EXCLUSIVE: Heidi Klum on Becoming Barbie: “A Dream Come True”

inset: Flynet

Who could resist being made into a Barbie doll? Certainly not Heidi Klum. “I am so into Barbie,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively. “It has been a dream come true.” For her Barbie, which hit shelves in September as part of Barbie’s Blonde Ambition collection, the supermodel decided to recreate her duet performance with husband Seal at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. “I thought this would be something that Leni would really like, and it was a really great moment for me,” says Heidi of the doll’s Ungaro-inspired sequin mini and a replica of Heidi’s wedding band and diamond ring. “I had to pick a moment that is me, otherwise, I would have been a princess.” But she doesn’t just love her own doll — as a Barbie doll collector, some of Heidi’s most treasured dolls are Bob Mackie Barbies, including the Empress Bride and Fantasy Goddess of Africa. “[Bob Mackie] comes up with the most magical, spectacular, over-the-top pieces. He really turns up the volume on these.” And while there is no plan yet for a collaboration between the supermodel and famed costume designer, Heidi already has a vision for her Bob Mackie doll. “I want to be a princess [with] the fluffiest, biggest dress with feathers, glitter, fairy dust and glass ballet slippers,” says Heidi. “You know, something that would be a dream come true for a little girl.” Bob Mackie, are you listening? Annie Leibovitz /Vogue

Talk about an all-star cast! Kate Hudson, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Fergie and Marion Cotillard team up with screen legends Sophia Loren and Judi Dench to star in the musical Nine along with leading man Daniel Day-Lewis. And though the much-anticipated musical won’t hit the big screen until November 25, Vogue has already caught a glimpse of the killer costumes created by Oscar-award winner Colleen Atwood, who designed couture-like fashions that date back to the ’20s. And while the extras were decked in vintage, the superstar leading ladies had custom-made costumes to make it easier to sing and dance — 350 costumes and 200 pairs of shoes between them! Expect frilly garter belts, satin-and-lace bras, bustiers, hot pants, flapper dresses and fluffy ostrich-feather fans everywhere. The leading ladies tell Vogue how thrilled they are to be part of the movie, with Hudson gushing, “I spent most of my childhood singing and dancing and just never had the chance to do it professionally. So when I got the chance to work with Rob, I was so excited, I was out of my mind.” Marion confesses to a childhood longing to do musicals as well, “It’s been my dream to do an American musical. When I was a child, Annie was my favorite. I just never thought I would get to do it.” Read more from Vogue‘s behind-the-scenes peek only at Style.com, including interviews with the A-list cast, and then be sure to pick up a copy of the November issue, on newsstands October 13. Project Runway‘s hosts are really making it work as Heidi Klum and Michael Kors team up with Saks Fifth Avenue for their annual Key to the Cure campaign to raise money for women’s cancer charities. Kors has created a limited-edition T-shirt that the supermodel will wear in a national public service announcement featured in major fashion and lifestyle magazines through the months of September and October. As the campaign’s ambassador, Heidi joins the ranks of Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron and more who have all held the honor in previous years. The Michael Kors limited-edition T-shirts are available at Saks.com and Saks Fifth Avenue stores for $40, with $34 from the sale of each tee benefitting local women’s cancer charities. Or wait until October 15-18, when Saks will donate 2% of sales (up to $250,000) from the shopping weekend to local and national women’s cancer organizations and research centers.
