‘Precious’ Star Gabourey Sidibe on Her High Fashion Makeover: ‘I Feel Like A Model’

Courtesy Harper’s Bazaar

It’s been quite a journey for Precious star Gabourey Sidibe. Her critically acclaimed performance in the drama, alongside Mariah Carey, has already garnered her SAG Award and Golden Globe nominations along with plenty of Oscar buzz. In the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar, the 26 year-old, Brooklyn-born star dishes on her larger-than-life confidence, fashion philosophy and what she won’t do to fit in designer clothes. Dressed in a slinky, red Tommy Hilfiger dress and strands of diamonds from famed jewelers Harry Winston, Kwiat and Chopard, she tells the magazine of her glam look, “I feel like a model.” And while Gabourey can pose for the camera like any seasoned pro, her confidence didn’t come as easily as it may seem. “It came late, too late in my life,” she recalls of changing her attitude. “One day I decided that I was beautiful, and so I carried out my life as if I was a beautiful girl.” And now, Gabourey goes for bold colors and glam gowns, including her favorite — the David Meister number she wore to the L.A. premiere of Precious. “It was so va va voom, my boobs looked so good in it. I had diamonds on too. Diamonds really do it.” Other than show-stopping bling, Gabourey says, “I wear colors that I really like, I wear makeup that makes me feel pretty, and it really helps.” And even though Gabourey has traded Torrid for designer labels, she promises that she won’t be slimming down any time soon to fit into sample sizes. “I hate yoga so much. Like if yoga was a person, I’d stab them,” she jokes. “It doesn’t make any sense to kill yourself, because who are you trying to be beautiful for? It’s a mind game, not a body game.” Hear more from Gabourey Sidibe in the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar, on newsstands January 12, or at harpersbazaar.com.

All the Details of Kate Gosselin’s 20-Hour Hair Makeover!

Melanie Dunea

With her divorce to Jon finally behind her, Kate Gosselin started off 2010 by spending some serious quality time with a new guy — and their date lasted until the wee hours of the morning. Celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson, who has tended to the tresses of Angelina Jolie and Anne Hathaway, spent nearly 20 hours last week meticulously adding hundreds of extensions to Kate’s hair. Luckily, they both agree that their time together was a smashing success. “Kate was an absolute sweetheart, I loved her,” says Gibson, who also appears on the TLC show What Not To Wear. While he knew that transforming the look that launched a thousand Halloween wigs would be a challenge, Gibson reveals it was the super-short, spiky hair in the back of Kate’s notorious former hairstyle that proved most daunting. “Bonding extensions to those little hairs really took time. But in all those hours, she didn’t complain once. She was so open to whatever I suggested, and willing to try just about anything.” Well, with one notable exception: At first, Gibson reports, Kate was reluctant to let go of the thick, jaw-length shock of hair in the front of her face in favor of bangs. “She wasn’t sure about bangs,” says Gibson, “But I find many women have that one thing they’re afraid to let go of, that one ‘security blanket’ part of their look, whether it’s a fear of going shorter or darker or something. But once they finally let go and embrace the change, they always love it.” Indeed, Kate gave in on the bangs and was thrilled with the sleek, layered look Gibson achieved. “It’s good to have hair again,” she says. “I know this will be more upkeep than my old look, but I’m ready for it. I’m just grateful I don’t have to go through the awkward growing-out process of short hair. I get criticized for everything I do enough as it is!” To see more of Kate’s brand-new look — and to hear more about how her kids are doing, what she thinks of the latest Jon drama, and whether she’s ready for romance — pick up the new issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.

PETA Uses an Unauthorized Image of Michelle Obama in Latest Ad

PETA/AP

From actresses like Eva Mendes to reality starlets like Khloe Kardashian, Hollywood has eagerly stripped down for PETA, but in their latest campaign, the animal rights organization failed to consult one of the most famous American faces before using her image. The latest ad, titled “Fur-Free and Fabulous!”, surfaced today picturing First Lady Michelle Obama– alongside Carrie Underwood, Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks– without the White House’s knowledge. When contacted, Semonti Stephens, a spokeswoman for the First Lady, tells PEOPLE of the ad campaign: “We did not consent.” As far as Mrs. Obama’s feelings about the PETA cause in general, Stephens says only, “Mrs. Obama does not wear fur.” PETA’s response? “The fact is that Michelle Obama has issued a statement indicating that she doesn’t wear fur, and the world should know that in PETA’s eyes, that makes her pretty fabulous,” the organization’s president Ingrid Newkirk told the press. –Andrea DeSimone

EXCLUSIVE: Jason Alexander is the New Jenny Craig Spokesperson!

Move over Valerie Bertinelli and Sara Rue — there’s a new man in town. Seinfeld star Jason Alexander has one big resolution for 2010 — to drop pounds as the newest spokesperson for Jenny Craig. “It’s like someone’s clubbing me over the head it’s so obvious I should be doing this,” the funnyman told PEOPLE on Monday. “It was a deadly combination of I’m fat and they work,” he says of his decision to try the program. The former KFC spokesperson says he was drawn to Jenny Craig after watching footage of his recent appearances in film and television. “I just got to a point where when I would look at the Seinfeld reunion stuff or one of these other projects that I had done, I said, ‘I don’t like the way that guy looks. That guy is not attractive in any way, shape or form to me,’” he says. “It made me go, ‘Oh, yuck!’” Alexander hopes to slim down between 30 and 40 pounds to reflect his weight during the early years of the show that made him a star. “Over the course of the nine years of Seinfeld, I can actually see my hairline go away and my waistline increase. One of them I can do nothing about; the other I can,” he jokes. The comedian credits his initial weight gain to sympathy-weight during his wife’s two pregnancies – he gained about 15 pounds during each — and the increased quality of craft services on the Seinfeld set — “it will absolutely kill ya!”

Alexander was also inspired by the success of pal and fellow Jenny Craig spokesperson Bertinelli, who flaunted her slimmed-down bikini-bod on the cover of PEOPLE last April — though don’t expect Alexander to do the same. “I will not be wearing a bikini for you,” he promises. The actor says he’s excited to join the mostly-female ranks of Jenny Craig spokespeople. “It’s hard for me to think of the Jenny Craig program — or any weight loss program — as a female thing,” he says. L.A. Clippers player Baron Davis has also endorsed the program. “I’m trying not only to do it for myself but I’m encouraging other guys to come on board and say we can do this. This will work for us, and we can do this and deal with the problem,” says Alexander. “If somebody goes, ‘Well, if George can do it, I can do it!’ – that’s great. Whatever it takes to get you heading in the right direction. If I’m it, great!” –Jessica Wedemeyer

Meet Victoria’s Secret 2010 SWIM Cover Girl Lindsay Ellingson

Russell James

Victoria’s Secret has a long history of turning models into supermodels — and Angels! — and their latest pick for greatness is Lindsay Ellingson, who graces the cover of their new 2010 SWIM catalogue in nothing but a daring “topless” bikini. The California girl felt at home on her shoot on the beach on gorgeous Necker Island, calling it “really an experience of a lifetime!” Lindsay explains, “It’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. We shot the cover in the evening during sunset. It was really a magical setting.” Having already walked the runway for designers such as John Galliano, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana, you might think the beauty might be jaded, but she tells PEOPLE that she is thrilled to be chosen for the cover, saying “Being chosen for the cover is one of the most exciting things that has happened in my career. Being a Victoria’s Secret model means so much to me. The greatest thing about being a VS model is that I get to be myself and show who I am.” And as for showing off her own sensational form, she tells PEOPLE that she was totally comfortable in her sexy suit, with or without the top on! “So, on the cover I’m wearing a “topless” bikini with a removable bandeau [pictured on]. We shot it both ways, with and without the bandeau. I felt great in it and my hair covered me when I shot topless so I wasn’t uncomfortable at all.” She elaborates, “I actually got so comfortable I was dancing around on the beach — of course, with the bandeau. I would wear it if I was back on Necker Island on my own private beach!” The 2010 Victoria’s Secret SWIM catalogue hits mailboxes this week. –Melissa Liebling-Goldberg
