Beauty Trendwatch: Deep Red Lips

02/22/2007 at 04:55 PM ET

We’ve been spotting red lips pop up on everyone from Cameron Diaz to Beyonce, but some stars are taking the look one step further with a dark crimson. More dramatic and edgy than the old Hollywood scarlet lips, these dark reds are turning up on the mouths of trendsetters like Kate Winslet, Ashley Olsen and Gwyneth Paltrow. Not for the weak of heart or the imperfect of skin, a color this dark has to be worn carefully — try a nude lip liner underneath to keep it from creeping and a hit of blush to keep you from looking like Elvira is key. Just remember to keep eye makeup to a minimum to amp up the hit of color on your mouth.

Can we please stop calling things the Olsen twins do a trend? I know this is Ashley and she’s more pulled together, but MK is going to think she’s trendy by association. Does People magazine really want to be responsible for that?

Kate’s was too dark and too thick, but I like it on Gwyneth and Ashley. A dark red lip is very sophisticated and grown-up looking. I think it looks best if you soften it a bit with a lighter gloss.

I’m very pale and my favorite product to use to get a bright, crimson lip is Stila’s Lip Rouge in Pucker. I wrote a review on my blog about it, you can read it here:

MAKE UP….THE LESS THE BETTER! I THINK THEY CAN PULL IT OFF THOUGH (THEY ARE CELEBRITIES)…BUT I WOULD NEVER BE SEEN WEARING THIS DARK HARSH COLOR ON MY LIPS…UNLESS IM GOING TO A CUSTOME PARTY!

This dark red is so distracting, it’s hard to see anything else but their lips. I don’t care for it.

Without the right outfit – it just looks like you’ve been punched in the mouth!

Such a classic look, but I agree with softening the color with a lighter gloss. Fair skinned ladies absolutely CAN pull this look off – very classy.

Do not try if you can’t pull it off! And honestly, other than Kate Winslet, I don’t know who can…It’s really not a trend made for the “average” person. They’d all look very different walking around K-Mart with this make-up on. If you still wanna go for it, I’d recommend Chanel lipstick :) It’s fabulous.

I don’t like the deep red lipstick thing because it makes everyone look pale. Even if you are tanned, it would make you look pale!!!!!

Oh and also, Ashley is just plain scary.

I agree with Sarah. I am a Latina with light olive skin and this dark red lipstick looks pretty good on me.
Oh all of them Olsen looks best since she has yellow undertones. And Gwenyth’s is way too matte!!

Lighter complexion girls can still pull of red, if it’s not as dark. Something like the shade Christina Aguillera wears.
