Red Carpet Trendwatch: Short Dresses at the SAGs

Usually when you talk about red carpet fashion, “gown” is the operative word — long, sweeping, floor-grazing gowns. But this year, there have been more frocks, party dresses and even minidresses on the red carpet than ever before! It started at the Globes with Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Jessica Parker and Renee Zellweger all wearing dresses just below-the knee. But at the SAGs, the hemlines crept up even more. From Rachel McAdams’s super-short white trapeze to Heather Graham’s gilded Oscar de la Renta to Reese’s sexy sparkling sheath, there were more than a few stars showing off their well-toned legs on the red carpet. As with any style, some were successful, while others stumbled (Heather: if you can describe them as “stripper shoes,” leave them at home). Tell us: What do you think of short dresses on the red carpet? Are they fresh-looking or inappropriate?

See all the SAG behind-the-scenes and after-party fun at our Red Carpet special!

Would You Pay More For Eco-Friendly Clothes?

H&M, Topshop, Forever 21 — many of us are addicted to quick-fix shopping at stores where the trends are up-to-the-minute and the prices (and quality) are super-low. Where our mothers might have bought investment pieces meant to last for years, we pick up pieces that are meant to pass out of style — and our wardrobes — in a matter of months. But an article in the New York Times this week points out the environmental effects of so much discarded clothing and how much energy is expended in the production and care of so many garments. From switching to polyester to clothing rentals (much like the purse rentals we recently wrote about) to spending more and less frequently, the retail industry is gearing up to make some eco-friendly changes. We want to know your opinion. Will you spend more money on environmentally friendly clothes? Would you participate in monthly rental services? Are you concerned enough about the environment to change your closet?

P.S. You can read more on this topic at one of our favorite blogs, TreeHugger.

Red Carpet Trendwatch: Hugh Laurie’s “Pink”-ie Ring

If during Hugh Laurie’s humorous acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, you found yourself wondering “What is that pink ring on his pinkie?”, you weren’t alone. It turns out that it’s the Promise Ring, created by the Susen G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and unlike some of the pricier bling we’ve seen on the red carpets, it’s available for only $5 at komen.org with all proceeds going to fund research. With the SAGs coming up this weekend, we’re wondering who else we’ll spot in a charitable mood — nominees Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker have already previewed the rings for themselves.

Which Snow Boots Heated Up at Sundance?

Ask any veteran Sundancer what their fashion must-have is and they’ll echo Kyra Sedgwick, “Warm boots, for sure.” But not just any old boots — there were a few clear footwear faves at this year’s festival, and it’s a sure bet that we’l be seeing these again next winter. Think of this as your 2007 hot boot preview.

-Rubber Duck Snowjogger: Already loved by Jessica Alba and Hilary Duff, these water-resistant slip-on boots were actually designed for running in the snow. But, it looks like festival-goers Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Cheryl Hines and Tara Reid used them more for slowly strolling down Main Street. Get them at rubberduckbrand.com, $80.

-Earth Shoes: “Oh my god, these shoes are cute AND they tone my butt? I am totally going to wear them underneath my scrubs,” said Katherine Heigl as she scooped up her white Orbit boots, $108. The good doc was referring to the “Negative Heel Technology” which positions the heel slightly below the toe, leading to better stability and calorie burning potential — part of what made these 70′s era staples. Teri Hatcher and Justin Timberlake scooped up pairs that you too can get at earth.us.

Predict-a-Gown: What Will Cate Blanchett Wear on the Red Carpet?

Cate Blanchett has red carpet fashion-watchers buzzing with her high-profile appearance, alongside Katie Holmes, at the Armani Prive show last night in Paris — does this mean that the SAG and Oscar-nominated actress is selecting one of Giorgio Armani’s elaborate couture creations, like this beaded grey silk gown, to wear to an award show? Or is she really in Paris to pick from another one of the couture collections showing this week? Let the speculation begin! Will she make the ultimate red carpet entrance in this dramatic Christian Dior? Will she signal “serious actress” in this moody Givenchy? Or will she go for bold color, as she did in 2005 in her yellow Valentino, in this canary chiffon Lacroix? Metallics also look great against Cate’s pale complexion, so why not this shimmering Elie Saab or this platinum beaded Chanel gown? One thing we can count is that this is one actress who isn’t afraid to make a major statement!

Beyonce’s (& Oprah’s & Gwen’s) New Tool: The Beauty Blender

If you haven’t tried the BeautyBlender makeup sponge, you are in for a surprise. This egg-shaped makeup applicator was created by two young Hollywood makeup artists who were tired of using regular old makeup sponges. It has no hard edges, so makeup (foundation, blush) doesn’t streak as you blend it in. And the pointed tip can be used to apply concealer under the eyes, on a spot or in hard-to-reach places, like around the nose and mouth. Makeup artists are nuts for this thing — as are Oprah, Gwen Stefani and Beyonce. To buy the Beauty Blender makeup sponge, $20, visit beautyblender.net or victoriassecret.com.
