Jennifer Lopez Goes Retro in El Cantante

Eric Liebowitz

The consummate fashionista in her real life, Jennifer Lopez relished the chance to wear tons of vintage ’70s and ‘80 fashion playing Pucchi, the wife of legendary salsa singer Hector Lavoe in El Cantante. At last night’s Los Angeles premiere, the glammed-up actress told PEOPLE that “I loved it. I think I had about 50 changes in the movie. Sometimes we’d do five, six changes a day because we shot the movie in only 36 or 37 days. We just had a great time putting it all together.” To see all of J. Lo’s sultry costumes (and her on-screen chemistry with husband Marc Anthony), check out the movie which opens on Friday.

Beauty Roadtest: Eyelash Conditioner

Courtesy of Jan Marini

Your mother warned you the eyelash curler would break your lashes. Despite that advice, you’ve spent years crimping your lashes into a flirty curl. Well, I finally learned my lesson. No prizewinners to begin with, my lashes were falling out and breaking off. No amount of mascara would make them look much better than a stubble, and I was starting to panic. But then, I heard about Jan Marini’s Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner, the cult fave of Hollywood celebs. The stylist on Desperate Housewives orders the wands by the boxful. Rachel Ray has raved and Amber Valletta wouldn’t be caught without this miracle worker. Better yet, derm to the stars, Dr. Paul McAndrews, whose specialty is all things hair (as in repairing those bald spots caused by extensions) recommends it. The conditioner is brushed on makeup-free eyes at bedtime — just never with makeup. I wasn’t buying the talk of miracles, but after three months of (almost daily) my lashes are denser, lusher and easier to curl — yeah, that’s right, I haven’t given up the curler either. What’s Hot For Fall? Pencil Skirts Like Angelina’s & Beyonce’s

MARK CHILTON/RICHFOTO/GLOBE; STEVE SANDS/BAUER-GRIFFIN

This classic look is coming back with a vengence this fall, but in order for this sexy skirt to reach its full slimming potential, you have to wear it right. First, find the right length and make sure it’s tapered then pair it with the right top. To define your midsection, do like Angelina Jolie and add a thin tonal belt to a blousy top. This will also give shape to a thick middle without calling attention to it. Add curves to a slim frame by opting for a higher waistline and V-shaped detail with a tucked in top to create a more shapely silhouette. Take a cue from Beyonce and add a fuller jacket cinched at the waist to offset wide hips without minimizing curves. No matter which way you wear this look, heels are a must. New styles like oxfords and straps shorten the leg, but a dark tight can counteract the effect. Stick with a classic pump to keep it safe. Check out our favorite pencil skirts for all budgets and the August StyleWatch issue for more options.
