Usher Gives InStyle the Lowdown on Fashion and Fragrance

PA Photos/Landov

Recently it seems that Hollywood’s been abuzz about the smell of their leading men, with Oprah gushing over Jay-Z’s scent and Justin Timberlake singing the praises of Givenchy Play. Count in Usher, who in this month’s issue of InStyle gives readers the low-down on fashion, fatherhood — and fragrance. And while his latest fragrance, VIP, will be hitting shelves soon, his love of cologne is nothing new. “I would go to church with my granddad every Sunday, and he’d put on his Brut [by Faberge],” Usher tells the magazine. “I’d ask him for some, and he’d say, ‘Boy, you don’t want any of this. It’ll put hair on your chest.’” When it came to contemplating what line he’s like to put his name on, he went for staying-power. “I’ve thought about clothing and jewelry lines,” he explains, “but fragrance stays on when everything else comes off.” And while Usher might be known for rocking a wardrobe of elegant tuxedos and suave casual wear — plus a legendary collection of over 10,000 pairs of shoes — he offers up one very unexpected footwear must-have: Birkenstocks. “I got that from the Bay Area. Being a man of style means you’re not tied to one look.” Check out more of Usher’s interview in the 15th Anniversary issue ofInStyle with Jennifer Lopez on the cover, on stands now. Than tell us: What is your favorite scent for men?

Ed Hardy Designer On His Clothing Line Dedicated to Michael Jackson

PER/ Fame

Designer Christian Audigier has a loyal celeb following for his Ed Hardy clothing line, but he also works with some of Hollywood’s biggest names. He’s currently ironing out details for a clothing line with Jon Gosselin and is busy piecing together items for a line he created with the late Michael Jackson. “I did a collection when Michael was still alive that he was loving,” Audigier tells PEOPLE. “It was a big mix between Liberace and Elvis Presley. I gave him the first catalog and he was just blown away.” The line includes items like a red jacket with Jackson’s portrait on it, a black leather belt with large buckle reading ‘BAD,’ silver socks, silver gloves, and an umbrella. “Michael really wanted me to make an umbrella,” he says, mentioning the kick-off point for Jackson’s planned tour. “I think it was because London is rainy.” There is only one thing that is slowing him down from debuting this new product. He needs approval from Jackson’s estate to release the line. “I’m talking to the estate and trying to get a deal,” says the designer. “I hope they understand I was friends with Michael and this is what I want to do for Michael.” Watch Audigier on Today discussing the line by clicking here. -– Jessica Herndon

FIRST LOOK: Scarlett Johansson for Dolce & Gabbana’s New Fragrance

Courtesy Dolce&Gabbana

To debut their luxe cosmetics brand, The Makeup, Dolce & Gabbana would settle for nothing less than one of Hollywood’s modern muses. And when it came time to launch their new scent Rose The One, they turned again to Scarlett Johansson, and are sharing with PEOPLE.com the sultry star’s print campaign. The actress couldn’t be happier with the appropriately rose-hued results, which were shot by Jean Baptiste Mondino, explaining in a statement that Mondino and designers “capture all of a woman’s graces, our quiet moments. That to me, is what makes this campaign so special, and it feel wonderful to have been a part of the collaboration.” The floral fragrance, which is the final launch in The One trilogy of scents for the Italian designers, will debut next month with prices starting at $60 for a 30 ml eau de parfum spray. Tell us: What do you think of Scarlett’s sexy campaign?

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Clothing Line — for Charity!

Courtesy ZOEtee’s, inset: Soul Brother/Film

She may know how to wow us with a show-stopping premiere-style wardrobe of sky-high heels and body-skimming minidresses, but off the red carpet, Gwyneth Paltrow favors a more laidback approach. That might be why for her first foray into fashion design, the actress is collaborating with Parisian jersey label, ZOEtee’s for the capsule collection appropriately called ZOEtee’s LOVES Gwyneth Paltrow, which we first told you in March. And your wait is almost over to buy from the seven-piece line of easy-to-wear basics, which will launch exclusively at matchesfashion.com on Monday, August 24th. The collection features elegant, monochromatic day-to-evening jersey dresses, mesh studded vests, slouchy jumpsuits, cotton leggings and easy to wear blazers that mix masculine fabrics with a ’70s glam-rock feel in fabrics such as recycled cottons and cashmere blends with prices starting around $165. Although she doesn’t have a lot of design experience behind her, the actress was a natural fit for the label. “Gwyneth knows how to mix basics and give jersey an edge,” says Laure Pariente, Creative Director of ZOEtee’s. And perhaps taking a cue from her activist husband, Coldplay singer Chris Martin, all proceeds from sales go to Kids Company, one of Paltrow’s favorite charities. Muppets Take Fashion: Miss Piggy Teams Up With Marc Jacobs

Marion Curtis/StarPix

When Lady Gaga made a fashion statement wearing a coat of miniature Kermits, we knew Miss Piggy would be green with envy. So how does a Muppet get revenge on one of the biggest trendsetters in the world? Go couture, of course! Miss Piggy called in a fashionable favor from one of the world’s most famous designers — Marc Jacobs! And though he has dressed some of Hollywood’s hottest stars including Victoria Beckham, Anne Hathaway and Madonna, the designer made some time for Miss Piggy this week, inviting the plush diva to his SoHo studio to go over looks for New York’s upcoming fashion week. So does this mean Miss Piggy will be taking a much coveted front row seat come September? We certainly hope so! But we do know for sure she will be showing off a Marc Jacobs couture gown at this week’s Glamorama event in Chicago. Here’s to hoping Lady Gaga and Miss Piggy square off across the catwalk!
