That Spring Bag Really Is More Expensive Than Last Year!

02/04/2007 at 06:00 AM ET

Started looking at the new spring clothes and gone into complete sticker shock? You are not alone. We are noticing that prices seem noticably higher than, oh say, a year ago. What’s the deal? Ann Watson, VP fashion director of trendy Manhattan department store Henri Bendel, confirms our suspicions. According to Watson, prices have actually been growing for the past four years: “An average luxury handbag four years ago cost between $900 and $1100, but today the average bag is $1400 to $1900- that’s quite a significant difference!” Check out this new Fendi canvas bag that is $1430 at The reason for this jump is based on simple economics — many materials and labor come from Europe where the dollar is much weaker than the Euro, which means rising prices at the mall. And it’s not like fashion is getting simpler, as Watson points out, “For spring, there are a lot of rosettes, ruffles and trims that consist of a lot of hand work and definitely drives the prices up.” Ironically, the luxury market keeps getting stronger despite the growing prices, with sales continuing to climb. What do you think? Have you noticed a price rise? Is it stopping you from shopping?

Are you kidding me? That is the UGLIEST bag I have ever seen!!!!! I wouldnt pay five dollars for that! Can anyone say bowling bag?

I have a question:

Does anyone know who makes the adorable red and white polka dot dress that Mandy Moore wears in “Because I Said So.” Her clothes in the film are so cute and I want them all!!

Rising prices just mean that I still don’t get to shop for most luxury items. I only recently started buying Coach handbags and even their prices can be steep. The most expensive bag I have purchased from there was about $700 and I could only swing that because I got a nice bonus. I can’t imagine spending $2000 on a single handbag.

I’ll never notice the price raise as I don’t by anything name brand. I’m not going to waste a month’s income on a purse or a “trend” that will eventually go out of style.

Rachel on

this is totally stopping me! i never buy bags if they’re over $500 – $1900 for a bag seems ridiculous!

Ick, $1400 for a canvas bag? And an ugly one at that. No thanks.

In order to get a good quality bag you have to drop some extra money. Right now I’m loving my Fendi Canvas B Bag and I can’t wait until my Bottega Veneta Montaigne in gray crocodile comes in, I ordered in through the Bottega boutique the other day. :-D

am i the only one who thinks that it is disgusting to buy a 2000 dollar pocketbook when there are people in america who can’t afford to buy food for their children?

excuse me i wouldnt waste a dollar on the junk. can you say tacky that thing may has well have flew out of the milky way

I can’t imagine spending my entire month’s pay on a BAG. Anyone who can afford this bag clearly has a very very high paying job (and isn’t a teacher like I am, thats for sure) or a significant other with a lot of money. It makes me sick to think that people spend that much money on a purse.

i don’t see anything wrong with someone spending $2000 on a designer bag.hey if you got the money spend it.i don’t mind at all spending that on a designer bag,as long as it’s bag that will always be a classic.

I would NEVER buy that bag for amost fifteen hundred dollars. It looks incredibly cheep with the giant buckles and the colour scheme. It looks like something Minnie Mouse would carry. If I were to really splurge, I would buy a classic Hermes or Balenciaga bag, oversized, distressed black leather in a slouchy shape. Even then, I would never pay two thousand bucks.

Tayme on

If you want to buy something for yourself or splurge on yourself, I don’t see the problem. Absolutely not for me though! I wouldn’t even go into debt so I could “look cute” or have the newest “trend.” I think anyone who spends $1430 on a bag has got to be out of their minds, but I guess money doesn’t mean nothing to that person. Money means a lot to me, I’m all about saving and cheaper. I own a BIJOU handbag, which I’m in love with, and I could care least if it went out of style tomorrow or if it did today. I’ll let myself decide when it’s time to discard my stuff.

My BIJOU handbag only cost me $140.00, which isn’t a lot when you compare it to $1430 for a Fendi, Gucci or any other topnotch handbag.

It is true. The handbag has now become the “It” item. Since when do handbags cost more than the whole clothing ensemble? Some bags even go up to over 10,000 USD as can be seen by some Hermes totes. Demand for the new “It” item has also driven the price up, as luxury bags are now a sign of unfathomable, yet less obvious wealth and have taken the place of extremely conspicous jewelry. Though I too am shocked by the current prices of luxury bags, I have followed the throng of believers. I have purchased, over the span of 6 months, the Chanel Lucky Charm bag, LV multicolores and a sequined Blumarine bowler bag. I have my eyes set on a Chloe Paddington, prices range from 1,500 USD to 4,000 USD depending on the size and make. Even though I’ll have to prance around in my underwear for lack of money to by clothes after splurging on handbags, I will hold in my hand a little (oversize) piece of heaven.

I agree, Bess. We need to think about someone besides ourselves.

I saw a bag very similar to this one at Target this weekend. The bag at Target of course is way more affordable than this one. So if you like the look of it, go for the Target bag.

I cant pin point this bag, I dont like it I think cause it reminds me of an old ladies bag

Lilly on

Love the bag. Would absolutely buy it. The price of it does not bother me for a second.

bess… count me as another one. Tayme, I also have a Bijou bag and love it. I have the “Girlfriend” bag in hot pink. Love it. I also love my Fuzzy Nation purse. It’s a Schnauzer dog and is realistic enough to have fooled real dogs out for a walk. Just something fun.

That ugly purse would pay my mortage for 3 months.

That bag is HAUTE. Check out my blog everyone!

I love designer handbags and accessories but the prices are so steep! As a stay at home mom I could NEVER justify more than $100 for a handbag, that is why I love a new up and coming designer. Her name is Kathy Van Zeeland and her styles are fantastic and all her handbags are affordable (under $100). I would love People to profile her!

It looks like the Target logo!

Are we all lemmings? What a vicious cycle. The mags show us what the celebs are sporting because it sells more copies, we buy the stuff {being the loyal followers}and buy more mags. Meanwhile every day the papers show us horrific pictures of the reality of what is really going on in the world. And we dont have a clue nor inclination to respond. {Just keep buying those handbags}

Ginamig – Took a look at Kathy Van Zeeland’s website. Really cute bags! Thanks for sharing the info!

cecilia on

I’m a very petite woman and the bag would just be too much.
I really like it though.

Angela Seal on

I love it! Its totally cute, but seeing that i’m only like 14 i can’t really afford it…i think i’ll just stick with coach and kathy van zeeland!

Amanda on

I would never be seen with that bag. I am not a big red fan so i would have to say it is ugly
