How Do You Save Money On Holiday Shopping?

Neil Beckerman/Getty

We have a love-hate relationship with holiday shopping. With its crowds, chaos and festive music on repeat, our favorite pastime suddenly isn’t so much fun. When we think of all of the people on our gift list, we wish our wallets were bottomless. That’s when we put on our creative hats and seek out sales, visit outlets and even make gifts ourselves. One of our favorite homemade presents is hand painting cocktail glasses with funky designs and filling them with chocolates and candies. Now the editors at StyleWatch want to hear your ideas. Tell us: How do you save money on gift-giving during the holidays? –By Archana Ram

I no longer give gifts to my family and close friends. Rather, I give experiences. I have found that giving someone a ticket to see a performance (symphony, play, musical, etc) or taking them to nice restaurant is a lot more memorable and appreciated than buying them a physical object that they will probably never use and just collect dust somewhere. Of course, it helps greatly that I can afford to give said experiences (tickets and dinner aren’t cheap), but in the end, it’s always worth it.

honestly? i do compare prices and stuff, but i realy don’t worry about saving money during the holidays. it’s one of the times of year when i want to show people that i love them, and i would go into debt for that if necessary. not that material things are everything, but it is definitely nice to be able to give someone a nice gift.

i log on to shopbop.com- they have great holiday gifts that are on trend and won’t break the bank! so far- i have stocked up on love quotes scraves (for mom and aunts), helen ficalora charms (my bffs), and splurged on the current/elliott boyfriend jeans for me!

I shop on Overstock.com. They have great deals on everything and garuntee the lowest price on the items they sell. Also those tv shopping channels (think QVC) surprisingly have some great stuff. They also pick one item to put on special value everyday for a really great price. (You can shop on thier websites too, so you don’t have to watch the channel.) If you plan ahead, you can save a lot this way.

I score online sales at macys.com and boutiquemix.com – my two favorites. This year, I’m making my own gifts.

I create a budget spreadsheet, which lists the amount I am willing to spend and how much I have spent on each person. I don’t do anything extravagant and I start shopping early so I don’t have to pay a premium for last minute shopping.
