Nicole Richie's Next Project: Maternity Wear Designer

04/02/2008 at 01:49 PM ET

With stints as a reality TV star, novelist, jewelry designer and now new mom under her always-fashionable belt — and rumors of a children’s line and signature fragrance in the works — what other ventures could Nicole Richie possibly undertake? At a recent Balenciaga party in L.A., Richie dished about her next project: a maternity line. The style maven told WWD that the design house’s creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere is the main inspiration behind the fashion-forward line. “I wore so much Balenciaga during my pregnancy,” she reveals, including the brand’s motorcycle leggings and scarves. Boyfriend Joel Madden‘s shirts also made it into her pregnancy wardrobe. “When my shirts got too short, I wore Joel’s with a jacket on top,” she says. And her nine months spent carrying baby Harlow Winter can’t help but have taught her exactly what she wants in her own collection, which will feature designs for every stage from early-days to almost-due. “My line will be about making women look and feel good at a really emotional time. It’s about showing your best self, not your tired, worn-down self,” the seemingly inexhaustible mom reveals.

Is this line going to be affordable for all??

Finally! Someone who understands how limited and unfashionable current maternity clothes are! hopefully she uses a bit of rock and roll style inspired by Joel. I also hope these clothes are priced to appeal to middle class citizens. Man, this girl has really turned tings around. You go Nicole!

Heather on

I think it’s a great idea and would love to see (and maybe wear) her designs some day.

AJ on

i loverr nicole!
AND her post baby body!

Mo on

Good for Nicole. She is so positive and beautiful. I’m sure her line will be great, she is so hip even her name for the baby is unique and fun.

erin on

I hope its affordable…how about pants – hopefully she’ll make them in LONGs…tall people have babies too!

claudia on

another celebrity turning in to a designer??

MB on

I’m glad to see all positive comments about Nicole and her future clothing line! Rock on Nicole! I agree with the hope that they are affordable like SJP’s Bitten line…maybe. If I have anymore children, I would love to wear what she designs.

I have a question for Nicole. Are these designer outfits for maternity clothes going to be priced for even those that are at the poverty level or is it just going to be for the rich and famous? Sorry, but another question. Are you also going to consider making sizes for plus size woman? I have a friend who is expecting and she wears a size 26 when she isn’t carrying and she has found that it is almost impossible for her to find maternity clothes as her body is now taking shape for her new edition. So is it going to be affordable for everyone and are the sizes going to be for anyone from a size 0 to a size 40?

Good for Nicole!
She is a good example of how women can change and have a family, I’m really looking forward to her line hopefully its affordable=]

The dress in the picture looks like cow skin! Does a woman who is 9 months pregnant and FEELS as big as a cow really need a dress that makes her LOOK like one too? Does anyone else think that twiggy here have a subversive psyche? I think I’ll pass, thanks.

pharmgirl49 on

Are you all kidding? C’mon the girl had a DUI for gods sake. Maybe people can change, but I dunno about this girl!

My husband and I are trying for our 2nd starting at the end of the summer. I hope that I’ll be able to wear some of her line. Get Working Nicole! She’s good a great sense of style and she looked great her whole pregnancy. I hope she does more casual clothes.

Aww Nicole I’m so proud of you! Sometimes children mature some people! I’m glad that you are doing things that are productive and can benefit others. I just hope that it is affordable but either way I am proud that you are being productive! Keep up the good work!

Best wishes to Nicole and her designs but I have two questions…1)Will the clothes be affordable and 2)Will they be big enough for women who are pre-baby large? It’s hard enough finding regular clothes in larger/plus sizes and darn near impossible when pregnant!

“Seemingly exhaustible?” Try, “I’m rich and have a million people at my disposal.” I’m so sick of these no-talent reality stars being propped up as role models. Nicole Richie hasn’t had to do a real day’s work in her life. I’ll bet she’ll hire a design firm, look over a few sketches, and just sign her name, while she continues to do what she does best, starve herself, party and do tons of drugs.

Lol, of course it wont be cheap, itl probably be picked up by some big fashion house and marketed to the rich and famous, they’d never want to be caught wearing the same clothes as the general under-moneyed public. And incidentally, im pretty sure nicole richie doesnt bother to read these things so its probably a bit pointless asking her direct questions.

Good luck with everything, Nicole!

A woman who hates how pregnancy made her have big boobs is making maternity clothes? How about a star who is secure in themselves takes on this challenge, not someone who has body issues. I doubt these clothes will be for anyone over a size 2. Such is the way of Hollywood.

cynthia on

iS THE CLOTHES GOiNG TO BE FOR EVERYONE
OR JUST SKiNNY PEOPLE iS THERE ALL SiZES

cynthia on

IS THERE GOING TO DIFFERENT SIZES

Kelly on

YAY! GO NICOLE!!!! Nicole has made a total 360 she looks like a GREAT mother! Congrats nicole!!

April on

Good for you Nicole. I hope the maternity line does well. I guess through those nine months she realized how important it is for pregnant women to look and feel good.

Nicole should not have a clothing line for two reasons:
1) As far as we know, she hasn’t been to design school; therefore, she knows nothing of the work that goes into actually MAKING a line
2) I think she’s been overexposed enough

At least now she’ll be famous for doing SOMETHING…

lise on

just because she is skinny doesn’t mean that her clothes will only come in extra extra small. Go Nicole!!!

Pamela on

I hope the line is affordable, I just had my second on the 4th and maternity clothes suck!!!!! But also I am a little bit on the “heavier” side (18) and there are like no plus size maternity clothes……Good for Nicole. She has really turned it around and I am proud for her.

caroline on

I think its a great idea but Hopefully it will be affordable for the average person

Jenny on

If you’re having so much trouble finding such large clothes, then lose some weight already. Size 40? My goodness.

carri on

I hope she makes it for fat people too!!!!

Manon on

Affordable?? Probably not!

It’s been nearly 20 years since I was last pregnant, and there has certainly been a great deal of progress since then, but I sometimes still marvel that maternity-wear producers seem convinced that because a woman is going to HAVE a baby she should DRESS like one. When I wasn’t pregnant I wouldn’t have been caught dead in plaid dresses with smocking, bows, and peter-pan collars; flowery tops with yards of ruffles coordinated with grandma jeans (also ruffled); and the like–and I refused to wear them when I was pregnant. I couldn’t find maternity clothes in which I felt like myself, so I dragged out the sewing machine I hadn’t used since my teens and made my own. Good luck to Nicole: having been pregnant herself, she knows firsthand that, to many moms-to be, being comfortable and keeping her morale up by being able to recognize the person staring back at her in the mirror are equally important.

Leslie on

Thats so great because im pregnant with twins right now and with her desiging them they will red carpet ready clothes. I hope she makes them tall because it’s very hard to find maternity clothes in L.A.

Why are all the celebs making fashion lines??? They’re famous alredy!!! Bloody hell they’re just getting greedier and greedier!
