That's funny- the seals are only killed "for their own well being".

Most scientists outside the Canadian government who have studied the Canadian government's management of the seal hunt have agreed that the quotas are unsustainable, especially given the impact climate change will have on seal habitat.

The seal hunt never stopped comletely, but the amount of seals killed by hunters dramatically dropped in the 1980s and 1990s because of campaigns by environmental and animal protection groups, giving the depleted population a chance to recover. The large scale killing only returned in the late 90s because of large amounts of government subsidies. Nobody is saying that people in coastal communities in Atlantic Canada shouldn't have jobs, but if the Canadian government is going to subsidize an industry with tax payer money, shouldn't it subsidize an industry that is more humane, sustainable, less dangereous for the workers and more stable than the seal hunt? Many politicians in Europe have witnessed the seal hunt first hand in recent years and all have said the same thing- the commercial seal hunt is poorly regulated and not humane. A number of countries in Europe have banned the importation of fur from all seals and the European Union as a whole will likely do the same soon, so if I was the Canadian government I would start thinking of alternative ways to help Atlantic Canadians than the risky and dangerous commercial seal hunt.

Eric, who said I was a wealthy citizen defending the fur trade? I'm not wealthy nor do I own one piece of fur (though I'm wearing leather shoes...but that comes from a cow). Perhaps if you read more deepy into the facts you'd realize that seals are not killed soley for fur! I did not say that seals were NOT killed for fur...of course they are, but they are also killed for food & oils as well. This hunt is no more cruel then any hunt out there! Its not pretty; hunters obviousley don't "enjoy" killing seals...but its done for thier well being! The hunt makes up to 1/4 of annual income for those who participate...this is not something that is done for sport or recreation! To blame Newfoundlander's for overfishing is ignorant! Do you know anything about this province besides the hunt????? Foreign over-fishing from countries who come into water boundaries with trawlers and literally SUCK THE BOTTOM out of the ocean are vastly to blame for the depletion of cod stocks. Wouldn't THESE fishing practices be deemed as harmful to the environment? Species of fish have been depleted because of this, but I forgot, they aren't cute so it doesn't really matter. If every person in the province Newfoundland fished for a year & caught as much fish as possible it wouln't put a dent into what 50 foreign trawlers would catch in one trip off the Grand Banks.
There are estimated to be about 5.9 millions harp seals that live in areas that would be affected by the East Coast seal hunt....this years quota was less then 300 000. Give it a break people! This species is far from in danger and never will be because of the annual seal hunt!
Hey, I realize that this debate is neverending! The two opposing sides are vastly different...what I ask is that before you jump to conclusions and talk about the "cruel" "barbaric" practices of killing seals you sit back and think....think of the families that live in small outports that depend on this hunt every spring to be able to support thier kids. Think of how they feel when they are risking thier lives to put food on the table while the rest of the world thinks that they are barbaric animals! Think of the #'s. Realize that this is NOT soley a fur market. Its a living. Its humane. Its ugly, but every slaugherhouse is ugly. Every cow, chicken and lamb that is killed for our suppers is killed in a gruesome way. Its the reality of the world we live in.
Get the facts. You won't find them on PETA sites...of course they will all be one-sided! This isn't a practice done for FUN...its done for survival.
Think what you wish. Ban products, it doesn't matter. The seal hunt will never end. Animals rights activist can parade and protest all they want but it won't make a difference. The seal hunt is a reality that will exist for quite some time. It won't stop...and I'm very happy about that.

I think Dan hit the nail on the head with this one. Seriously, who really needs to "buy" fur coats anymore? I completely understand the Innu people hunting and using seals for everything they can think of. Canadians will probably defend this cruel act forever so why argue with them? It's why they are so good at standing in the corner instead of taking on the world's issues at hand. Hey, let's talk about it!....Please, if all we ever did was talk about this crap, nothing would ever get done. So, like most Americans, I say, Let's go out there (the world) and get something done!

The seal herd does not need "thinning out". Climate change is likely going to just get worse and scientists predict the melting ice will cause serious declines in seal numbers. Newfoundlanders only say that the seals need to be "thinned" because they continue to blame the harp seals for the fishing industry's irresponsible management of the cod population. Its always easier to blame a wild animal than to seriously reflect on your practices.

Over the past 10 years, between one-third and one-half of all seal pups have been slaughtered by commercial sealers. Because seals only reach breeding age at 6 years, the impacts of high hunting levels are only starting to be felt. Under the current management plan, by the time the Canadian government decides to take action to save the population, it may be too late to intervene. Today's kill levels meet and even exceed those of the 1950s and 1960s, when over-hunting quickly reduced the harp seal population by nearly two-thirds.

I'm glad to see celebs speaking out. Holly tells people concerned about the seal hunt to "get their priorities right" but if she cares so much about impoverished people, why is she spending so much time defending the luxury fur trade? I just wish rich people who defend the fur trade would spend their time and money on helping others than buying and promoting fur coats, which typically cost around $5000 or $10,000. Think about how many poor children that would feed!

I think the seal hunt is horrible, not only from the animal perspective but also from the human rights perspective too. In the 1997 book by former seal hunter Michael Dwyer called 'Over the Side, Mickey', he writes:

“I’ll never do it again. As for tradition, to hell with that. I know next spring when the seals come, I won’t be there to meet them. If I ever get the urge to hunt seals again, I’ll read a small portion of this account and remember the agonies, miseries, hardships, dangers and the backbreaking, repulsive disgusting, grizzly work. I’ll lie down until the urge passes.”
- Michael Dwyer, former Newfoundland seal hunter

Baby seals are not clubbed - so when they're white, they're fine. Plus a quota is set for the seals to thin the herd, but not endanger their numbers. Read more before jumping to conclusions.

YES, Elda,

WE ALL CAN LEARN SOMETHING SPECIAL FROM ANIMALS, PLANTS, EACH OTHER, AND THIS BEAUTIFUL WONDERFUL BIOSPHERE WE CALL PALNET EARTH!

GO PLANET EARTH!!!!

p.s. one more thing, I don't have a problem with the native peoples of the seal region using the seals as for food and for clothing, of course when it comes to killing them it should be as humane as possible...none of this archaic caveman-like clubbing s*#t! I know it sounds bad but the use of a gun would be more humane.

If a compromise, has to be made it should be a strictly regional act only of humane killings and regional distribution!! ONLY for the natives who live off the land should be licensed to such activities!!

I hope some of you have seen the footage of the men scrambling around on ice hitting the seals three or more times...just to kill it.......!!!

Well, I read Shmoo's comment too, Shmoo had some really good points too!!

Laters!

p.s. one more thing, I don’t have a problem with the native peoples of the seal region using the seals as for food and for clothing, of course when it comes to killing them it should be as humane as possible…none of this archaic caveman-like clubbing s*#t! I know it sounds bad but the use of a gun would be more humane.

Heidi, thank you for your words and yes I have seen several differents kinds of full grown seals in nature and in aquariums too! My comment was concerning the # of ratios between fish, seals, and people...seems alittle out of balance...??? Honestly, my problem is the growing human poplution...it's scary 6.5 BILLION PEOPLE (and growing) and all the other creatures (that were here first) are being driven to extinction becuase of people!!!

But, this debate can go on forever and it has many sides, I believe it is good to know what kind of understandings and facts there truly are!! It helps to see the bigger picture with better glasses!!

Heidi my dear, I must clarify, that many Americans DID NOT VOTE (not once or twice) for Bush!!!!! It's a nasty annoying story how he got into office!! It's this current government that wants this "war" because of it's own personal agenda(s)...it's not secret!! So, Heidi, I am going to use your own words "before you criticise know your facts!" But, please, no offense I am just trying to make a point that many of us have or understand what priorties need to be taken....in order to be better!! It's sad for those who are making good differences everyday and still need to fight for respect and have their voice heard!!

But, the troops and the people of this country who are not in favor of this "war" do not deserve to be generally lumped with those who do!! I, for one, have no respect for this conflict!!! But, that's besides the current point!!

Heidi, I want you to know I understand your's, faith's, Holly's, and Dana's comments and arguments very well!! I am very willing to listen and do my research....so, if we as people, can come to together and resepect each other we just might get somewhere...closer to peace and hope...

It's not just the seals that are suffering from human demand......it's the whole planet from the coral reefs to glaciers and from atmosphere to the poor/hungry...it's everyone and everything! I just wish the human poplution growth would slow down so, we all could get a good firm grip on what's going on and where we are headed!!

Please no offense to anyone!

Go Planet Earth! Go Green, Clean, Solar Power, Wind Power, and Brain Power!! LET'S BE BETTER AS HUMANS!!

Cheers and best regards to all!!

i will never undertstand mankind for wanting to get rid of certain populations of animals because they either take to much land or are eating what mankind thinks they are eating to much of. mankind is selfish and believe in eating every single animal out there that won't eat them that's why this world is all jacked up. mankind wants everything out there, land, etc. animals have a special gift mankind will never have, sensing danger, storms, etc. maybe we can all learn something special from animals.

Sorry Heidi, most Americans can manage to care about more than one issue at a time. Don't be an idiot.

Maybe the clubbing is what makes everyone so mad... no pain, no fight. Is that the answer? I would wear the hoodie.
