Hollywood in the Haute Seat: 2008 Couture Shows
The City of Lights shone a little brighter this week as Hollywood’s biggest stars descended on Paris for the Spring/Summer 2008 haute couture shows. See what Hilary Swank, Uma Thurman, Blake Lively, and more got up to at the most exclusive runway shows of the season.
Lost in Translation filmmaker Sofia Coppola and legendary singer Marianne Faithful were front and center for the French design house, whose parade of undulating shapes and organic details gave form to an ocean-inspired vision.
Opulent exuberance was the look at Dior, where body-conscious dresses turned up the volume in bold colors like canary yellow, lime green and fuchsia. Stars like Diane Kruger were among the luck first to get an up-close view of the collection’s cut-out platform wedge heels and fluorescent feather eyelashes.

Never one to miss out on over-the-top stylings, Dita Von Teese took in Lacroix’s collection, “An Angel Passed By”, a dreamy juxtaposition of saturated color, rich textures, and unexpected volumes.
Jean Paul Gaultier
Fishtail skirts, sailor-inspired styles, shell trims, fishnet textures: There was something decidedly fishy going on chez Gaultier. The designer reinvented timeless pieces, inspired by a beguiling underwater world ruled by modern mermaids — and French film icon Catherine Deneuve was among the lucky few to take it all in.
Hilary Swank and Mariska Hargitay watched on as Armani gave his signature self-assured tailoring a new feminine twist, with shapely jackets, origami-like details, volumized skirts, and graceful tiered gowns.
It was an elegant, ladylike affair for the retiring designer’s final show—and Hollywood’s elite made sure not to miss the momentous event. Uma Thurman, Blake Lively, Lucy Liu and Claudia Schiffer made the front row cut, and got an up-close look at a final parade of refined coats and dresses, skirt suits in pastel hues, and an exit march of gowns in the designer’s signature shade of red.
