Hayden Panettiere Explains Her Newly Red Hair: "I Don't Feel Like a Blonde Right Now!"

As one of Hollywood’s more recognizable blondes, Heroes star Hayden Panettiere gave new meaning to “red carpet reveal” when she turned up at the Temple Grandin premiere in New York this week with newly auburn hair. As much as we love the new look, such a drastic color change is always a bold move–especially in Hollywood. So our big question for her was, why red now? “Because I could, because I was done with the season,” she explained to PEOPLE. “I was like, ‘I need to change, I need to get myself out of this slot. I don’t feel like a blonde right now!’” In true superstar fashion, the actress didn’t stop with her hair, and had her stylist touch up her brows as well. “I hope they match,” she said, continuing, “Eyebrows very much frame the face.” Despite the color change, Hayden tells us that she isn’t through with the change-ups. “I was going to go dark,” she said of her original hair color plan. “And then I decided to go red first — and then dark.” We can’t wait to see what’s next! Tell us: Do you like Hayden’s new color, or do you prefer her as a blonde?–Katherine Kluznik Rentmeester, reporting by Jeffrey Slonim

Blond is best on

She is a pretty girl, but I like her blond better. Red is a hard color to make look natural on most people, red under tones, hightights, etc., sure, but a whole head of read hair? Few people have the skin color for red hair. I also think going darker would be a big mistake as well. It will look very contrived and make her look older, although kids at that age want that, so perhaps that is why she has a desire for darker hair.

I think to be an exceptional actor, one must be able to change their appearance to any extreme. When actors are on down time, this gives them opportunity to explore different personal looks. It also gives them the opportunity to find more mature roles, especially when you start out as a child actor. Hayden is a beautiful young girl who has pretty much looked the same since she was younger. She went from curly to straight, long to short, so why not try a different color. You look great, Hayden. You’re not a “cheerleader” anymore.

But do the drapes match the carpet? Or are we talking bare floors?

Gorgeous! Much better than the blonde actually.

She looks nice but red is the hardest color to get out of hair! I have known blondes and even brunettes that have had trouble! She is famous so she has an advantage!

she looks so much better blonde. I have blonde hair and would never dye it darker. My best friend who had blonde just went red. i guess that is the in thing now. she is young she can do as she wants butshe is much more like the girl next door with blonde hair.
