Katharine McPhee Dishes On Going Blonde

Humberto Carreno/Startraks

It’s been over a month since Katharine McPhee gave PEOPLE an exclusive sneak peek at her new platinum look on her album cover. Yet she still managed to wait until Fashion Week to reveal the look on the red carpet. Katharine spoke with PEOPLE backstage at the Tommy Hilfiger show in Manhattan’s Bryant Park tents about what prompted her to trade her signature sexy brunette style for being a blonde-bobbed bombshell. “I have a record coming out in January called Unbroken,” she explains, “and I’ve been working on it for the last year and it’s been a big artistic development. It sort of felt like I was shedding skin, so I was literally shedding layers of hair.” Tell us: What do you think of Katharine’s blonde hair? –Reporting by Jeffrey Slonim

Peaches Geldof On Her New Purple Hair: “I’d Exhausted Every Other Option”

Jason Kempin/Getty

The clothing wasn’t the bright thing at Anna Sui’s circus-themed runway show Wednesday night — for Peaches Geldof, it was her hair, too. The Brit It-girl debuted newly darkened locks in a rather unusual shade: dark purple. “I change it once every two months,” Geldof told PEOPLE, “and I thought purple because I’d exhausted every other option so why not?” As for the next color on her hair palette, “I want to go blue,” says the socialite. Sitting front row at Sui’s show in Bryant Park, Geldof enjoyed a low key appearance, ignoring the frenzy surrounding Olivia Palermo shooting a scene for The City with ELLE Creative Director Joe Zee, and instead focusing on the clothes on the catwalk. And what makes Sui one of her favorites? “She’s forward-thinking, but at the same time her collections reference back to eras like the ’70s and ’60s [where] really iconic moments in fashion happened,” said Geldof. And while neither parties have confirmed or denied the match-up, here’s to hoping that JPG will be the next designer stocking our closet with affordable gear.

Emma Watson Turns Designer For Charity!

Courtesy People Tree

Two months ago, style icon Emma Watson nixed the idea of creating her own celebrity fashion line — unless it benefited a charity. And it looks like she’s found her worthy cause. The Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince star has just announced that she’s lending her design talents to British fair-trade fashion label People Tree for a spring/summer collection of women’s and men’s apparel and accessories. But with so many worthwhile organizations out there, what prompted her to connect with the eco-friendly, socially-conscious brand? “I was excited by the idea of using fashion as a tool to help alleviate poverty and knew it was something I could help make a difference with,” she says. All sales from the line will be donated to the People Tree Foundation, which directly benefits fair-trade farmers and artisans in developing countries. The full collection, which includes everything from organic knitwear to t-shirts, dresses, shorts and jewelry, will hit shelves February 2010 at peopletree.com. Tell us: Will you buy Emma Watson’s designs?

EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: Glenn & Rose’s Bazaar Fashion Faceoff

Courtesy Harper’s Bazaar

Earlier this week Pink and Shakira experienced an accidental fashion faceoff at the VMAs in identical Balmain frocks. Showing uncannily good timing, the October issue of Harper’s Bazaar brings together Damages costars Glenn Close and Rose Byrne for a photo shoot that pits them against one another in a staged style showdown. Dressed in “age-appropriate” versions of the same look, the stars enact a fashion rivalry in the magazine’s pages — while revealing that their offscreen relationship is anything but unfriendly. Still, they do differ in their approaches to style, with Glenn joking, “I’m such a fashion maven,” of her laid-back style. “I come from a family that never shopped,” she explains. “When we were little, my mom would go out and get me one really good dress for winter, one really good dress for spring or for summer, and you wore them until you grew out of them.” Her onscreen style is a different story, with Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz taking inspiration from Glenn’s Damages character for his new capsule collection of suits. “I see how Patty could be a fashion inspiration,” Glenn says of her character’s wardrobe of chic suits. As for Rose, who reveals an affinity Rag & Bone, Brian Atwood, Chanel and Balmain, fashion is more at the forefront of her mind, but, she adds, “I’m Australian, so I’m not too flashy or glitzy.” Since encountering red-carpet scrutiny, however, Rose has learned one very important style lesson: “I’ve stopped dressing for other people. If I think Iook good, that’s the most important thing.” Click through for a sneak preview of the October cover, starring Janet Jackson, which hits stands Sept. 22.
