When I went to my stylist for a color and highlights I was very picky and told him I didn't want any hint of red (which black hair always seems to turn). I wanted a warm/tawny brown with dark golden highlights. He achieved this (it's a long process!) by stripping my hair of color and then adding color and finally highlights. He followed it up with deep conditioning treatments. I was afraid all the chemicals would really destroy my hair but was surprised that it was still in great shape and the result was exactly what I wanted. Much like Maggie Q's New York picture.
