Madonna’s Makeup Artist’s Secret Weapon: Diamond Dust

Courtesy Shu Uemura

In the ’80s she had a hit singing “Material Girl,” and now the singer’s making good on the nickname with a beauty routine that takes luxe to fierce new levels. For her Sticky & Sweet 2009 tour, Madonna‘s long-time makeup artist, Shu Uemura Artistic Director Gina Brooke, is giving Madonna a true high-wattage sparkle by dusting her eyelids with a mixture of white shadow and flawless, crushed rose-cut diamonds — and accenting the look with another two carats of small diamond pieces affixed to her brow bones, all inspired by the singer’s hit “Ray of Light.” And while diamond dust might seem over-the-top — even for Madonna — the effect is worth it, explains Gina. “The resulting brightness and glow from Madonna’s eyes captivate the audience and reinforces the fact that there are always new possibilities with makeup — and no rules,” she says. Even if you don’t have a few spare carats of diamonds lying around, you can still recreate Madonna’s tour look using slightly less precious commodities, Gina says. Using Kolinsky brush in #15, apply Pressed Eye Shadow ME White 906, blending softly from lash line to brow bone. Using a liner brush, apply Painting Liner in M Black from corner to corner of lash line, sweeping up at the edge. Next, apply a thick false lashes, like Farfallina Lash. Balance the look with a neutral lip using Rouge Unlimited Lipstick in 945 Beige.

Star Stylist Jennifer Rade’s Top Tips on Finding the Right Sunglasses for You!

Ramey

With clients like Angelina Jolie and Kim Kardashian, stylist Jennifer Rade is one of Hollywood’s hottest authorities on glamour so who better to recommend the perfect shades for the summer? Ensconsced in the luxurious SoHo sunglass boutique Ilori, the boutique’s Style Ambassador explained that her belief that “people should put more time into [it] because it’s really the only accessory that covers function and form. Sunglasses are definitely an extension of your personality and of your outfit.” And there are no rules this summer — from bright plastics to classic aviators, it’s all about finding the right fit for your face. Jen suggests “to work in opposites.” So if you have a long, narrow face, find a wider frame that gives width to your face. Or if you have a round face, try a frame that has “a little angle so it helps give the illusion of definition of your jaw line.” But remember to “make sure the lens doesn’t go so far down that it affects the proportion of your jaw.” And neutrals don’t just have to mean tortoise shell or black – “try a pearl grey [or a] camel. There are beautiful lighter-toned plastics that would definitely be considered neutral, and therefore, I think could go with anything so long as it’s appropriate for your outfit personality.” And don’t be afraid to spend a little bit more at a store like Ilori, like Beyonce, who recently went on a shopping spree with her nephew and mother at their Beverly Hills location. “What is cool about sunglasses is that no matter what you buy or when, if you take care of them, you should be able to open a drawer and have all your options.” But her number one piece of advice is to make sure you know what you look like in the glasses by snapping camera phone pics. “You need to shoot yourself five pictures of yourself, [even] ten. Otherwise you can not see [what you look like].” Tell us: What sunglasses are you buying this summer?

Alicia Silverstone’s New Role: EcoTools Designer

Barbara Sullivan

She may have earned fame as a fashion-obsessed teen in Clueless, but these days Alicia Silverstone has become nearly as well known for her activism in environmental causes as for her acting. Now she’s combining her love of Hollywood style and the environment by designing a collection of makeup cases and brushes with EcoTools that fits with her vegan philosophy — and she’s giving PEOPLE.com a first look at her with some of her new designs. Slated to hit stores just in time for the holiday season, the environmentally-friendly bags are printed with her favorite flowers: lavender, rose, chrysanthemum, cosmo and thyme, and all the products, including the makeup brushes, are completely non-toxic. As for why she wanted to lend her design talents to this project, Alicia explains, “With this collection, we wanted to show everyone that you don’t have to sacrifice style to make environmentally-conscious choices. You can use earth-friendly materials and still look fantastic!”
