Payless has a few leather shoes and but most of their trendy styles are made of PVC as the last poster stated. Man-made material that does not "breathe" and "stretch" like leather. What I found about PVC is the shoe does not mold or conform nicely to being "reshaped" like real leather. However......

If the manufacturer takes time with the shoe, you can design a well-constructed shoe out of PVC without bumps, lumps, visual glue from the upper part of the shoe to the sole, etc. It can be done. I think this is the direction Payless is now trying to take. They also bought out American Eagle's Shoe line so they do offer a mid-level brand name in shoes and they have hired a "guest" shoe designers to produce trendier, runway style, quality shoes.

I like Payless Shoes for their canvas shoes more than the PVC. I would like to see them improve in that area, by making sure the "construction" is better of their PVC shoes, which I think they are doing NOW. They are on the right track and they are getting better with their shoe lines every season. I applause them for working to bring the level of their shoes up to a better standard and offering their customers better selection. Payless Shoes is on the fast-track and they are the ones to watch nowadays!

.....And for the poster that said their shoes smell. I strongly suggest you wash your feet every day, use Shea Butter on your feet, buy the correct shoe size and get yourself some good in-soles that are cushioned and absords moisture. Then your feet nor your shoes will stink. It's call basis human hygiene, Payless is not responsible for that.

The reason why cheap shoes smell is because they are made with man made materials that don't let your feet breathe.
They are normally made with some type of PVC, so for you veggies out there that don't wear leather, they don't help the environment.

They do not normally last as well as the manmade materials do not hold their shape and they are not given enough time in the factory for the workers to take care of them as they go around the line.

You have to pick your battles.

Shoes, can't live with them (if they hurt my feet)
can't live without them, if they look that good.

I love shoes cheap & expensive. Manolos & Payless.
Who cares? bottom line is, if it makes your outfit look great
and if they feel great on your feet (stinky or not!) then
go for it!

Fashion, like art; are not matters to be discussed but respected and enjoyed deeply!

The only pair of heels that I ever had break, was a pair of Jimmy Choos. Paying high price does not always mean better quality.

Fine, call me a snob or whatever. Surprisingly enough, I actually do buy clothes from Target or other normal, budget-friendly places. I just happen to be picky about what goes on my feet because I have to walk in them. From my experience, I've found that pricier shoes really are better well-made.

Some people splurge on vacations. Some people splurge on cars. I splurge on shoes.

Everyone here is obviously missing the point. Mary, you shouldn't feel bad about your ability to afford ridiculously overpriced shoes. That's your choice. But don't put down Payless or the people who buy them, that's all. That's why the "Payless" people are attacking you back. Because you, j, etc do sound snobby and who the hell likes a snob except other snobs?

BTW, Do you relaize that your shoes, the actual leather part or whatever is just a tiny slip of material and the rest is a sole?? That's why women are such idiots (I am a woman), because they like making designers richer! HA, the mark up is probably 500 percent!!! You can convince yourself all you want that you are buying "quality" but you can spend 100 dollars and get the same quality without the name brand. Just saying, it's your money though, do what you want with it. But, most women are still dumb I say. There was a whole article in New York Magazine about how the markups for designer women's wear has more then doubled because of all these label conscious females willing to buy a piece of glamour and the so called lifestyle MAry was talking about. The article says that women WANT TO PAY MORE. It makes them feel more worthy etc..
It's all a sham. It's one thing to love fashion, it's another to get ripped off.

Holy cow, lighten up people.

First of all, lisa, I DO know what it's like being poor, with parents battling unemployment and such. I often went hungry during school. And I have done PLENTY of volunteer work in the past. I certainly do know what I am talking about. So perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to jump conclusions, hmm?

After many years, I have worked hard and found my own success and I feel entitled to enjoy a $600 pair of Manolo Blahniks, which I can easily afford. I don't have to give up anything, they are part of my lifestyle, and I should NOT be made to feel bad about it.

j, you sound like a very angry person. why are you so rude?
You have all that stuff, do you have a house like lane said?
probably not. or not even that long
list you rambled off
sometimes the people who act like
they have the most, really have the least

or how about something you can't buy...like friends?
Woah, I wouldn't want to give you a Christmas present, you might just throw it in the garbage!
lighten up, it's just shoes! Wanna go shopping?
there's a Payless not too far from me.
It's a joke, laugh, relax, no one's out to get you
buy whatever you want, hopefully it'll make you a happier person

i agree with j. the shoes and store have a funny odor...haha. but still, this is a very objective topic so payless shoes are great for some, not so great for others. i've had a few pairs and they have been uncomfortable and fallen apart BUT they were cute so it's all good. there is a reason sometimes something is $11.99 and something else is $89.99.

thank you for being concerned with my financial status. i have a roth ira, fidelity investments, a money market account,& two different savings accounts, with NO debt to my name. i work two jobs b/c i want to--not b/c i have to. i do not purchase things i don't have the money for. i prefer quality, i guess i should have worded my initial post differently. never has one of my comments been so misconstrued. people like their payless. got it.

Payless shoes have come a long way. Yes, they have some pretty icky styles, but they also have some nice, tasteful ones, too. I bought a pair of shoes from there 8 years ago that are still intact, still work with a lot of today's styles, and have always been very comfortable. If I were to sniff them, they would probably smell like feet...but I do not plan on going there.

When I see the kind of nasty junk people will spend top money for, I am appalled. Sure, some pricey shoes are fabulous, and some I can only hope will fall apart soon so that I do not have to look at them again.

Payless shoes may be cheaply made, but what do you really lose if they fall apart on you? 25 bucks? Just go buy a new pair!

Don't look at the inside of my shoes, and I won't look inside yours... ;)

I too have no problem with Payless Shoes - now. This coming from someone who wouldn't be caught dead in the store more or less the shoes. Well, I totally have changed my mind and attidue. No, I don't buy their shoes but they sure do have the cutes sneakers - I've now bought 3 pairs all at under $20 and that's about what I think sneakers should cost. I continue to buy most of my shoes from Lord and Taylor but trust me, if I happen to find a pair of shoes in Payless that I like then I will buy them. And as for all of those people with the snide comments about Payless be careful what you say - you could be forced to shop their in your later years - when you have no money for retirement, living off of social security.
