Cate Blanchett's Mysteriously Missing $100,000 Purse

03/02/2007 at 03:14 PM ET

Is Cate Blanchett the victim of some fashion foul play? The actress was set to carry a $100,000 Lana Marks purse on the red carpet, but the bag mysteriously went missing from her hotel room the day before the Oscars. While the New York Daily News is speculating that it could be the result of a secret plot, a Lana Marks Company spokesperson had no comment on the circumstances. The handbag was produced in black alligator and framed in 18-kt gold with white diamonds and 35 carats of pavé black diamonds. “We are devastated by the loss of this handbag and request that anyone who has information regarding its whereabouts please step forward and contact the Los Angeles Police Department,” the rep tells PEOPLE. (We’ll let you make your own fashion police joke now.)

Why make bags that are more valuable than their contents? Altogether it makes no sense, and i find the fact that a bag is made of aligator skin with diamonds completely classless. Such a things is just for showing off, very new rich!

Alligators can live up to 60 years on up, i have to much respect for a creature that can live as long as us.

It sounds so tacky that I can’t imagine anyone wanting to steal it.

Blanchett must have been out of her mind to be carrying that much money and should have guarded the purse with her life.

Ladies… this wasn’t Cate’s everyday errand-running bag. It was a clutch to carry to the Oscars, and unless you live in a cave somewhere, you must be aware that all accessories for Oscar night are beyond luxe. Don’t forget that most of these stars were wearing pieces of jewelry (usually rented) that are worth more than the average American’s home. With that in mind, how can you be surprised at the purse’s value? That’s the Oscars, people! *The* night of Hollywood opulence. Fortunately, these items are usually heavily insured.

Apparently Cate Blanchett’s purse was a bargain. The Lana Marks purse carried by Helen Mirren was worth $250,000.

I enjoy watching trends, but this is a gigantic waste of money. Imagine what problems we could start to solve with the money spent on these “fashion” purses…

Why in the word was a purse worth that much left lying around where someone could take it? If that is how she takes care of things then it is her own fault. Why was it not locked up. That purse was worth more than a lot of people make in two years of hard work…if she left it lying around it was asking for it to be stolen. There are people in the world who don’t have enough to eat..people without health insureance…and flashing your wealth is foollish… She does not deserve to get it back.

Instead of taking pity on poor Cate Blanchett and her x-amount of dollar purse, try focusing on why she had to buy a purse priced at an unimaginable price. That money could probably feed children in Africa for several months. Although you do hear about celebrities “trying” to help kids in need, its not about helping them and making a difference that these celebs want to do, they want the publicity and the attention they will recieve off it. I’m disappointed People would choose a story like that to post on their website. I would surely hope they make better choices in the future.

I think that’s what she told everyone when she realized the handbag was not going to match her outfit! Also handbags for 100k, that’s bucks….

If I could steal anything, I’d choose to steal the beautiful Cate instead of her posessions.
