Tom Ford’s Surprising Fragrance Model: Erykah Badu!

courtesy Tom Ford

If you’re anything like us, thoughts of patchouli more likely conure up images of the Grateful Dead than red carpet elegance. But for his latest fragrance, White Patchouli, designer-extraordinaire Tom Ford wants to challenge all your preconceived notions about one of fragrance’s most maligned notes. And not stopping at challenging just our noses, Ford puts his iconic spin on one of music’s most eccentric singers — Grammy winner Erykah Badu, who is insanely glamorous in the black and white ads. As fans of Tom Ford’s past fragrances, we can’t wait to try out his next scent when it launches in September. Tell us: What do you think of the design house’s choice of Erykah as the face of their fragrance? Will you consider wearing a patchouli-based scent?

That was a very risky chance to try to glam BOTH patchouilli and erykah badu up…..hope it pays off, i’d take a wiff of the scent

i think is great… finally star with cover… not one of those stars who are famous for nothing… she looks great and has great voice, talent and she’s worked hard to become famous… so i think she’s great choice…

Roxine

I loved Pachouli in the 60’s and I can’t wait to smell the updated version and the ad is fabulous.

Rashida

I think that she looks beautiful and I am thrilled to see a beatiful Aftican American woman a spokesperson for the Frangrance! I’d buy it!

Stan

Beautiful cover and I can’t wait to try the fragrance! Bravo!!!

Erykah Badu may be eccentric, but given how she looks, how she carries herself, etc. it most definitely is NOT a risk to “glamorize her up”. In my opinion, she has always had an “other-worldly” kind of glamour. And I agree with Rashida…it is nice to see a black woman as the spokesperson for a major designer’s fragrance.

Mary

I love Erykah and I love Patchouli! Can’t wait!

Shaneequa

Not a big fan of perfumes (I’m allergic to most) but I am a fan of some of Badu’s music. However, it is the ad that I find absolutely arresting. The lighting, the positioning, just the whole shot is AMAZING. And the juxtaposition of the black and white shot to the idea of the black star/White Patchouli bottle. Great ad.

This was definitely risky but well worth it. Erykah looks absolutely gorgeous.
