It’s been quite a journey for Precious star Gabourey Sidibe. Her critically acclaimed performance in the drama, alongside Mariah Carey, has already garnered her SAG Award and Golden Globe nominations along with plenty of Oscar buzz. In the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar, the 26 year-old, Brooklyn-born star dishes on her larger-than-life confidence, fashion philosophy and what she won’t do to fit in designer clothes. Dressed in a slinky, red Tommy Hilfiger dress and strands of diamonds from famed jewelers Harry Winston, Kwiat and Chopard, she tells the magazine of her glam look, “I feel like a model.” And while Gabourey can pose for the camera like any seasoned pro, her confidence didn’t come as easily as it may seem. “It came late, too late in my life,” she recalls of changing her attitude. “One day I decided that I was beautiful, and so I carried out my life as if I was a beautiful girl.” And now, Gabourey goes for bold colors and glam gowns, including her favorite — the David Meister number she wore to the L.A. premiere of Precious. “It was so va va voom, my boobs looked so good in it. I had diamonds on too. Diamonds really do it.” Other than show-stopping bling, Gabourey says, “I wear colors that I really like, I wear makeup that makes me feel pretty, and it really helps.” And even though Gabourey has traded Torrid for designer labels, she promises that she won’t be slimming down any time soon to fit into sample sizes. “I hate yoga so much. Like if yoga was a person, I’d stab them,” she jokes. “It doesn’t make any sense to kill yourself, because who are you trying to be beautiful for? It’s a mind game, not a body game.” Hear more from Gabourey Sidibe in the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar, on newsstands January 12, or at harpersbazaar.com.

BEAUTIFUL – ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. I wish more women in the world would have as much confidence in their bodies like this lady. The world would be a happier place if we all just sat down and had a cheeseburger with some fries. Enjoy your life and your body. It’s what God gave you – so be happy with it. U GO GIRL!!! MUCH LOVE TO YA SISTA :-)

Gabby will likely not be fine. I’m overweight, too, and while I do know it’s important to have confidence and feel good about one’s body, I also know that obesity is NOT healthy. So while her attitude is inspiring, we definitely should not be glorifying her. She’s got a body type as extreme as emaciated models. We need to praise healthy women whose bodies are somewhere in the middle.

if she has a gland problem she should say that instead of being quoted as trying to kill yoga. AND she should be seeking medication for that b/c her glad problem is causing her to be morbidly obese

Get real – you’re fat and unhealthy – stop saying your happy and join WW NOW!!!

Just because she’s heavy does not mean she’s unhealthy. All women come in different shapes and sizes! All the haters need to keep their comments to themselves and be happy for this woman and the wonderful self confidence she has! I wish I had half the self confidence she does!

It is great that she has confidence but it isn’t about being “thin”…it is about being healthy.

I totally agree with the obesity comments. I was exactly like Gabourey….that is, until I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes and sleep apnea. There’s a point where it’s not being confident anymore, but just learning to ignore your body’s cries for help. I hope she works a little down before she ends up in the same boat as I was.

Admire the spirit…..but damn, any doctor will tell you to maintain a healthy weight and her weight does NOT look healthy and she’s not “curvy” either….she’s overweight – plain and simple!

unfortunate that very heavy women and men try to justify being overweight or obese, which is a risk factor for so many health and life-shortening conditions.
