Glee's Mark Salling on His Hair: "I Hate the Mohawk"

12/07/2009 at 09:30 AM ET

Matthias Clamer/FOX

Mark Salling, 27, who plays resident bad boy and high school jock Puck on Glee, isn’t so fond of his character’s signature hair. “I’m so over the mohawk, I’m not gonna lie,” Salling reveals. “I hate the mohawk.” The hairstyle which made him unofficially known as “the guy with the mohawk” first came about four months before his Glee audition when he had knee surgery, then he shaved it again when he auditioned for the musical comedy, and now he’s stuck with the cut. “It was cool for a while, but I’ve had it for like a year, you know I’m kind of over it,” Salling says. “I feel better when I don’t have it.” Over the past few months, he didn’t have the ‘do while the show was on hiatus, but he was spotted with it again last Thursday at Bryant Park in NY at the Marshalls and T.J. Maxx’s “Carol-Oke” Contest. The actor, who was recently featured in PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive issue jokes that the mohawk’s powers have helped him achieve his spot in the issue, “It’s the secret.” But don’t just chalk up his sex appeal just to his hair do. The actor is a self-described hopeless romantic and has a few tricks up his sleeve to win over a girl’s heart. “In high school I had a girlfriend, “ Salling says. “There was this field near where I lived. I took little plate-sized rocks and arranged them in a heart under a tree and didn’t tell her. I just took her out there and was like, ‘look where we are.'” Ladies, as you swoon over his romantic side, see if you fit his type: “I like a girl who doesn’t play any games.” Salling says. “I like a very sweet girl.” — Aileen Wong

I love the mohawk on him! Heck, any type of hairstyle would look good on this hot of a man.

Will you marry me Mark? lol gosh your ridiculously handsome!

Heather on

He’s hot. But a 27 playing a 17 year old? Come on…

I am so relieved he is 27! I think he is so cute and I have been feeling creepy because I thought he was a teenager…Phew…now I can go back to salivating in peace…

Mark is the hottest dude in the show. All the Gay Men ih Hollywood love and adores him. Whoooaaa

Jennifer on

This guy is nowhere near hot. I just don’t see it – mohawk or not. Put down the Kool-Aid, people.

Annie on

I love him yeah the mohawk is HOT, but he’s still pretty damn hot without it I mean he’s the HOTTEST man on the planet!!!!!!!!!!!!! *drools*

Sheila on

Christ, he’s TWENTY SEVEN? Playing a highschooler? Yikes.

Kimmy on

Mohawk, Bald, Long or short hair. He would still be People’s top sexy!

Rarely does a show`s actors or actresses have the same age as their characters P:

But Mark/Puck does a great job anyway, everyone on the show does!

It`s nice to know he`s actually a sweet guy…he was getting convincing on the show :)

Whitney on

I don’t like the mohawk either. It’s very 2003 but perfect for Puck. On Mark, any haircut would do. I prefer the shaved look best. All you need to showcase is that gorgeous face!

Miss Megan on

Either way he looks good! He’s pretty much my #1 unattainable!

Kahi on

I don’t care about his hairstyle, although it does get a lot of attention, but he doesn’t even need the mohawk to point out that he is obviously HOT, and I am sure his personality is just as HOT as he is.

Ivaah on

hha . I reckon he still looks SEXY ! no matter the hair cut ! LOL

Actually both Mark Salling and Cory Monteith (Fin) are both 27 and Matthew Morrison (Mr. Schuester)is only 31, I thought that it was crazy that someone playing the teacher is only 4 years older than the guys playing teenagers. I love Puck (& Mark of coarse). Glee is one of the best shows I have seen on television in a very long time. I am really irritated that there will be a 4 month break because of American Idol, If I wasn’t already so over AI, I would be now!!!! Why would you take a 4 month break this early into the first season. Glee better hope that people will still want to watch them after that long.

alguien on

I don’t get why he had to shave his hair for a knee surgery.. o_0

TC on

I hate the Mohawk. He’s mucher hotter without it. Saw the cast on Tyra and he didn’t have it. I’d hit that!

OMG!! He’s soo hot, with or without the mohawk. And I definitely fit the ‘sweet type’ haha.

@ Jessica Shaw:
Glee is taking a break because they have only been approved for 13 episodes at first. Now that they have been given a green light for the rest 9 episode of season 1, they are starting to film it. Today is actually the first day they start rehearsals.

Jus Russo on

Mark, why are you so precious?! And it’s definitely not because of the mohawk :) <3

Why are so many people making a big deal about a 27-yr-old guy playing a high schooler? SO MANY actors and actresses have done this in the past few decades.

For example, Stacey Dash (who played Dionne, Cher’s best friend in the movie “Clueless”) was 28 when it was filmed. She has kept her age well over the years, and she still looks 20-something even though she’s well in her 40s.

Also, Alan Ruck (who played Cameron, Ferris’s best friend in the movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”) was 29 when it was filmed. Matthew Broderick was 23 when he played Ferris in that film.

So really, it is VERY commonplace for actors to do roles a decade or more younger than their actual age.

For the first acronym, you have “A.I.D.A.”, which I believe to be correct, but when you write them out, you have “Desire” listed after “Action.” Not a biggie, but maybe you want to fix that when you have a chance? (The editor in me is just trying to help!)
