready probably in an hour and a half, nails and everything done,” says Oribe. “She’s amazing, just a regular girl,” added the hair guru. “Scott brought his book, showed her what he wanted to do. She loved it. It just went very smoothly. Beautiful eye, natural skin, it was a different makeup for her… really special. It made her look really fresh.” –Jeffrey Slonim

EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: Kellie Pickler’s New Pixie Cut

Courtesy Kellie Pickler

First Kellie Pickler shocked fans by debuting new auburn hair at the CMA Awards, and then just a month later she was back to her signature blonde. Now the country star is giving PEOPLE readers a first look at an equally bold new do — a short crop! So what prompted Kellie to try a pixie cut? “My hair started falling out!” Pickler explains. “It was so damaged I looked like a scarecrow so I chopped it off!” During her recent USO trip to the Middle East, where she entertained and visited with troops in Iraq and Kuwait, her hair began falling out as a result of transitioning from blonde to red and back again. “I had two choices — look like a scarecrow or cut it,” she says. Though the style was dictated out of necessity, Pickler says that she’s pleased with her new look, which recalls one of her own country idols. “Having short hair makes me feel like I set my self apart [style wise] from the other women in country music,” she says. “I remember being in love with Lorrie Morgan’s hairstyles growing up. I’ve always thought she was beautiful and confident.” And what does her boyfriend, Nashville songwriter Kyle Jacobs, think? “Kyle could care less. He’d love me if I was bald, and vice-versa,” she says. “What he and I have is very special. Unconditional. God blessed me with a good man.” And now, also, a very good haircut! Julia Roberts on Being Lancome’s Newest Face: ‘It’s Kind of Like Every Girl’s Dream’

Jackson Lee/Splash News Online

Making her debut as Lancôme’s global ambassador at a dinner in Paris, Julia Roberts got frank about what it’s like to be the beauty brand’s newest spokesperson. “It’s kind of like every girl’s dream, really,” she tells WWD. “To be 42 and have three kids and be a working mom, it’s a great moment to be asked to do this and to be able to do it. I think it says a lot about Lancôme and what they stand for.” As for how she’s approaching her new role, the actress jokes, “I think I have to stand up straighter and wash my face more.” But Yousef Nabi, Lancôme International’s president, tells WWD that the actress took the assignment very seriously, explaining, “Julia really wants to be involved in the development of the products.” For her part, Roberts said, “I get all these things to play with and test and give my opinion about. And it’s quite exciting without having to invest all of myself in how I look because they did come to me as me, which is a pretty casual mom. But you know, it’s nice to up your game a little bit.” While Roberts is taking a down-to-earth attitude toward being the beauty industry’s newest supermodel, she’s already starring in her first campaign, for Définicils Precious Cells Mascara. Shot by photographer Mario Testino in a private Manhattan apartment, the ads will break in Europe this March before rolling out to the U.S. during the summer. Hollywood Sounds Off On Pitt and Clooney’s Controversial Facial Hair

Peter Kramer/AP; Kevin Winter/Getty

It seems like everyone has something to say about the facial hair that has taken over the faces of two of PEOPLE’s Sexiest Men Alive. Brad Pitt’s beard has been growing through the winter, while his pal George Clooney kicked off award season with the new look. Eli Roth, who appears with Pitt in Inglourious Basterds, thinks his co-star’s beard is amazing. “That’s like a professional beard,” said Roth at the Critics’ Choice Awards in Hollywood Friday night. “Only Brad can pull off a beard like that.” Meanwhile, Melanie Lynskey, who appears with Clooney in Up In The Air, says she hadn’t seen his new beard but wanted to check it out. “He’s not going to look bad,” she tells PEOPLE. “He could bleach his hair blonde and he wouldn’t look bad!” Another guy whose looks can’t be diminished by facial hair is Jon Hamm, according to Mad Men creator Matt Weiner. “He can get rid of it and grow it again in an afternoon,” Weiner joked about Hamm, who plays the dapper Don Draper. “I told him that he looks like GI Joe, which is quite a compliment. There’s nothing you can do to make that guy look bad, let me tell you.” Vote now on which leading man wears his facial hair best! – Elaine Aradillas
