Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Get Shady for Their New Design Venture -- Sunglasses!

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have made oversize shades a signature part of their style, so it’s no wonder that the superstar designers have chosen to add vintage-inspired shades to their luxury label The Row. And though The Row’s sunglass collection won’t be hitting stores until spring, Mary-Kate is already showing it off. The designer secretly debuted an oversized square frame — one of four styles that make up the collection — at the Burberry runway show during London Fashion Week. The other three styles include a classic metal aviator, vintage-inspired brow-line and a pair of round shades taken from the ’60s, according to WWD. “We’re testing the market first and obviously these are four very different silhouettes, so we’re seeing what people are responding to and we’ll open up a couple more silhouettes for fall,” Ashley tells WWD of the collaboration with Linda Farrow Eyewear, who is already responsible for Bernard Wilhelm, Dries Van Noten and Jeremy Scott’s edgy eyewear. Mary-Kate and Ashley have already made a mark in the accessories market with jewelry and shoes for their contemporary label, Elizabeth and James, but adding sunglasses proved to be a new challenge for the designers. “Designing eyewear was definitely more complicated than we thought, and of course, we wanted to be extremely hands-on,” Mary-Kate tells WWD. Sunglasses for The Row are expected to hit high-end department stores for spring with prices ranging from $325- $390. So far, we love what we see! Tell us: Will you buy sunglasses from The Row?

The prices these girls charge for their lines are totally offensive. They are not real designers. They do not know how to cut fabric and sew to a manaquin. Get those Beetches on Project Runway and see how they fare. It’s really insulting, especially in this economy that they think they can charge so much. Nothing should be over $100.

Cecil on

But, Puke, they do know how to make money on their name. They can call themselves whatever they want, just so the money keeps coming in.

I believe they are designers ask tommy,or calvin to go on project runway .green monster on your shoulder?

lexi on

What is it to you if the price is 300???? just because your cheap doesnt mean the rest of us are. I love their fashion line, its great. Its only offensive to you because you dont know what good fashion is.

LBW on

Sun glasses are nice. Her outfit is that of a bag lady. Young pretty women should be wearing young pretty clothes…especially when you can afford anything you want. Dressing like an old crone does not say designer to me.

Really? on

I agree with you, Puke! In this economy, you’d think the target market for products such as sunglasses would be to the middle class, and I don’t know anyone in the middle class who would drop $300+ for a single pair of accessory sunglasses. It seems like I’m buying a new pair every couple weeks because they’re constantly getting lost or drop-kicked. $300 for sunglasses? I’ll stick to my “cheapy” Target brands, thanks!

Dy on

I would absolutely love to buy the shades that are pictured, but at $300+ I think I’ll just be content to look at them. Obviously, they’re advertising for the Hollywood crowd, who for some reason, isn’t going through the same recession that the rest of us are! Wait, isn’t California broke now, too?

I am a middle-class person and paid $360 for my sunglasses that I absolutely love. Middle-class doesn’t mean that you are poor and if you save up then you can buy cool fashion things. I actually take care of my things so I never drop my sunglasses or break them. It is called responsibility.

Chanel, Gucci, and Christian Dior (Solstice Outlet)-yes. The young ladies who also design a line for Wal-Mart-no.

Group87 on

Just keep in mind. The target consumer. People who can and will spend the bucks. I say if you can afford them. and really want them…buy them Don’t rag on the price. I’ve seen Ray Bans costing over 200.00…

Get real on

In this economy the Olsen girls need to be real – who can spend that kind of $ on sunglasses. They are just sunglasses!! I agree – stick to Target shopping/prices.

Not only can you be fashionable on a budget, it’s more interesting and exciting that way. It feels great to go in to TJ Maxx or Target and find something great to pair with a more expensive pair of jeans or shoes. There is so much more creativity required to think about fashion rather than just buy what’s on the rack. Spending $300 on a pair of sunglasses is just plain silly. You could spend $300 on tons of new clothes to really update your wardrobe and use some creativity doing it. Middle class, upper class, lower class – who cares? Fashion is all about you and what you love no matter how much it costs.

Mary-Kate & Ashley have a mega clothing & make up line for young ladies sold at WAL-MART, which they started first.

Marie on

These girls are beautiful and very rich, I don’t understand why they have to keep making money – they are set for life, they can afford to go lower than $300 for a pair of sunglasses. The Greed, is too much!

JB on

Ok Lexi, get a grip and welcome to reality. Paying $300 for sunglasses is outrageous and economically unsound. I wonder if you’re asking your parents to pay the price because a woman to pay that would be NUTS

Enfrid on

Sorry, way too expensive for me although I keep wondering what line they’ll design next. I wish them the best, though…..

zami on

Again, pricing depends on the target market (no, I don’t mean TARGET). I’m sure their Wal-Mart lines are reasonably priced. They’re obviously targeting the upper-middle/upper class consumer with this new line of designer sunglasses. So be it. If you can comfortably afford them, go for it! I’m sure the rest of us can find similar but less expensive shades and no one will be the wiser fashion-wise or pocketbook-wise. I say to each his own.

I LOVE MARY-KATE AND ASHLEY, BUT I WOULD NEVER BUY THE JUNK THAT THEY SELL. THEIR STUFF IS VERY EXPENSIVE AND THE QUALITY IS CHEAP. BESIDES THEIR RICH AND I DON’T SEE WHY THEY CAN’T MAKE SUNGLASSES CHEAPER FOR BUDGET FRIENDLY PEOPLE.

LookaLike on

this womps!! i also have the bobble head with the stick thin 12 yr old body…so naturally i try to look for the celebrity look a likes so i can get some great style ideas…just my luck, its the olsen twins and they look ridiculous…i can’t take any fashion advice from them unless im spending the night in or out for halloween. ughhh why couldn’t i look more like a kardashian!!!?

Heather on

Another thing…why would anybody want to buy a pair of $300 sunglasses? What is special about them?? They have a name on them yes…but are they like superman sunglasses or something? Will nothing ever happen to them? Do they have some protection on them so they never scratch or break? Just saying….lol!!

sophie on

Im sorry, but these girls always look like a hot mess :(

Mary on

I find it ridiculous that some people here are complaining about the cost of a pair of sunglasses. The Olsen twins’ designer lines are targeted to those with lots of money to spend. Even in this economy, there are still lots of people with good jobs and open pocketbooks. But no one is forcing anyone to buy their sunglasses. There are plenty other options. It’s like complaining, “BMW’s cars are so expensive, why can’t they make them cheap for ME so that I can buy it?”

If you can’t afford it, then don’t buy it! It’s that simple.

She looks like a cheap imitation of Courtney LoveXP

Oh great! $300 bug eyed sunglasses.
Can’t wait. Not

Sorry, as a person with 2 kids under the age of 4, you will not catch me buying a pair of sunglasses over 10 bucks….1 reason they will get broke and scrathed….second reason i have more important things to spend my money on, like a college future for my kids….

langee on

pretty sure they went to school for fashion… just because they were famous before they started designing clothes doesn’t mean they’re fakes. They’re very involved in all of their projects so don’t be bitter ;)

They have made oversize everything part of their signature style.

no. i can go to the local dollar store and get the same “style” for less than or equal to five dollars.

$300 to $400 for sunglasses is very steep. I would rather pay rent or a utility bill with that than to buy a pair of sunglasses that will not be in style in a year. Thanks anyway!
