Ashley Olsen Talks Fashion: “Either You Care or You Don’t”

Courtesy Marie Claire

Ashley Olsen has moved seamlessly from child star to star designer, with successful lines Elizabeth and James and The Row under her petite belt, but the way she sees it, she dodged a bullet. Speaking to Marie Claire of her tightly-regimented childhood, she muses, “That’s why I look at Britney, and I’m surprised I didn’t end up like her.” Her saving grace may have been her love of fashion and innate taste level. “I think you’re either born with a sense of style or you’re not,” she tells Marie Claire, which is on newstands August 11. “Either you care or you don’t.” Ashley and her twin, Mary-Kate, “love fashion,” she says. “When we were going to NYU, I think that was the first time we were aware of the power of our personal style. Not the power of it, but the result of it.” The endless press coverage of their every outfit was a surprise at the beginning. “Between the big sunglasses and Starbucks cup and the big sweaters, the hobo-chic thing, we were more shocked than anything,” she says. For the twins, it’s just a natural choice. “Mary-Kate and I are very aware of trends and style, but at the end of the day, we don’t even think twice about it,” she says. “It’s just, ‘What do I feel like wearing today, and how do I want to put it together.’” And for both sisters, they are always willing to take a risk, even if it means destroying a designer piece. “The amount of beautiful things we’ve ruined — not having the patience for a tailor and cutting everything ourselves … My sister once took an Alaïa dress of mine and just cut the whole thing, and then she was like, ‘I cut it too short.’” Ashley has to laugh. “Mary-Kate and I don’t think about fashion as these clean, beautiful objects. We just kind of wear it and live in it.”

Axelle Woussen/Bauer-Griffin

You might not be a rock star, but Miley Cyrus is about to give you the chance to tour like one — at least for a day — and raid her closet while you’re at it. The teen star is partnering up with eBay in an online auction that gives one fan and three of her friends the chance to hit the road with the teen star, and be her “roadie for a day,” going behind-the-scenes at one of her upcoming concerts and hanging out backstage. Miley is also cleaning out her closet and auctioning off some of her favorite outfits — including this Theory dress that she wore to the Bolt premiere last November. All proceeds from the auctions will benefit the Pappy Cyrus Family Foundation, the Cyrus family’s personal charity that was founded last year in honor of her granddad to help kids in need. Bidding starts tomorrow Thursday August 6th and ends August 13th at 7 PM PT. Click here to learn more and get bidding!

VIDEO: Susan Boyle Gets Glam For Harper’s Bazaar

British singing sensation Susan Boyle gets glam for her first major magazine spread for the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar, posing for a high fashion shoot called, appropriately, “Susan Boyle: Unsung Hero”. Laura Brown, Harper’s Bazaar Special Projects Editor, says the theme of the spread was focused on her transformation in the public eye “because she lived 47-years without a spotlight. Then she came out onto the stage and transfixed us all.” On her overnight YouTube fame, Susan says, “It was just overwhelming–to find TV stations camped outside your door and the phone ringing 24 hours a day. It was good. But overwhelming. It was too big for anyone to handle.” The goal was to make the spread feel like real life for Susan, who has enjoyed shopping and changing up her style since becoming a star. Check out Today‘s behind-the-scenes glimpse into Susan’s shoot and pick up the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar, also featuring Leighton Meester on the cover, on newsstands August 18th. Rodarte to Design Line for Target Go International!

Gary Hershorn /Landov

Rodarte, designed by sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, is best known for its breathtaking detail, edgy styling and devoted celeb clientele, like Reese Witherspoon who chose their ethereal gown for this year’s Oscars. And come December, they’ll be known for their affordable collection for Target, according to WWD. The sisters have signed on to design a 55-piece collection for Target’s Go International program to launch on December 20, with prices ranging from $10 for knee-highs to $80 for a leopard-print jacket. So what to expect of the line? “What you’ll notice is an amazing eye for detail,” Joshua Thomas, a Target spokesman, tells WWD. “It’s very feminine, yet very modern. The collection incorporates a rich mix of patterns and fabrications and everything from sequins and bows to faux fur. The key with Rodarte is layering.” And don’t forget those dresses that Natalie Portman and Kirsten Dunst can’t get enough of. Thomas promises “a variety of great holiday dresses. There are stand-alone pieces and pieces that can be worn together to create an ensemble by layering different patterns, textures and prints.” Tell us: Are you excited for Rodarte for Go International at Target to launch?

EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEEK: Nicole Richie’s Maternity Line for A Pea in the Pod

Courtesy of A Pea in the Pod

Nicole Richie is known as known for her boho-chic style as she is for Hollywood pedigree — and with fans like Madonna wearing her House of Harlow 1960 jewelry collection, her design career couldn’t be hotter. Pregnant with her second child (daughter Harlow Winter is 19 months old), the star has signed on to create (and model) a line of maternity clothes with her signature flair for A Pea in the Pod. Richie talked to PEOPLE exclusively about the new line, explaining that the collaboration works because “Pea in the Pod is such a known company for pregnant women. They carry great lines, and so when they asked me to create a line for them, I was really excited and eager to do it.” And being pregnant herself means that Nicole is especially considerate of her customers. “You really feel like you have to change your whole wardrobe. And that’s the last thing a woman wants to go through. So I really tried to make this line to get women excited about wearing clothes.” And while Nicole admits she doesn’t always wear maternity clothes, she definitely thinks the pregnant form should be flaunted! “I think the pregnant body is beautiful, and I think you should show it off,” citing her jean cutoffs as a go-to this pregnancy. As for what to expect in the line, think peasant tops, layering tees, flowing maxidress and braided details. Nicole may have a few months left until she has her second child, but she says of her newest design collection making its debut, “It feels great to see everything come to life. It’s the best feeling in the world to have your visions and dreams coming together. I’m so excited for people to see them. I just hope that people like it.” We give it our thumbs up! “Nicole”, an exclusive collection for A Pea in the Pod stores on Friday, with prices ranging from $48 for tank tops to $148 to maxidresses.

EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: Katharine McPhee Goes Blonde for Her New Album

Ellen von Unwerth

Katharine McPhee is a born brunette, but for the cover shoot for her new album Unbroken, which hits stores October 6, the singer is trading her long brown locks for a sexy platinum shag — and she’s sharing the look exclusively with PEOPLE. “My music is a little more edgy so that inspired me to be adventurous,” she explains of taking the leap to blonde with stylist Peter Savic. “I’ve never dyed my hair before so this was a pretty drastic change. I’ve always been known as a brunette but I’ve been thinking about it for a long time and it kind of just fit with all of the searching with the music and experimenting that I would do the same thing with my look.” And she’s been noticing other effects of the new style as well. “The look has affected the way I dress, it’s inspired me to be more adventurous with what I decide to wear. It’s silly that something so simple as changing your hair could have such a big effect,” she muses. “I’m just having fun with it. This is a great time for me to do something different. I’m young — I always try to have a good time.” Learn more about Katharine’s new look in this week’s PEOPLE magazine, which hits stands today. Tell us: Do you prefer Katherine as a blonde, or do you want her to go back to brunette?
