Ashley Olsen Talks Fashion: "Either You Care or You Don't"

Ashley Olsen has moved seamlessly from child star to star designer, with successful lines Elizabeth and James and The Row under her petite belt, but the way she sees it, she dodged a bullet. Speaking to Marie Claire of her tightly-regimented childhood, she muses, “That’s why I look at Britney, and I’m surprised I didn’t end up like her.” Her saving grace may have been her love of fashion and innate taste level. “I think you’re either born with a sense of style or you’re not,” she tells Marie Claire, which is on newstands August 11. “Either you care or you don’t.” Ashley and her twin, Mary-Kate, “love fashion,” she says. “When we were going to NYU, I think that was the first time we were aware of the power of our personal style. Not the power of it, but the result of it.” The endless press coverage of their every outfit was a surprise at the beginning. “Between the big sunglasses and Starbucks cup and the big sweaters, the hobo-chic thing, we were more shocked than anything,” she says. For the twins, it’s just a natural choice. “Mary-Kate and I are very aware of trends and style, but at the end of the day, we don’t even think twice about it,” she says. “It’s just, ‘What do I feel like wearing today, and how do I want to put it together.'” And for both sisters, they are always willing to take a risk, even if it means destroying a designer piece. “The amount of beautiful things we’ve ruined — not having the patience for a tailor and cutting everything ourselves … My sister once took an Alaïa dress of mine and just cut the whole thing, and then she was like, ‘I cut it too short.'” Ashley has to laugh. “Mary-Kate and I don’t think about fashion as these clean, beautiful objects. We just kind of wear it and live in it.”

They obviously don’t think about style because they always look like they just rolled out of bed. Looking unwashed and unkempt is not pretty.

Style is an innate sense. Attention is one thing, attempting is another. Style is it is not something created. It is something kindred and understood. I’m so sorry, but some people might not grasp it. And sadly, MK & A, may be one of them. Are they risky? Yes. Inventive? Perhaps. Stylish? Perhaps. Do they live fashion? No, not yet.

but they’re most certainly on their way.

First of all my little troll doll, one is not born with a sense of fashion or we would all come out of our mothers womb wearing high fashion and not anything from Elizabeth and James. It is learned and developed by living in this material world. Beauty will always be in the eye of the beholder and ones fashion prefrence can be anothers nightmare. Thats why when I see pictures of you or your twin sister I cringe especially when some fool fashion editor is applauding your tacky ill fitting fashion sense. Also please do not compare yourself to Britney because your acting career mostly consists of kiddie movies with horrible acting. Clever marketing may have made you filthy rich but not talent. Britney is an excellent performer and her story is so different from yours.

“Either you care or you don’t” is what she says so she must not because her outfits either look like they’ve been malled by racoons or WERE malled by racoons

Jay, I simply must disagree, fashion sense, much like charisma is very much born and not learned. Yes, you develop and sharpen this tool over time but I have a sister w/ the vision and I can promise it’s been there since day one however aware or unaware she was of it.
The cover is laughable though, Ashley spills her secrets? She’s 23, she hasn’t had time to amount secrets. Now Catherine Zeta-Jones, I’ll take her secrets any day!

Ah to have enough money to “[destroy] a designer piece” like an Alaia.

“Either you care or you don’t.” So wise beyond her years.

These two are so far removed from the real world fashion, that destroying a designer piece and laughing about it is…..well laughable. They have no clue…just alot of money to pretend.

Those two were so cute when they were little, and at the height of their fame… but, now, I think they’re just creepy looking.

They look like tramps who desperately need something to do with their time, so, why not pretend you’re a fashion designer?
