Gwyneth Paltrow Shares Her Post-Holiday Diet!

Lionel Cironneau/AP

After giving us her personal holiday recipes, Gwyneth Paltrow shares her post-holiday diet secret in her latest GOOP newsletter. Gwyneth admits, “I need to lose a few pounds of holiday excess. Anyone else? I like to do fasts and detoxes a couple of times during the year, the most hardcore one being the Master Cleanse I did last spring. It was not what you would characterize as pretty. Or easy.” Working with her doctor, a detox diet specialist, Gwyneth has created a seven-day elimantion diet that helps detox the body. “As I do not wish to subsist on lemon water in the middle of winter, I asked my doctor, a detox diet specialist, for the guidelines he uses to achieve a good detox that is not as hallucinogenic (in a bad way) as the Master Cleanse,” says Gwyneth. “What it came down to was this: you can detox easily and effectively while you continue to eat as long as you are cutting out the foods and other substances that interfere with the detoxification process.” While cutting out dairy, grains with gluten, meat, shellfish, anything processed (including all soy products), fatty nuts, nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant), condiments, sugar and obviously no alcohol, caffeine or soda, Gwyneth’s diet consist of salads, fruit smoothies, chicken, soups and lots of water. That’s so lame. The most recent issue of US Magazine quoted Gwyneth as saying that she never diets. Instead, she just increases her work outs. Just goes to show you that Hollywood is full of LIARS!

Liz

Why is everyone obsessed with invented BS like “detoxification”? Our bodies have LIVERS and KIDNEYS for that purpose. We don’t need to eat lemon water or eliminate healthy foods like tomatoes and peppers to “detoxify” our bodies. Celebs are morons and their “doctors” are frauds. UGH!

K

What’s funny about this is her and I are the same height and size (I believe she said she is a size 6 now) and I don’t do any of these crazy things. Why is she detoxing when she eats healthy in the first place? Why is she going to doctors when technically she is too thin for her height in the first place? Celebs belong in the loony bin.

Betty

WOW Liz! You really showed your ignorance with that statement.

Gail

I agree with you Liz!

Courteney

Since when is Gwyneth Paltrows opinion important? Celebrities should keep their opinions private.

Caitlin

Some people have naturally (genetically) sluggish detox systems that don’t work as well as the average person’s. This eventually leads not only to a slowing of the metabolism, but to hormonal imbalances and even brain dysfunction (ADD-like symptoms, irritability and depression, and others). I have definitely had personal experience with this, and I can attest that the kind of “diet” that Gwyneth is describing is amazingly helpful. After following it for a while, you not only lose any unhealthy weight, but your tummy naturally flattens, your muscles naturally tone up somewhat, and you have more energy and mental clarity. It rocks!

Also, even the average person could benefit from this kind of detox diet from time to time– our modern living environment is more polluted with more toxins than ever before in history so even a good detox system can be overwhelmed and need a break.

T.

I’m a nurse and I can testify that anything that causes you to hallucinate due to reduction of caloric intake and or the claim of ‘cleansing’ is NOT healthy. The body is built to run itself and detoxing is a fallacy (colonics, enemas, water/soup diets) that simply shock the body instead of healing it. Good health is as simple as drinking adequate water, eating smart, and making sure you exercise to maintain bone density and muscle health while keeping positive, active, and rested. Why people have to make it so complicated is beyond me- unless well, they want money, in which case feel free to line the pockets of those that create more problems than solutions.

Rozita

Hmmm….my rheumatologist just chastised me for my low dairy intake. He would prefer me to increase my calcium intake through dietary means rather than supplements. So no dairy, eh, Gwyneth? I’m more likely to listen to a doctor who has helped me successfully fight psoriatic arthritis, and who specializes in HEALING PEOPLE than to an actress who specializes in MAKING MOVIES.

Does that make sense to anyone?

Nanette

…and then I stick my finger down my throat and the problem just goes away!

LETZ GO RACINN BOYZ!..

C

Who cares.

kacey

“Detox diet specialist”???….just another con-artist hanging his shingle out, and selling anorexia & bulimia. Paltrow has got to be off her rocker on this one. The list of “forbidden” foods that she’s not to touch is a joke. I’ve got a great solution to keeping weight off at Christmas time…it’s called asking Santa for a good pair of runners, and pushing those plump little snotty-nosed kids of hers.

F

Maybe she should flush out some of her Bullsh*t with lemon juice too!

ro

You know, there are other ways of losing weight but different methods work for different people. While I believe her method is kind of extreme, it’s her body and she’s survived this long. If it works for her, let her do it.
I am personally on weight watchers, drink nothing but water, and work out daily and I lost 100 lbs in about a year. Different method. I know people who’ve tried what I am doing and it didn’t work out too well. It depends on the person.
We can eat WHATEVER or HOWEVER we want…meat, fish, salads, etc…it’s up to the INDIVIDUAL (not a group or critics).

Lyndsay

GO TO THE GYM AND EAT A LITTLE HEALTHIER! NO COOKIES THIS WEEK!

ellie

HATERZ!!!!

Jules

To the person who doesn’t care what celebrities have to say…why are you reading People Magazine on line???? As for detox, yes the body is made to take care of itself when we put good things into it. Over the holidays I ate too much of too many things that aren’t great for me. Detoxing by whatever means works for your individual body can be great. Don’t you starve a cold when you’re sick? Not so crazy afterall.

Cucumber eyes

all i can say is that she’s a goose!

Lisa

Not that it really matters, but I think the phrase goes: “Starve a fever, feed a cold”

Mer

This is so stupid and dangerous. There is no such thing as detoxification of the body. The only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you take in!

Kim

I think I’d rather just be fat. Yay!

DThomas

Does anyone actually keep this stuff in their homes?? I love to cook, but some of this stuff sounds icky….

Marianne

Have none of you guys read any of the literature? I am 28 years old and the cases of ADHD and Autism has increased out of control in just three decades! Don’t you think there is a correlation between the processed crap we put in our bodies and these “diseases”?
Furthermore, the WHO released this past year that our generation will be the first to NOT live longer than our parents if we continue to degrade our health! Look at the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes!!!

I think its GREAT to promote healthy eating! What this is showing is that we can fill our bodies with goodness and be healthy doing so. A detox diet is a week for a reason – its not meant to be on forever.

I dare you to try it! It is one of the best feeling things in the world to stop our addictions to processed sugars, fats and carbs!

Gwyneth Paltrow Rings In 2009 with Extreme Dieting

[...] Gwyneth Paltrow Rings In 2009 with Extreme Dieting Gwyneth Paltrow’s most recent issue of her ridiculous GOOP newsletter told us all about her post-holiday weight loss plans, which are just as practical as her initial recommendations of “Read something beautiful” and “Don’t be lazy.” Instead of her usual diet of choice, the Master Cleanse, she’s recommended something almost as painful from her “detox diet specialist”: [...]

C

umm probably because it’s entertaining.

kim

liz is TOTALLY correct, detox diets are a fraud!

if you want to get as much of the junk out of your body as possible, drink lots of water!! more than 64 ounces; and if you’re overweight you have to drink more (sorry, cant remember the number of ounces right now) per excess pounds above a healthy weight for your height.

and. like liz said—-let your liver and kidneys do their job!

Candy

I just had to write that I don’t care what Gwynnie does to detoxify her system. Why does she think people care about all the pretentious things she does? She obviously doesn’t write her blog for her everyday fans. That $130 box of chocolate as a holiday gift sealed the notion for me.

LA Girl

She should stick to what she knows about making boring and bad films; not give out medical advise to the public. What works for one does not work for all. I suggest if you want to cleanse and purify your body of chemical toxins see your doctor or nutritionist and not rely on a Hollywood dim bulb for answers.

It’s kind of like asking Madonna for sexual advise.

leigh

she does not even have an ounce of fat on her body. & her “holiday excess” weight is probably from a second helping of steamed broccoli that she had & now thinks she “fat” because of it. starving yourself for a week is not a “detox”. you will end up unhealthier after you’re done than you were when you started. if you want to lose weight eat more fruit and veggies, go easy on the carbs, & go for a walk, clib some stairs, run around your block, go to the gym, just get up and move around. its not rocket science.

kacey

….and she must have issues with food, since she named her kid Apple. Too ironic for words

Holly

It sounds like not very many of you have done any real research. If you think that what we eat in America is so great, then why do we have so many health issues and are the biggest on the planet. Fasting is from biblical times and actual does serve a purpose if done correctly and safely.
Check out Weston A. Price foundation for more information on how eating junk food is really killing us all.
Also check out Dr. Mehmet Oz when they were on the Oprah show and talked about why there are people who live to be 100. It’s because they don’t eat high fructose corn syrup, saccharin, sugar substitutes and the list goes on.
There are also very compelling studies that show that since we are the 3rd generation on these types of sweeteners, and other unstable substances, to that prove infertility could be a result of all of this stuff. Detox what? All of the lousy sweeteners and other crap people eat. By the way, vegan is not necessarily the way to go either, those who think soy is soooo good for you should do a little more research for themselves, soy isn’t call a growth inhibitor for nothing.
Check out holistic food diets, meaning meal plans, not reducing calore intake. Whole foods people!

Jon

This should be interesting.

Eileen

You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables (over juices), eat protein with limited fat, stick to fish and chicken, and limit beef and pork. Never eat anything processed like hot dogs, baloney or chicken roll, they are full of chemicals. I am allergic to dairy so I use soy milk and it taste just as good as the real stuff, but less fattening and more protein. I had to work with a nutritionist to work out some of my allergy issues with food and this works best for me. The more you take in the more you need to burn off through exercise. If I have a piece of soy cheesecake for Christmas dessert, I need to run on my treadmill for about 20 minutes more to burn it off. Or come up with alternative healthier dessert. Take fresh strawberries or peaches and blend them in your food processor, add a little apple or orange juice and freeze it, my version of sorbet and its delicious. You don’t need to follow an anorexic self involved pampered princess like Gwyneth Paltrow, who’s daily reality is nothing close to what most people’s lives are like. She can paid thousand a day for a personal Trainer to torture and taunt her into a size 0, which generally is considered by most doctors to be an unhealthy for anyone, yet more women strive to get to a size 0, 2 or 4, which leads to some every unhealthy weight. TV adds 10 lbs because to the curvature of the lens, I cannot image how thin she looks in person.

Trisha

I agree with Liz too! Just eat sensible and healthy and you don’t need to detox. Maybe do a healthy whey protein smoothie one night for dinner and don’t eat white stuff!

Jen Adams

HHHHMMMM Facinating. Here’s one. A hundred years ago anyone who fit the “standard for beauty and the desired body or face” used to say it was “GOD Given” or simply a product of nature. Now that attractivness can be bought to the ‘nth degree, everyone has an angle of how “You too can accuire MY hottness factor 12…heres how” It benefits both the ego of the one selling, i.e. “I worked really hard to look like this!” arrogance as well as the potential monetary value of selling a yet another body perfecting product to the gullible public, and profiting from it financially.

Jen Adams

AND PLEASE GOD someone help Joaquin Phoenix. If he dies and the last film he ever makes was with Paltrow…I don’t know. I think it may kill me. Hang on Joaquin, I’ve lived for years in darker places than you even want to imagine, just hang on. PLEASE

Straight Cash Homey

Or you can be naturally skinny

Straight Cash Homey

My point above being that she is tall and thin. Drinking soup and eating chicken my drop 5lbs. On her it is huge but the average person it doesn’t make a difference. She should stick to hair tips and leave the diet advice to others.

chrislewismh

Why detox when we have livers and kidneys for that purpose? Because our bodies are constantly inundated with far more toxins than they were designed to process (or did God welcome Adam to the world by handing him a can of bug spray to put on his food before popping it into a microwave and driving across the garden in his SUV?) We cleanse for the same reason that we bathe, because we get dirty faster than our skin cells naturally slough off. If you don’t believe cleansing is necessary, then please explain the epidemic numbers of kidney and liver disease that come from bombarding those organs with more filth than they were built to handle. I certainly agree with doing away with fads and hype and advocate a sane, knowledgeable approach to cleansing that comes from study and experience, but I hope I won’t find myself standing in a line next to you when you decide to apply the same logic to bathing as you have to cleansing.

Chris Lewis, MH (Master Herbalist)

She is so skinny I wonder why she diets…
Only thing goood is cutting doen sweets and avoinding caries
Si es reflaca, ¿para qué la dieta?
Lo bueno es cortar los dulkces y evitar así las caries y el dentista

This Liz gal is right… Kidneys and livers remove toxins just fine. This detox and “cleanse” systems are just marketing gimmicks. They’re just disgusting ways to make you crap a lot, making it harder for your body to absorb what nutrients you’re putting in, which in her case it doesn’t sound like much.

Your body needs nutrients and vitamins from varying sources. Deprive your body of these for the sake of weight loss and your body will start tearing down it’s own tissue to get them…and not just fat…bone, muscle etc…all get eaten away…

If you want to lose weight there’s a very simple and cheap algorithm, and here it is:

calories out>calories in

Stick to that algorithm and you’ll lose weight…eat sensibly, exercise regularly…you’ll feel better.

Elda

Drink rm temp. water while eating your meals, cold drinks just makes food sit in your belly longer spreading all that fat!! or better yet, nuke a cup of water for a min. or so after eating.

thedailycrazy

i.e. if you don’t ingest toxins, you will detox. Not eating things that are bad for you will surely allow your body to ‘detox’ itself. Healthy New Year to you all!

Plus a tip on how to get fit AND catch fish at the same time on http://thedailycrazy.wordpress.com – it should be everybody’s New Year’s resolution!

L

Hey, must be easy to make salad dressing when you have a chef cooking for you.

I’ll just lose the 3 pounds I gained over the holidays the old-fashioned way…eating a little less and going to the gym. Might take me a couple weeks but it’s a lot less painful than this disgusting detox crap. And I can still eat chocolate on my kind of diet.

pitafortwo

you still have to like what ever you are eating in order to have continued success with a meal plan.

A cleanse is great if you become addicted to fast food, sugary, or sweet foods. A two week cleanse will reset your palate. I went on one for 2 days after the holidays because I ate so much my back hurt and I was all clogged up. Beyond this, however, they really aren’t that healthy or useful.

neurotype

Better idea: don’t overeat in the first place! Seven course meals confuse and disgust me.

i would really like to have my mom to lose weight and she would like to lose weight and for her in the future she would like to look good and she is 44 years old

All of you with the negative comments and personal attacks on Gweneth need to get a life.

She shares what works for her, and she has not attested to the fact that her health habits are suitable for everyone. Everyone has the right to share their opinion and if you do not value hers then saying you disagree will suffice.

Lose the negativity and stop being haters.

Happy New Year :)

Rebecca

I’m actually on this detox diet (3rd day) and while the preparation of the food and the grocery shopping for it were sort of exhausting (mainly b/c , I’d never bought a lot of the foods, i.e., “mirin” or “bonito flakes”) I am really loving it. Despite the fact that it is relatively low in calories, you get your protein from the shakes and 2 servings each of fish and chicken. I’ve also been feeling better at all of my workouts too. I recommend it. And after showing it to my trainer, she thinks, that for 7 days, its a great idea, as well.

Sue

I get the whole diet thing but how about a little more information on how much exercise GP puts in during a day? A lot more than the rest of us I am sure and good for her. I had to find a way to keep moving through the day and to do that I use a treadmill desk.

My favorite recipes for detox diets.

Very nice.

Lyle

we are to believe that they don’t diet?? how dumb do they thing we are?
