It’s All About Side Ponytails This Summer

From Nicole Richie to Hayden Panettiere to Lucy Liu, stars have been stepping out with this carefree ’80s inspired style. And we thought Maria Menounos looked so sweet with hers at the NBC TCA party last week that we had to pass on tips on how to get this easy ‘do! Start by adding texture — Nicole Richie’s stylist Andy LeCompte suggests a dry shampoo to rough hair up, followed by a drop of shine serum for polish. Then gather hair close to the nape of your neck and over to one side (far enough that it falls over your shoulder). To secure the ponytail, try a clear rubber band or wrapping a one inch section of your own hair around it to conceal the band. Leave some tendrils loose around your face, and you’re good to go!

Maria’s pony tail is not an 80’s side pony tail.
It is higher, messier, and a lot more to the side.
My side pony tail like everyone elses was not a subtle as the one in the picture.

Very few people can pull off this look. In my opinion, only girls with long, wavy hair can wear their hair like this. I tried wearing my hair like this and my hair is very choppy and layered and it didn’t look good, straight or curly. Besides, Maria’s doesn’t look like a side pony. It looks like a normal ponytail that’s been draped over her shoulder.

Side ponytails have a sweetness to them that connotes freshness and youth. On the downside, it also highlights asymmetry in the face, as all of the focus goes on to one side of the face. I say, select your side carefully and wear pale lips so that the bush of the tail and your mouth won’t be competing for attention.
