I found a few bridesmaid dresses I would like for my bridesmaids: David’s Bridal style 81372 and style F12441
I’m even considering some cheaper alternatives for them, like Forever 21’s Summer Halter dress in yellow ($28) or their tropical Halter Dress in teal and pink ($29.80), or their India Dress ($24.80) if they had it in any other color but burgundy. We are having an outdoor wedding in July so I want my girls to be as comfortable as possible and not have to pay a fortune!! My groomsmen will be wearing khakis and button down solid shirts, to offset the colors of the bridesmaid dresses. I prefer lilac, yellow, or sage green dresses, strapless, and around knee length – that’s about all the criteria I have!!!

I also agree that the bride and groom should cover the cost of bridesmaid dresses/tuxedo rentals! My bride (my boyfriend’s future sister-in-law) doesn’t have a lot of money, and all of their money is going toward their wedding – so I paid $110 for my pink david’s bridal dress (style: 8355). I had to get it hemmed though, which was another $50. And I’m pretty sure I will never wear the dress again! But the bride informed me that when my boyfriend and I get married and go on our honeymoon, that I could wear that dress out to a fancy dinner.. No way in hell! It definitely isn’t my style! But, I must say I am very grateful to being take part in the ceremony!!

any advice as to when I should throw the bridal shower/bachelorette party??! How far in advance?? I mean, we only have 7 weeks left!! Also, if anyone (readers or People editors) have advice on good websites to hit up for bridal shower/bachelorette party IDEAS/GIFTS/GAMES that sort of thing, please let me know!!!!

This is such a dumb thing to do! Just because the bride wants her pretty wedding pictures, everybody in the party has to bend backwards to make her happy (including wearing ugly dresses, and putting up with other crazy requests, like the plastic oranges in the headpiece!). How about having a wedding where everybody (including the bridal party) can wear anything they want, so they can feel comfortable and appreciated for who they are, and not bodies that are just meant to display the dresses that the bride picked? This would be a novel idea!

We were married 25 years ago and the bridesmaids dresses were heavily influenced by my now sister-in-law. I would not make that decision again. The dresses were yellow floral with hoops under them and were off the shoulder. One one my bridesmaids was/is a very large woman and I am sure she would have loved to of killed me for making her wear that dress.

It’s important to keep in mind (and it’s probably the case w/this pic.) that these dresses probably looked great for their time period. Unfortunately, most fashion isn’t timeless.

Someone noted that the bride sometimes picks ugly dresses so that she will look the best out of everyone – SO TRUE!
My sister picked a BURGUNDY dress for her wedding last year.
Is this color even made anymore?
It’s so 1980’s!!
I looked like a big fat grape!
EVERYONE hated it! My husband was cracking up when I tried it on. My sister in law threw hers away as soon as the wedding was finished.
SO – I am planning a party next week – everyone is required to wear their ugly old bride’s maid dresses. They’re so excited!

I do remember when that style dress was considered pretty…. I did have to wear that style, in a cotton floral, for my friend’s wedding it it was so ugly. But she was a friend and I was happy to donate it right after. I almost made it into a table cloth or place mats and napkins – it was perfect for those, but she would have been insulted….. My bridesmaids wore a fitted jacked and long skirt (my maid of honor just had a baby and was nursing, so the button up jacket was helpful). They were in dark green. I don’t know if they wore them again, they said they liked them…..

First of all I would like to thank my sister for letting us choose our own dresses, second I would like to say be kind to your brides maids. I know it’s the brides day and all but the other people in the wedding party should be happy to. It’s going to be a pretty lame reception if none of the wedding party will let anyone in their dress. I guess I’m fortunate my sister let us pick out a dress that we liked, she liked and our budgets liked too.

I only had one bridesmade and told her I would like her to have a purple dress. She got two dresses from Ross for $10 each and then showed me each of them. One was just perfect and you can’t beat the bargain.

One person’s idea of what beautiful and elegant is may not be someone else’s. When a woman asks you to be in her wedding, you should respect the requests she asks of you in terms of clothing, makeup, shoes, etc. When my sister in law got married, her bridemaids made such a noise about what they would and wouldn’t wear that she ended up having the ugliest plainest dresses I’ve ever seen and she hated them. If a bride wants to have hideous dresses, that’s her choice whether you agree with it or not and to vocalize that to her when she’s got enough to worry about already is so rude and disrespectful. To demand that a bride sacrifice what she wants on a day that IS about her and her husband to be only shows how selfish her bridesmaids are.

I think I was fairly kind to my bridesmaids…they were pale pink dresses with a full skirt, but several of my girls were able to use their dresses for other events. I have been a bridesmaid a few times also and I think that my brides weren’t too unkind. One of them was a gorgeous strapless black floorlength dress that makes me wish I had somewhere else to wear it! The other one was a brushed satin wine colored 2 piece dress that I was not too fond of. It had a corset top and I had just given birth to my son 2 weeks before the wedding so the amount of cleavage that I was displaying was definitely not appropriate!

My sister got married a couple of years ago and her other bridesmaid and myself were able to choose our own dresses. We chose black cocktail dresses and they are oh so elegant, but also cost about $500 each so thank goodness my sister was paying… The great thing is that I ahve been able to wear the dress again and again as it is such a beatiful dress. Thanks sis! I definitely won’t repay you with a orange polka-dot taffeta number when I do the deed!

i have also been in the position of bride and bridesmaid. i had 6 girls, and told them go pick out black dresses, whatever you want ( just don’t be too sl***y ). they were perfect! and not goth or deathlike in any way, it was very elegant. but i TRUSTED my bridesmaids and loved them, that’s why they were there! now on the other hand, i’ve been a bridesmaid where the bride was horrendous ( $100 dollars for a seafoam mermaid dress, i have no clue ) we tried, but she wouldn’t budge. to me that goes to show how selfish you are, no matter if it’s “your day” or not.

I understand you Leslie, but does the bride have to pick out such ugly dresses? I mean, NOBODY can like the way that blue pouf looks! Is it just to be mean – “I (the bride) have to be the prettiest?”
I would think that a beautiful, elegant wedding where everybody looked great would be the ideal…

i had never been a bridesmaid until last august when my friend got married and offered me the maid of honour position, i was so excited until i saw the dress. It was bright orange, im talking neon orange and it had so many ruffles that couldnt see where i was going. It made me look like i weighed 19 stone and to make matters worse, i had a head piece with plastic oranges on it. I think that tops the lot.

My mom had the nastiest bridesmaid’s dresses. They were red, had long trains and had this Japanese-style collar, you know the turtle-kneck style type, except they had little keyholes in them and inside the keyholes there was a little gold bell, that jingled when they walked.
