Thanks Joan for that post. I don't see why one would question the support a celebrity has for a presidential candidate, as if their status in Hollywood means they don't know politics. They have the opportunity to be just as informed as the next person, and there's no point in singling them out as if they aren't informed.

Second @ Megan. Your comment is tacky and racist, imo. You don't know Ms. Berry or why she is supporting Obama, so to insinuate it's because he's black, is stating you don't believe a black woman has enough profundity to know why she's supporting a particular candidate other than the race card. Her shirt does no say support Obama because he's black. Race wasn't even brought up, nor is it a matter unless you make it a matter. If she were supporting a white candidate, would your excuse be because that person is white? Halle is of mixed race, so why would you even think to make her support for a candidate racial?

Why are there white people supporting him? Why are there blacks that don't support him? It's politics...not which color of the crayon box do you like most.

There is a Ms. Black USA, because blacks are an underrepresented segment of the US population in beauty contests. It is to bring a sense of pride back to a group that has evolved in a country where blacks were not considered people, where the traditional look of blacks are not appreciated by the overall population, and where a group that was stripped of their humanity can now learn to see the greatness that is amongst their race, without having to compare it to the greatness of the white race. It is not meant to down the white race, but uplift the black race to a level where we still have not gotten to.

I think Halle Berry's great, and I think her choice in clothing and in this case support for Barack Obama is awesome. Don't know what website they referenced in the document, but I bought my wife and I shirts from the official Obama for Change website http://www.obamaforchange.com

Hey Elda!! Thanks! I hope you are well, these fine spring days!!?? I've been trying hard to kick butt with my 4.5 mile bike ride 5 x wk, I know it doesn't seem like alot but, there are hills I have to face....woof!

Anyway, I must say, I agree with Joan as well, she and faith have made some really good points that deserve to be understood from both perspectives!! I find, that here in "off the rack" some comments can lead to really good debating amongst the posters....it actually makes reading this blog fun!!

I would love to know what Charla Dickenson would have to say about the on going discussion here....??? As for me, I think I would trip over my words too much to make any sense about politics..I get so damn excited/annoyied...I'll be quiet....

Well, since the subject is about "change" (more or less), I'll finish with a quote of change....

"Things are changing,
but nothing changes,
and still there are changes."

Cheers!

joan, thanks for the dissenting opinion--it encourages healthy debate.
regarding your comments: i NEVER said people in the entertainment industry don't have the right to voice their political preferences; i only questioned their motives, which is MY right as an american citizen to do.
and to say that it is unnecessary to analyze why powerful and influential people/corporations endorse a certain candidate is shortsighted, and in my opinion foolish. i believe it is our responsibility to find out who supports who and why, and what they stand for, and what special interests are being catered to. in fact, if you don't believe me, then why are there so many journalists and political analysts that make it THEIR JOB to study, conduct polls, write articles, and discuss in the news media this very subject? why is it news when the president or CEO of a company throws their money behind a candidate?
it is important because this sometimes leads to preferential treatment of the endorsee's personal interests in the form of special favors and the such.
THEREFORE, i am simply encouraging others to do what they should be doing, which is read up on a candidate and their issues. and you better bet that the people contributing money will have their interests being served, and it is important to see if you agree with those interests so you can decide how to cast your vote.
if you've paid attention in the last 20 years, you will have noticed that there is a decline in voting, and a general mistrust of political candidates. and when people don't take the time to find out, or don't think their voice will be heard, it has the potential for turning into a simple popularity contest. and THAT is what i don't agree with -- period.

I bet if you asked her why she wants Obama she would tell you a few "ligitamate" reasons but if you got down to the heart of it...its because he is black. I am not racist but in my experiences talking to people about why they choose him it is beacuse they want a black person in a higher office. It doesnt matter if he is qualified they just want a person of a different race in control so they can give one more day an official "black" holiday! One question? Why is it that we have a Ms. United States and a Ms. Black United States, if some white person chose to call the regular Ms. United States Ms WHite United States it would be considered racial and illegal?? Just a thought.

Well, I must say that I DISAGREE with Faith AND Taneka. First, people who are in the entertainment industry have as much right to voice their political preferences as any other American citizen. It is not necessary to analyze why they are endorsing a political candidate. They have the freedom to do so -- period. Second, "Change" means a change in policy: from waging war to waging peace, from denying the existence of global warming to endorsing eco-friendly policies, and the list goes on.... As for the t-shirt, I think that it's great to finally see a campaign shirt that is actually sylish and that you don't mind wearing out and about and not just to a political rally!
