Gwyneth Paltrow’s Holiday Shopping List

12/03/2009 at 01:00 PM ET

Soul Brother/FilmMagic

Gwyneth Paltrow takes a shot at solving the holiday gift conundrum and offers a slew of recommendations and exclusive discounts on her site, GOOP.com. The actress gravitates toward personalized presents (“What better way to show someone your love?” she says), like Em Tanner’s melamine plates, which can be customized with cartoon portraits of your family members, and that Paltrow reveals “quickly became a colorful basic in my kitchen this year.” The one-of-a-kind framed prints she discovered while shopping at a toy store in Brooklyn, made to order with a figurine in your child’s likeness along with his or her name, also made her cut, along with L.L. Bean’s classic-preppy monogrammed canvas totes—“a must-have on all my trips,” declares Paltrow. And from her own aromatherapist (who also counts Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio as clients), of whom the 37 year-old star says, “Every time I visit Dr. Sharon I leave feeling relaxed, bright and new,” there’s a kit comprised of scented candle and fragrant oil, which Paltrow suggests rubbing “on your wrists, behind your ears, and on your temples,” for de-stressing and pampering. See more of Paltrow’s suggestions at GOOP.com. Tell us: What do you think of Gwyneth’s gift picks?

I do not like Ms. Paltrow. Every since she had children and went on to speak about how all woman should stay home to raise their children, blah, blah, blah. She appears to be a spoiled brat. She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She has never known a day of hardship and she never will. Maybe she should consider taking her christmas list and giving it to people who need it…

Jackie on

I don’t like her at all anymore. She seems to me the antithesis of a down-to-earth actress. THere seems to be a status-obsessed smugness about her. And how ridiculous to publicize a Christmas list. She says that these gifts are about showing people you love them. The irony is that her Christmas list (and her publicizing of it)is about as impersonal as a list can get.

I love Gwennie and GOOP! Keep it up girl..you ROCK!

Susan on

I agree with the above comments. Her ideas are outrageous. Most normal people could not afford to give extravagant gifts like she is talking about and her monogrammed “must have” LL bean bag please and who really has time to destress and pamper with expensive oil. I guess if you have nothing better to do, this is what you do all day long think up crazy expensive gifts and visit your aromatherapist! Ha ha

I used to love Gwynneth and the movies she was in. But after she started her GOOP site, she comes across as a younger, snobbier Martha Stewart.

Maybe Gwynneth is very nice in real life.. it’s just that she comes across as a bit of a know-it-all now and that’s why people seem to resent her.

CH on

I really like her. It’s nice to see a different side of her, deboning ducks, cooking, working out, suggesting summer reads. . . For people who are taking GOOP really seriously, take a deep breath and relax. When did she say she was writing a blog for the every-woman?? She’s doing this for fun and she and her friends, family and fans are enjoying it.

Also, to the person who say she has never known any hardship, you are probably forgetting that she lost her father to cancer several years ago. Don’t be so quick to judge people. If her things are to expensive for you to buy, then go buy things somewhere else but be creative enough to get ideas from her suggestions and make them work for you. Geez! lol

LBW on

I really really like her mom. Gwynneth comes across as very cold. If she were approached for an autograph she would probably call the police.

I think GP is GReat! I don’t see whats wrong with her just helping other women by giving good advise. All the best to her and her family.

P/S- While I am a fan I think Apple was a strange name for a child, the poor kid may have a hard time at school beause of her name.

I really think that those who are bashing Gwyneth should shut up. She takes all her extra time and puts it towards the ezine, GOOP. It is filled with great ideas, recipes, thoughts on life etc. Apparently everyone is soo put together that they don’t need a little guidance. She is not out shopping galore, ruining peoples marriages, causing drama or clubbing and thats what people like…

I still love Gwyneth. In the beginning, her website was annoying (and I still don’t get the name) but lately its had some really good ideas. We all know she’s an elitest. Get used to it and appreciate her for who she is! She’s a good actress and a style icon.

In my estimation, GP has gone down the same path as Tom Cruise. The more I hear hear speak, the more I wish I were deaf. Her suggestions are simultaneously pedestrian and elitist. I guess that’s sort of an accomplishment, right? GOOP is nauseating and GP is as compelling as a sugar-free Popsicle, and just as warm. I fear her globe-trotting could bring about a new ice age. Brrrr!

i think her finds are thoughtful…love it!
for people who put thought into the things they make and give, it’s really a great resource.
like martha stewart, she makes taking care of people and the house an art form and i love it.
although i’m a busy working woman, love to be a
domestic diva.

LauraCo on

What?! Colon cleanse didn’t make the list????

Danielle on

All of these celebrities are OVERPAID. There are a few who actually “worked” their way to the top…but some of them were “born” into the biz….But athletes are OVERPAID as well….

She is okay, but not all of us “mom’s” can afford to stay home or hire nannies to take care of our children. We do what we have to do.

Lauren on

Not a fan of hers anymore. What a SNOB!

Nacho on

Let me re-phrase my word “hardship”… I meant financial hardship.. Yes her father passed away, so did mine, and my 2 grandmothers, and my 3 uncles and 3 aunts all in a matter of 2 years….but I’m guessing where to get the money to bury her father was not an issue…
People are trying to figure out how to save their houses, how to feed their children, and she is going on about her “must have” monogrammed bag…
give me a break.

deen on

She went to the Upper East Side school that Gossip Girl is based on. She’s like Blair Waldorf gone Hollywood gone pseudo-earth-mom, both status-obsessed and self-righteous, a most annoying combination. If I had full-time nannies and 3 houses and chauffeurs and personal assistants, I too could compile overpriced shopping lists.

I hate Gwyneth Paltrow–I am so sick of her that I actually will not see a movie if she is in it. I am so bummed that she is in iron man because I love Robert Downey Jr. I am crazy about him…totally rooting for him and she just stinks it up……She has had everything handed to her and behaves as if she did it all on her own.

Wow! Could GP be more annoying. This girl is so out of touch with the real world. Monogramed tote bags that cost enough to feed a family of four for a day or so. What a thoughtful gift! What a sanctimonious snob…

Kiki on

For those who hates Gwyneth so much because you think she’s a snob and her blog is blah, shame on you for judging people based on their appearance. Have you actually known her personally? So what if she comes off as cold and aloof? Some people call it classy and graceful. I don’t believe she’s like that in real life. It’s all just an image people branded her to be. Why be so hard on her blog? These days, lots of people write blogs for fun. She has some good recipes and tips to share. Plus, I find her Christmas list quite interesting, since the gifts she mentions are actually quite unique. Flip through any magazine or newspaper, the gifts others recommend are way pricier than what’s on her list. Her finds are actually not that outrageously expensive, considering how much we spend on gifts during Christmas. People need to relax and stop judging her.

Donna on

Okay, we all know Gwyneth doesn’t live like most of us posting, but, so what? I checked out all of the associated websites & while some of the gifts may be a tad pricey, they truly are fun & unique for those that can wish to give them. I especially liked Ida Pearle’s wonderful, colorful prints.

ELAJZ on

I don’t understand why everyone is so critical of her newsletter. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. Some of the things that she writes about do not relate to my life at all. However, some things are very informative, like advice about vitamins and supplements, and advice from some respected sources about holiday family interaction.
Also, one comment cracked me up. Since when is L.L. Bean an elitist brand?

Jess on

The gifts are nothing really special but they’re not as pricey as some of last year’s list. She doesn’t write that newsletter either. She has a web design/editorial team that handles that for her.

jane on

Disappointing. I mean, I normally enjoy reading goop. It’s not always that interesting, but I still skim it whenever a new one is posted. My problem with this posting is how overpriced her suggestions are. Normally her ideas/suggestions are reasonable and accessible. But these are ridiculous. Who would/could afford a $124 little teddy bear or a $139 christmas stocking?? $30 for 6 cookies? This is certainly not practical for most people. This is the first time I think Gywneth really lost touch in this blog, so I’m willing to cut her some slack, but let’s not have it happen too much, or she’ll lose a lot of readership.

james on

this is a really great site, thanks for the great info. I am going to keep reading more of your stuff
