Stylist Nicola Formichetti On Lady Gaga: "It Was An Instant Love"

Lady Gaga made headlines all through 2009 with her outrageous looks both on- and off-stage. And while her Muppet-adorned dresses and lack of pants will forever be associated with the artist, she wasn’t alone in creating her signature style. Meet the man behind Gaga’s wacky fashions, stylist Nicola Formichetti. In an a recent interview with T Magazine, the behind-the-scenes fashion star shares his love for all things fashion, including his client Lady Gaga. Nicola, who has styled ad campaigns for everyone from Uniqlo to Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander McQueen, is one of the few who isn’t generally fond of celebrities mixing with fashion. “There’s way too much celebrity in fashion. I don’t really like working with celebrities, so I try to stay away from that whole machine,” he tells T Magazine. But when he met Lady Gaga at a V Magazine shoot, their instant chemistry changed all that. “It was an instant love. I had always stayed away from celebrity and musicians before, but she was so different. Instantly we understood each other completely. We started working naturally — all the videos, shows, tours, etc.,” says Nicola. So how does he come up with Lady Gaga’s jaw-dropping looks? “I get inspired from people around me: my friends, collaborators, designers and photographers,” he says. “I also have a huge toy collection that I often source through for ideas, but most importantly I find that traveling and visiting new places is very inspiring.” Read more from Nicola’s interview with T Magazine here. –Andrea DeSimone

Seriously… if you had any modicum of talent, you wouldn’t have to do this type of stunt to be noticed. I’m just sayin’…

Amanda on

Kerri– I could not agree with your comment more.
Gaga is always looking to “make a statement” for the cameras..

Jessica on

Kerri, pretty sure Madonna was the same way early in her career. I don’t care if she tries to go above and beyond as a performer. It’s more interesting than seeing the same generic, blonde, orange, vapid pop stars over and over.

Jess on

I agree with Jessica. Gaga is an artist and is expressing herself. Open up your mind people

I like her outfits more now after hearing her explanation for wearing them. She is a wonderful person trying to send out a good message.

Natasha on

Seriously? well, I guess people with horrible fashion sense stick together eh?

Kerri—- Have you heard this woman sing?!? And I’m not talking synthesized out, I’m saying sitting at her piano SINGING? She has more talent than half the women in the business. But that isn’t enough to stand out these days. She has to be flashy to be noticed in the first place. Sadly for people like you who just assume she’s talentless and don’t listen, you miss out on a phenomenal talent. Who cares what she looks like? You’re supposed to LISTEN to music, not care what the person looks like.

i feel that lady gaga is a alsome person and that she knows hoe to get to people i love her music and the way she dresses if i could i would want to br just like her

Get a grip people. This is artistic expression and it is show business after all. She is refreshing, not doing the same old same old stuff. I look forward to seeing her outdo herself. As mentioned earlier, she can really sing and play the piano, but the public always wants more and she delivers.

Pretty sure that she dresses the way she does to get noticed. Regardless of her talent or lack of talent – this woman has made it, because she understands what sells. You’ve got to respect that. :)

Carolina on

Yes, she dressed strangely but somehow it works..I think she stands out from the boring, bubblegum performers out there. On top of that she has a phenomenal voice.

If you think Lady Gaga is the most outrageous person ever, you’ve obviously never heard of Cher, Gwar, Kiss, Marilyn Manson, the Opera, Cirque de Soleil etc etc etc. It’s not like she’s inventing something new – it’s all theatre in the end. What makes LG special is that she has talent too!
Personally, I’m happy she’s around. Life needs a little glitter and she fills my daily quotient entirely by herself.
Yay.

I like Lady Gaga’s music but I have to admit, artist or not, she is a funky dresser. I mean think about, some of you people who are praising her for wearing these “things” are the same people that made of the girl in high school that wore cloths that were off-beat and different. I respect her courage for making such a strange fashion statement but come on. I can’t think of one outfit that she has worn that I would like to wear anywhere except for a Halloween party. Lady Gaga, you have some great music but it would be nice to see you in a classic glam look next time. You know, pretty.

Dawn on

@ Melissa: In general her clothes are pretty crazy but a few weeks ago she wore a really great Valentino gown (granted it was paired with the hair-bow/bow-made-of-hair)

I don’t particularly like Lady Gaga, but she is to pop what Cher was to folk rock. It’s eccentric and attention getting, and it works. I respect her 100% commitment to her odd dress. She doesn’t just ‘kind of’ do it, she goes all the way. And she really does it well. Her outfits are well crafted art – even if it is eccentric art. Have you ever seen her perform? She is 100% committed to every second on stage. She might not be the best quality singer, but her songs are catchy – so much so that she, as a new artist, has already had five number one hits. That’s no small feat. Like I said, I don’t really like her style or her music (nor do I have any of it downloaded on my iPod), but I can respect anybody with her type of commitment to being an artist and entertainer. I’d rather see somebody being different than just another cookie cutter, regurgitated Disney pop bimbo with a drug habit, daddy issues and a mom ‘managing’ the whole downfall: Britney, Lindsay, Jessica, Jamie, Miley, Misha, Hayden, the list goes on and on…

s on

she is pretty crazy but hey its her choice…i just think certain places call for a certain type of outfit and thats when she needs to be careful other than that i think if she is good with the way she looks then who cares what ppl think :D

Connie on

Well, I bet she goes unnoticed in public without her wig(s) and costumes…a plus for a famous person. The first thing I thought of when I saw her was Madonna II.

Rizzo on

Before anybody insults Gaga’s “lack of talent”, you may wanna do a little research…really…it only takes a few minutes on Wikipedia or Google to realize how ignorant anyone sounds making that statement. If you don’t like her music/style/image…that’s fine. But, go check out her performance at NYU or any unplugged version of her at the piano and you’ll see how “untalented” she is.

E on

I don’t think half the people out there get it. She doesn’t want to look ‘pretty’ and what she wears aren’t ‘costumes’ if you listen to any interview with her, all she ever presses is that this is her, all the time, and she’s making constant art, or at least trying to. It may be about attention a little bit but i genuinely think this girl is very honest and unique, almost to the point that she’s a little mental. Best thing to come out of pop in a long time!

Anita on

I wish that I could wear those outfits every day
I have always dreamed of being a talk show host and coming out with outfits like that.
I think it is a good thing, it makes singing very theatrical. Look at Cher and Madonna -they went all out. We live in a visual world and we need to feed that. I think GaGa with or without costumes is a beautiful singer and performer. The designers can’t sell this stuff to ordinary people, they need to do their thing and if it is for those pop stars , I think it is wonderful

An impressive share, I just given this onto a clleoague who was doing a little analysis on this. And he in fact bought me breakfast because I found it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love reading more on this topic. If possible, as you become expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more details? It is highly helpful for me. Big thumb up for this blog post!
