So many of you make comments about which you know little about. The fitness (swimwear) portion of the pageant is only one of of many. The events which are more like screenings are spread out over a week ending with a televised finals night. This show is condensed down to fit in to a two hour time slot for this reason much of the meat, if you will, of the pageant is missed buy many who are otherwise quick to judge. The weeks event’s leading up o finals are judged by professional judges who, believe it or not must be certified. Unfortunately the final competition is judged by celebrities.
Many of these woman have spent years preparing just to make it to this point. I for one would not put myself through what they do for a 1 in 50 chance.
With everything available to enhance a woman’s “looks” from push up bras to liposuction, what would you suggest they wear for the fitness competition, sweatpants?
I’m not applauding this woman for being in a pageant but lets face it, they are hanging it all out there for all of us to see and be judged, even in a bikini.
Come on, that has to be the hardest part of the competition for them but it’s not the only part.

A bikini or two piece is a women’s swimsuit with two parts, one covering the breasts (optionally in the case of the monokini), the other the groin (and optionally the buttocks), leaving an uncovered area between the two (optionally in the case of the Tankini). The monokini, a bikini variant, is a back formation from bikini, interpreting the first syllable as the Latin prefix bi- meaning “two” or “doubled”, and substituting for it mono- meaning “one”.[2] Jacques Heim called his bikini precursor the Atome, named for its size, and Louis Réard claimed to have “split the Atome” to make it smaller.

The bikini is perhaps the most popular female beachwear around the globe, according to French fashion historian Olivier Saillard due to “the power of women, and not the power of fashion”. As he explains, “The emancipation of swimwear has always been linked to the emancipation of women.”[3] By the mid 2000s bikinis had become a US$811 million business annually, according to the NPD Group, a consumer and retail information company.[4] The bikini has boosted spin-off services like bikini waxing and the sun tanning industries.[5]

I see both sides to the whole pagent issue. On the one hand, these could be potential role modles, they are doing somethine wonderful, and generally most of them are finishing up an education or starting their careers. Which is a good thing for young girls to look up to. That is why they have the “miss congenialty” winner. But the reality is, they also judge on beauty. that is why it is a Beauty Pagent. And it could potentially harm how younger girls view themselves. But I think that is where the parents haven’t given them enough values on how they look at themselves. The parents haven’t taught them to love themselves enough for who they are.

I used to love the pageants when I was a young girl and even into my teenage years. So what that they look good in a bikini or what have you. And just remember that every woman in this world is not a size “0″.

There’s nothing wrong with beauty pageants but I think that they do not choose based on looks which is odd since it’s called a BEAUTY pageant. They always pick not the greatest looking girls in the top three. Then it should be a different competition

One of the things I notice in each of your comments is the use of “simply” or “sole.” Brandi’s whole point is that beauty is not the only thing these girls are judged on. It is ONE of many. If you’ve watched the show, you also know how they talk about keeping healthy, Kris, so it is a part of the competition. You’d also know the women are smart and ambitious.

No one is saying these women need to be your role models, but why can’t they be someone else’s? Since when did being pretty become a negative thing to attack?

I have been reading some of these comments and I have something to say to all those pageant haters! I LOVED being in pageants as a teenager (and, no, my mother did NOT pressure me into it- she HATED them). I also LOVED fishing and playing softball. I just thought it was fun to get all dressed up and be on stage. My PARENTS gave me my values. If anyone out there thinks that pageants are to blame for making kidsor women think LOOKS are SO important, they are dead wrong!! It is a lack of good values being passed down from parents!

Really?? Kris, Tammy and Charm and others. You are complaining about these pageants as a disgrace to women because all they do is judge looks and glamour. You are responding on a People magazine blog!!!! That’s all this magazine is about. Hollywood looks and oh yeah….the hot looking celebs that come crashing down to earth every other day when reality hits them.

I’d venture that most of those girls in this “pageant” have more smarts than LiLo, Paris and all of the silly Hills girls do combined!!

But hey. Lauren Conrad sure knows how to buy the right shoes!!

I love beauty pageants and they have never made me feel less of a woman or even less of a person just because I don’t look like them. This is their career for now and they like it… so what? Plus, those “judges” who see past all the beauty… have you ever watched who those people are? Most are people who have their names in the headlines that month. I wouldn’t trust them! They just want publicity. Anyway, I think if you let it enrage you that this pageant is put on every year, it takes something away from you. You shouldn’t feel threatened, and if you are, that is your fault, not Miss New Jersey.

Let Jessica have her entrepreneurial chance like anyone else. Is she hurting others by cresting a suit? The choice to buy or not is the consumer's. I agree with Brandie, it's not mindless and self degrading. Yes there is a segment that appreciates how a person respects and takes care of themselves, but some of you need to calm down. Besides, no one is forced to do anything here, it's by choice. You don't have to agree, but why all the ranting? There are plenty of very revered, intelligent and talented women that have done very well for themselves. Because they are attractive and might have used that power to get the recognition or first opportunity to succeed that they deserved, makes them someone that brings down an entire sexual lineage? What year is this????? As women why do we continue to be jugded by our faces and body??? What about the REALLY important qualities like brains, talent , how about being jugded on our ability to be career woman as well as mothers, and wives, lovers, and friends…. Time to put all this “BEAUTY CONTEST” and the nonsense that goes along with it in the attic along with the rest of the antiques……

Looking good in a two-piece does NOT prove you are healthy – I see women all the time at the beach smoking cigarettes, eating fatty foods, and drinking soda. Therefore, your statement that wearing a bikini in pageants is for the sole purpose of being judged on one’s health is ridiculous and so predictable.

I say if you got it flaunt it! And, if you don’t like the idea or thought of a pageant whether it be a beauty pageant or not…then DON’T WATCH. But, don’t run your mouths and knock programs that others enjoy.
