Gwyneth Paltrow Shares Her Top Picks for Holiday Gifts

PA Photos /Landov

In this week’s installment of her newsletter Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow muses on the the spirit of the season and shares her favorite gift-giving secrets. “What is holiday spirit? For me, it means helping to create that atmosphere where loved ones feel full of cheer, like some happy secret is about to be revealed,” she says. “Holiday spirit is a feeling of warmth, of togetherness, of connectedness. We get that by giving. We get it by watching cheeks flush with color when something opened and in the hands conveys a message: I know you, I get you, I see you.” Her top gift choices to show she cares include the Flip Ultra Camcorder, ($149) — which is also one of PEOPLE.com’s choices in our Star Favorites: The Chicest Gifts. “This thing is genius,” she says. (We agree!) Gwyneth also loves Chris Bolton Jewelry Tag necklaces ($150) imprinted with a loved one’s name. “I personalized mine and I wear it everyday,” she writes. And while the star has been known for sticking to a macrobiotic diet, she lets us in on one of her favorite indulgences: Bridgewater Chocolates ($110), which are “My absolute favorite chocolate in the entire world. I send these out to special people every year.” Want more of her holiday favorites? Click here to read her full list. How nice for her that Gwyneth can spend $110 for chocolate!

Saleema

Judging from the way her collarbone is jutting out in that photo, she could use a few more pieces of chocolate!!

nathalie

I dont see her collarbone anywhere?

Ber

That’s not her collarbone you nickenpoo…it’s a strand of hair!

blue

How nice. During a holiday season when every other lifestyle guru I can think of is encouraging people to give from the heart instead of the wallet and economize this year, Gwen demonstrates how out of touch she really is. $110 chocolates? That’s the holiday spirit?

Apul

Oh poo! No need to hate on Gwyn. Her Goop emails are great and I can’t think of a single reason she would have to gain by sharing her thoughts for living a happy, healthy life, which is what she does (healthy recipes from her kitchen, advice from her doctors on improving your sleep & health, keeping up to date on culture and art). She’s not selling anything. She just wants others to enjoy her secrets of being a bon vivant. Don’t you have anything better to complain about?

adroc27

Wow.. She’s got to be kidding! I’m sure $110 is NOTHING to her, but half of a car payment for most of us..

Ria

Seriously? Well thanks for good ole’ Gwen b/c I now know what the holidays mean. She should just go back to London and stay there. Thank God I don’t have to spend the holidays with her. How wonderful she spends %110.00 on candy when a child may not get a gift because his/her parents can’t afford it or have to rely on the kindness of strangers….what a joke she is…

Nachosmom

Who cares what her picks are? Soooo overrated and dresses like a freak. Did you see her Molly Maid outfit? What a disaster. She thinks she knows fashion (and everything else) and quite clearly, she does not. No thanks for the advice.

blue

Aoul, you can’t think of a single reason? Seriously? How about this: she’s realized that most of the world sees her as sour and out of touch, and she’s trying to show what a good person she really is. Think about it for a minute. She thinks she’s being really nice by giving us all advice on how to have a fabulous life like hers. Yuck. Don’t buy into it.

Basi

Unbelievable…

Cranky

Ugh. I don’t like her. She has this look on her face like she’s smelling something slightly unpleasant.

She’s completely clueless as well. Nattering on about $110 chocolates while the news lately has just been filled with layoffs, economic collapse, etc. etc. SHUT UP Gwynnie.

Don’t know how someone as awesome as Blythe Danner has such an icky daughter.

LOL

Is this woman relavant? Has she ever been?

Lily

Come on you guys, is only 110 dollars for chocolate or 110 boxes of mac N cheese , or maybe about 50 liters of milk, If i only give my humble advice to Gwyneth is why n ot instead of buying the chocolate just buy a gift or two or three for some prefect stranger?

Alicia

Why is everybody hating on Gwyneth for buying chocolate that cost $110.00; so what!!! it’s her money and she is rich, that is pocket change to her. When you are a millionare you live and buy differently from average working class people. Get a life and stop criticizing her for offering up her opinion for gift choices.

Regina

These posts are HIGHlarious! I agree with all the Gwyn haters. What a self absorbed moron! She spends $110 on chocolates and her kids look homeless; and her husband has brown teeth! Gross…

bear

$110 chocolate? How insensitive! And shame on People Magazine for even publishing this – what an insult to your readers who are worried about losing their jobs and paying their mortgages right now! Happy Holidays Gwenyth!

Megan

Jealous, jealous, jealous. It’s a gossip mag, people, not a philanthropy digest. GP has earned her money, and she can spend it in any manner she likes. She and her husband do more for charity than most of us will ever dream of. Merry Christmas, grinches!!

JNelson

Jeesh! Give her a break! She is a real person like anyone else and you don’t have to run out and buy what she does…those of you who say you don’t care about what she recommends should check yourselves, why did you click on the link then???
It’s just her opinion…don’t buy $110 chocolates if it isn’t in your budget, but don’t begrude her because she can! Don’t sound so bitter!

Cranky

No. She’s had too many breaks already and it’s made her the self-absorbed twit that she is.

Michele

Seriously, does she really give out the book “Modern Manners” (4th one down on her complete list????

jennifer

I agree, how nice that Gwenyth can spend $110.00 on chocolates..,how nice it must be to have so much $you can spend it on expensive chocolates….

LOL

Megan – list what she does for charity! Her biggest recipient is her over-inflated ego.

LOL

JNelson – we are not bitter, just realistic and critical and unwilling to buy into self-absorbed advice from an over-rated twit who has nothing better to do with her time than develop useless lists. If you choose to buy this line of advice from a bobblehead, go ahead. But don’t ask us to follow blindly as you do.

soccermom

well i am glad she has the money to spend on ridicoulous gifts like over 100 dollars for choclate-unlike celebs your average person is being affected by the recession and do not have this kind of money-people magazine needs to focus on real people for once

LOL

Alicia – just as he offers her opinion, so too are we. So get used to free speech. Gwyneth is not a Queen or the Pope, this is a democracy where people speak out when they see something stupid like advice from a lemon-lipped twit!

Cranky

lemon lipped twit! Love it!

ssckatt

I am going to give chocolates for Christmas myself: storebrand chocolate chips for homemade dozens of cookies, cost: about $10; Snickers bars for stocking stuffers, about $5; homemade chocolate fudge, about $15. Then with the remaining $80 of the $110, I will try to get as many gifts as I can squeeze out of it for my children. Get it Gwynnie

Angela

Quit harping on her. If she wants to spend $110 on chocolates, let her. She’s helping the economy.

Nicole

What an idiot – she knows who this stuff goes to, not a bunch of people who can give someone $110 chocolates. Way to fail at being relevant, Fishsticks!

elizabeth

that $110 chocolate is misrepresented. if you go on bridgewater website. you can clearly see the prices vary in all forms. most being around 30-35. definately not unreasonable. its price point no different than buying from godiva (my personal favourite) or lindt. i am sure the 110 are for the very large gift baskets. something i myself might buy someone as a special gift. actually i normally do 50.00. thats a lot of chocolate! that being said i think the harsh comments on ms. paltrow are a bit harsh and laid with a bit of envy and jealousy.

while some people are losing their jobs and homes, some are not. some just dont and will never make that kind of money because they opted to not go to college or their choice in career.

many of the people who bought those homes and got those type of morgages have no one else to blame but themselves. they knew the very high risk. but they wanted homes they could not really afford and the people suggesting they use those mortgages. they are the ones that are to blame. they tried to give me one of those and i said no way-i shall take the 30 year fixed rate traditional mortgage thank you very much! i still have my home!

on a side note-i wouldnt eat that snickers kind of candy with all that horrible processed food. thats why s many kids are sick and overweight–its all the processing. spend a little extra and get the healthier organic kind thats not processed.–it even tastes better!!

Sus

Hey now, Bridgewater Chocolate is just down the road a bit from me and it is a local, small, USA company. When you go there you can watch the skilled people at work. It’s very cool. She’s putting food on their table this Christmas.
Now how about that plastic contraption you bought at Wal-mart? Who’s getting those profits?

Catherine

I have NEVER posted a response to anything online but after reading these responses I felt compelled to do so. Why is there so much wealth envy going on here? Why does it bother people so much that someone may have more than they do? I love the poster who wrote she’s (Gwyenth) had enough breaks in her life…so she should not be able to spend any of her hard earned money because she has a famous Mom and Dad? Maybe she comes from money, but she could be doing nothing with her life, like bar hopping and snorting drugs. If she wants to spend money and she has it to spend why be so mean and envious? I say good for Gwyneth! To all you wealth envy Gwyneth haters maybe you should spend less time posting nasty comments on the Internet and more time getting an education and working your buns off so you can go buy yourself – or someone else – something nice. I may spend a ton of money on myself and others, but my husband and I give a ton to charity as well, as I have read Gwyneth does. Lighten up people and stop being so bitter, it is very unattractive!

MIchele

HELLO!!!! Did anyone click on the link and see that the $110 chocolate is a gift tower?!!! It’s up there with the costs of regular gourmet chocolate shop gift collections. The individual chocolate is reasonably priced. Why is $110 for a gift collection of chocolate to someone who loves chocolate any more or less crazy than the parent on welfare who stands in line at walmart to stomp someone to death for a discount on a tv, video game or duvet?!!! All of the items in Miss Paltrow’s list were reasonably priced for a single nice gift for someone. Rather than get someone $200 of misc crap they don’t care about…get them one gift tower of chocolate for $110.

The hatred on this site for someone that no one knows personally is sad. There is such better focus for everyone’s energy.

katielynne

Here, Here!! Catherine! What you said! But then again, if this is how these folks let off their steam, maybe its less harmful than a lot of other ways. Hope Gwyneth doesn’t take any of the negative comments to heart. She’s got more class than all of them collectively. Merry Christmas Gwyneth, and to everyone else!!

brenna

WOW. thanks Gwenyth. Guess what. I am unemployed this xmas. will you buy me a box of 110.00 chocolates, bc I cant even afford hershey kisses. Instaed of givng gift advie, give some to charity, people are starving.

Joanne

Gwenyth Paltrow is a fabulous human being: talented, beautiful and a great role model. I admire how she protects her family and presents herself publically. I’m sure her dad is smiling at her from heaven.

Jon

Interesting.

KMP

This is truly hilarious. In these tough times, we don’t get to laugh as often as many of us would like. Personally, I

Karen

What nice gift ideas! I think Gwyneth is a class act!

I do think the $110 for chocolates is a bit over the top, though. Instead of those, I would recommend the Trader Joe’s Double Chocolate Covered Peppermint Joe Joes. I think they’re about $4.00 for a box and my god are they good!

KMP

Seriously, Elizabeth, are the harsh comments on Ms. Paltrow a bit harsh? Have you no thesaurus? Ms. Paltrow, seems to fancy herself a sort of lifestyle guru in the tradition of the likes of Oprah and Martha Stewart, both of whom have taken pains this year, in light of the all-encompassing financial crisis, to make gift suggestions that are affordable if not free. The fact that you would say that the financial crisis was caused by, and extends merely to those who, “wanted homes they could not really afford,” shows that you and Ms. Paltrow are equally out of touch.

I’m surprised to see that people on this forum have chosen to fixate on chocolates as an example, when Ms. Paltrow’s entire website is littered with absurdly unaffordable items and condescending allusions to lifestyle choices that are only available to the very rich. The Balenciaga coin purse, or the “Hermes Womens Cape Cod Watch ($1,850) The ultimate anti-credit crunch present,” are excellent examples. For whom, exactly, has this website been developed?

What I would love to know is, when did Ms. Paltrow’s eating and buying habits become of interest to anyone besides her cooks and the people from whom she purchases things (most of whom are probably also her sponsors)? Who asked her? Seriously, where do celebrities get the idea that they have the right to inundate us with their extravagant tastes and preferences?

What prevents Ms. Paltrow from sinking to the level of the everyday person and advocating the purchase of certain items from Target or Kmart, or from pairing affordable clothing with affordable shoes? (Check the site, the most hilarious part is the Top Shop dress paired with the Christian Laboutin shoes. You know, to make it an affordable outfit).

ds

Holy Cow! What a bunch of Puddle Glums. Gwyneth can only speak from her station in life. She has been blessed with wealth, but those gifts are not so extragavant given her lifestyle. BTW, that list is “her favorite” stuff. She is not insisting you go out and buy those gifts. Ever watch Oprah? She loads up on expensive gift ideas too. Pull up on the hate. Merry Christmas!

Bren

Good grief, you bunch of sour apples! Where do you expect the rich and famous to shop — Walmart??? If you read that Gwyneth was handing out dollar soaps and hand towels to friends and family for Christmas, you’d make fun of her for being cheap when she can afford better gifts. There’s no pleasing you.

Amused

Hahahah, all the vitriol is hilarious… why read a CELEBRITY tabloid if you don’t want to hear about extravagant purchases? The world is truly filled with miserable and envious people.

Megan

LOL: Act Green, American Cancer Society, Environmental Media Association, Food Bank for New York City, Hoping Foundation, Keep a Child Alive, Prince’s Trust, White Ribbon Alliance, as well as substantial donations to Robin Hood Foundation, UNICEF, Key to the Cure Foundation, various African AIDS charities. Oh, and there’s also the small matter of her husband’s work with Amnesty International, Make Trade Fair, Mercy Corps, Oxfam, Peace One Day, War Child, etc.

Your envy is palpable. Very easy to be an armchair quarterback.

lickety split

anyone know where she gets the sticks that are always up her ass? i’m hoping this is the year she gets them removed, and we can be done with her smug mug.

sue

sooo cant get over that ticketola look

Katherine

I sense a lot of jealousy regarding Gwyenth. Bottom line is she’s rich (aren’t all celebrities?)…therefore she can afford the chocolate. She’s not telling you to go out and buy it. She’s merely saying what she likes. I don’t have that kind of money and neither do most people – so what? Deal with it.

adriene

Did any of you actually go the Bridgewater web site? I bet you didn’t because if you had you would know that apart from the $110 set there are also very reasonably priced sets that go for as low as $18. The set she gets is a gift assortment that includes a massive amount of choclates. Be informed befor you judge people so harshly. There are sets upwards of $160 which she idn’t purchase.
You know what they say about assuming…..

H

Ah the poor lamb, all she wants to do is raise her profile so no one forgets her. It’s not her fault that it never occurred to her that adopting such a patronising tone when writing her missives to enlighten the unwashed masses might not garner her the response she wished for. Perhaps she felt that ‘let them eat cake’ was too succinct?

Pickles

I don’t understand why everyone gets on this website and complains about celebrities and their money. It is a celebrity site. Yes? I like reading about this stuff, it’s just fun fluff.

Maybe you should be looking for jobs and not reading about the lifestyle you can’t afford. Why are you huffing and puffing on a celebrity site if the economy is affecting you? Go complain to the goverment.

And if you are so broke stop paying your $40 internet bill and sell your computer to feed your own family, don’t complain that Gwyneth Paltrow should have to buy you things.

Its that sort of entitlement that got all of you in this position in the first place…Me me me, I deserve lots of things for no work and I’m going to buy a big house that I can’t afford and load up on credit card debt.

Cranky

Puleez. Her website is ridiculous, she is ridiculous. She has an overinflated sense of her own importance and is too dumb to know just how easy she’s had it and too ungrateful to appreciate it. Do I envy her, no. I think she’s a nitwit. Would I like her money..sure, who wouldn’t.

Do I normally dislike celebrities so much, no (I even like some actresses like Jennifer Garner or Cate Blanchett) but there is just something so hollow/entitled and just plain icky about Gwyneth. Sorry, truth hurts.

KMP

Pickles, (nice name) I like reading about this stuff too! I think that egomaniacal and out-of-touch celebrities are hilarious, and infuriating, and fun to criticize. But how criticizing obnoxious celebrities somehow suggests that a person is unemployed or unable to feed her family, or that finding oneself in either of those predicaments somehow denotes irresponsibility or laziness is extremely puzzling.

firedward

I don’t even know why we are infatuated with celebrities who obviously have no idea what life is in the real worl (most of them that is).

Mary

I definitely agree with Elizabeth about the idiotic posters on this forum. Instead of wasting time criticizing celebrities for their buying habits, they ought to put more energy and time in finding a job (or a better one) and/or improving their education/skills. If you are financially struggling, the person who has the most blame is yourself. I have no sympathy for the whiners on this forum. This is a CELEBRITY FASHION forum, for goodness sake.

Candy

Is she in touch with reality? Who is she writing this blog for because it’s not for the average Joe. Maybe she should make Goop exclusive to people just like her. She’s trying to come across as ‘normal and everyday’ but I haven’t seen any of that in any of her posts. This last one is too much.

Cranky

Wow that’s pretty ignorant on your part Mary. Even though I am not financially struggling, I can certainly empathize with people who are.

In your world, the family facing a health crisis or the single mother who is struggling because her husband just left her or died has only herself to blame. How about the person in the slums in India, have they only themselves to blame.

Speak truth about an overpaid, annoying celebrity and you call that whining. Interesting set of values you have there. Ugh, no wonder you like Gwynnie.

Candy

Woah there Mary. You sure do see life through a box. You seem to not know that even the middle class are suffering right now. How about the folks in the Hamptons who can’t sell their houses? There’s about 1% of people in America that can afford to spead money like Gwen. She puts out this blog knowing quite well that the foreclosure rates are at the highest level it’s ever been in decades and those who do still have their houses are struggling. I own my own business. I’ve been an entrepeneur for over 25 years and I’m hurting because everyone else is. To blame people’s financial woes on being uneducated is just dumb. Things happen. My husband died in a car accident 8 years ago and left me with two children but I’ve never been on welfare and that’s a blessing from God. How about some compassion and empathy for your fellow human beings who haven’t been as blessed? You and Gwen need to get your heads out of the clouds.

Mary

Cranky, all of those scenarios are avoidable or at the very least can be alleviated by those who are in them.

While I do sympathize with people’s suffering in general, I do not sympathize with people who complain about “overpaid” celebrities. They are just people who make more (and by more, I mean a LOT more) and thus are able to spend more. And this is a blog about celebrities, what they wear and what they buy. It’s fluff, but it’s fun. If you don’t like it, then DON’T READ IT. Why complain about what you can’t afford when you can be doing something else to improve your own fortunes?

Also, hoarding your money in these times is just about the worst thing you can do. The economy needs stimulation–if you’ve got money, spend it (but within your means).

sue

Stuck up cow, why don’t she and her religous nut of a husband just stop insulting our eyes with there horrible faces and noises.

Cari

I think Gywneth is beautiful. However, if I were the recipient of a box of her $110 chocolates, I would probably sell them to anyone who would pay me the money just because they came from Gwyneth. Doesn’t take much thought to order boxes of expensive chocolates for her friends. If I had Gwyneth’s money, I would be more thoughtful in gift giving.

Sarah

You guys should all stop being so mean to Gwyneth. Not everyone is as poor as you guys are, and SOME people actually CAN afford $110 chocolates. And it’s the holiday season, so it’s obviously a little luxury. And all you people that are hating on Gwyneth, I happen to think that she has a great sense of style and she’s really smart too. Okay, so she named her kid Apple. That doesn’t mean anything! None of you guys are like 6 feet tall and pretty and blonde and skinny.

elizabeth

to kmp: instead of judging people perhaps you might find a better job or get an education and you too might be able to afford the things you are so jealous of. we are not out of touch. i work hard for my money and if i want to buy a 2,000 watch or a 3,000 chanel purse i will (and certainly have!) i do a lot for charity. i have raised millions of dollars for non-profits. and i absolutely give myself. that being said, i am not responsible to support other people. i am entitled to spend the money i earn anyway i see fit. and so does gwen and anyone else who makes money. there are PLENTY of people who can easily afford 110 for chocolate (personally i would get sick from all that chocolate) so get over jealousy and head back to college!

and great job for some of you non haters!! jealousy is very ugly.
