Muffin Tops And Corsets: Tyra Banks' Style Tips

01/31/2007 at 05:00 PM ET

After 17 years in the fashion business and dealing with her 30 pound weight gain, this week’s PEOPLE cover subject Tyra Banks has figured out a few key ways to stay looking good. Here are Tyra’s top tips:

1. Give up Super Low-Rise Jeans. “This whole low jeans thing is not a good look,” Banks says. “Even the smaller girls are going to have a muffin top. I recommend a higher jean and darker colors.”

2. Spanx Your Booty. “I’ve got dimples in my booty. There’s nothing wrong with Spanx or control tops. And if you can handle it, there’s nothing better than a corset. Find someone who can lace it up for you, it pushes everything down and up.”

3. A Cinch in a Snatch. “That’s what my stylist Yaniece and I call being locked into the cinched belt. My breasts are getting bigger so if I get loose clothing, it looks too unshapely. You ask ‘Where’s the body?’ Even when it’s out of fashion, wear it!”

4. Let Your Personality Shine, Not Your Clothes. “Women, don’t wear anything shiny or satiny. Those kinds of materials catch the light and makes [you] look bigger.”

Tyra is a beautiful woman. I think she always will be no matter how much she weighs. Good for her for comfronting the media. This weight issue has got to go. It is causing too many young girls to die b/c they want to be so thin. This has got to stop.

Kimq on

Tyra is GORGEOUS!!
So what she gained 30 lbs…it’s not like she is deathly skinny like Nicole Ritchie.
Ms. Bootilicious Banks IS what a model whould be…and a wonderful role model for women everywhere. If I wanted to look like any model- I’d want her dimpely butt and big boobs anyday!!
Keep working it Tyra..through 30+ lbs. We still love you!!

Elda on

When I was younger I could eat anything now that i’m older i have to watch my weight, etc.!! I admire woman like Tara because she makes me feel normal!!

astoreri on

Tyra looks great, I wish I could look that good in the 160′s! You know what would make me really happy? To see a women of that size win america’s next top model.

But what is up with her hair??? She needs to cut it and ditch that harsh centre part. And the colour makes her look like she is going grey and it completely washes her out. She needs to go shorter and darker!!!

Axelle on

Tyra is pretty, with an outstanding personality. However i must say that i do not reaaly like this hair color on her. It makes her look aged, washed out and takes away from her beauty, guys i’m sure you all will agree with me. I prefered her previous hair color. I hope that she changes it at least for spring. Much love miss Banks!

jaime on

Tyra is so cool She Doesn’t care if she gains some weight and she is a good role model and she looks pretty no matter what

Angie on

I’m not into her hair color it makes her look old,and her eyebrow color is bad to, but she is beutiful, and I dont think she is fat.

Dawn on

I Love Trya looks like a real woman. Thank you not all women or young girls can be a size 4 and shouldn’t feel like they need be.

Dodie on

She looks kinda like Jane Seymour in this picture, especially through the eyes. She definitely beautiful. I don’t think the hair color makes her look older at all.

Jenna on

The hair and eyebrows are awful. She looks so old!

Liz Shelton on

I think that Tyra is fabulous! She is normal and loving life! ALl those years of starving yourself? Now she is a normal size and still awesome. Thank you Tyra, now when my girls turn on the TV, they won’t see unhealthy stick girls. They will see Tyra and want to be like you. YOU ROCK!!

Kristen Y on

Tyra is a goregous woman and should switch up her look as much as she wants to. She looks a little older, but that’s
okay,because she still looks nice.

Rudy on

I just wanted to add a brief comment here- a lot of you are saying that Tyra is looking older. Well, of course she is! It’s called natural aging beauty, and we all will go through it at one time or another. It’s your choice how you work with it- this beautiful and confident woman is choosing to live on with her life despite all the hype about “oldness” syndrome and weight gain. Yes, I’ll admit she looks different than when she was younger; but that’s only because she has grown and developed even more. You go Tyra! Thanks for giving us (young and old alike) a different image to look up to, other than drugged, wasting-away, wanting to stay forever young “role models”. Thank you, thank you, thank you- a million times thank you, Ms. Tyra Banks.

Tyra is beautiful. I am so proud of her for standing up to the scrutiny. She doesn’t need to change, the industry does! I remember when I was 13, there was an article I read about Paula Abdul looking ‘enormus’ at 133lbs. I happened to be 133 lbs. I remember crying because that article was basically calling me enormus. I started dieting. I couldn’t lose more than 12lbs by conventional method, and although my doctor said I was healthy and right where I needed to be, he didnot stop me from pursuing my quest for thiness.( The media’s idea of health, beauty and vitality).
I developed an eating disorder that nearly cost me my life. Keep strong Tyra! Stand up to these bastards! I hope more celebrities follow your lead.

i do not like Tyra Banks at all. she is obnoxious. BUT i have to say from what i have seen from her, she is handling the criticizm over her weight gain with class. You can tell she is a very confident person and that is great for these young girls to see.
If we saw her walking down the street she probably would still look skinny to us regular folk!
Remember when Anna Nicole disappeared as she was gaining weight and then bam! she was everywhere and she had to weigh close to 300 lbs. now that was a damn shame.

Betty on

Three Cheers for Tyra !!!! She is real. Thank you, Tyra, for standing up for real women — the woman who keep this world turning, the women who get up every day and do what needs to be done, the women who want to love their bodies inspite of what the media tells us.

REESE on

NOW WE KNOW TYRA DONT JUST “TALK THE TALK, SHE WALKS THE WALK”………..BUT MORE IMPPORTANTLY WHAT IZ UP WITH HER HAIR IT LOOKS TO SYNTHIC,TO MUCH DYE(THEY TRIED TO CORRECT IT,BUY IT MADE A TURN FOR THE WORSE),TO LONG,AND SO NOT HER,SHE IS TOO “TOP MODEL” FOR THAT HAIR……

Jean Tennessee on

I love you Tyra for making the transition from super-model to super-tv business woman (with 2 hit shows). Can’t say the same for too many other ex-models. Don’t pay attention to the media who constantly criticize even the average-size American woman. At 5’4″, 190 lbs, I am very comfortable with myself. I wouldn’t ever want to be less than 165 lbs. (I love the food that corporate American offers to us). If a woman is comfortable with herself, she doesn’t have please anyone but God.

Lisa on

I think Tyra looks great with the added 30 lbs. She is a healthy beautiful woman and I am so glad someone is finally standing up to the tabloids, magagizes and new papers that have a way of making women feel that they are over weight if they weigh over 125lbs. She is a great role model for young girls who feel they need to be thin to be pretty. Keep up the good work Tyra!!

night on

I’ve always thought Tyra was pretty, but until now I did not like her. I have to admit that I was wrong. Not only is she pretty on the outside, she is beautiful on the inside as well. I saw her video, and it brought a tear to my eye. It’s a shame that a woman has to defend being a normal weight. She is not fat, yet has to defend herself and other women who don’t have clavicles that can cut paper. Thanks to Tyra for opening my eyes to how beautiful she is on the INSIDE. I always knew she looked good on the outside…at ANY weight.

j on

is that a wig?! i hope it’s a wig b/c it needs to be disposed of asap..!

JOSIE on

I THINK TYRA IS BEAUTIFUL. IT IS WONDERFUL THAT SHE STOOD UP FOR HERSELF AND FOR ALL WOMAN WHO ARE NOT A SIZE 2 AND 4. I WEIGH 160 I AM 5’6 AND I AM A SIZE 8. THERE IS NO WAY I COULD EVER BE A SIZE 4. I AM NOT FAT AND I DO NOT THINK THAT TYRA IS FAT. ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE FUN OF HER I THINK WE SHOULD TAKE THEIR PICTURE AND PUT THEM ON THE COVER OF MAGAZINES. LET’S SEE HOW SMALL THEY ARE. TYRA THIS IS WHY EVERYONE BACKS YOU. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL THE WAY YOU ARE.

kat!e from FSC on

i love tyra, and that she isn’t afraid to call out the media and our culture’s obsession with weight and beauty. keep doin what your doin tyra, and i’ll keep watching your show!

Alice on

Yeah, I was looking at Tyra’s hair color on tv yesterday and it looks awful. I don’t even know what color you would call that, its like a non color.
Now, I don’t care if Tyra gains weight, she still obviously looks great, but now I’m getting tired of hearing about it. She is the one that keeps bringing it up again, now its starting to feel like a publicity stunt.

Gina on

It’s about time someone took a stand against the media. Tyra, I commend you for being a voice for women of all ages, sizes and color. Perhaps w/you shining some light on the issue of weight and the affects that it has on our youth will cause the media to take a look at the issue more seriously. Too many of our young children are dying to be thin. Not everyone was meant to be a size 0. And, we, as women, both young and old should be very careful w/our comments re: the sizes and shapes of our youth. Everyone is unique and beautiful in his or her own right. Tyra, again, thank you, and by the way, your body is banging…you’re beautiful and a joy to watch. Much success w/your show and all your future endeavors.

Tyra,

I am so impressed by the positive stand you have taken with the reporters and negative writers that tried to bring you down. You are a amazing and bueatiful women and from all the women in Taunton, Massachusetts “You Go Girl!!!”

Jill on

Tyra,

Thanks for standing up for all women-regardless of size. Beauty should not be measured by our jeans size but what we represent and believe in and you my dear are a truly beautiful individual. Aren’t there more important issues this media could direct America’s attention to, like Cancer research, AIDS, or the homeless in our Country. Sounds to me like they are bored!

Janine Chisinco on

I’m a skinny girl, and have always admired curves, I just wished more women understood how beautiful every body style is, maybe Tyra will finally help women with curves see how beautiful they are.

Judy on

I admire Tyra, she’s a positive role model for young girls.
Sorry but i have to comment on her recent hair color, not sure if it’s supposed to be blonde but it’s too light, it doesn’t look good on her.

seananq on

Good on Tyra Banks for standing up for women of normal healthy weight. Astoreri states Tyra’s weight is in the 160′s, this is right in the middle of the healthy weight scale for a woman who is 5’10″ tall. This is what a healthy woman of the correct weight liiks like people. Get over the thin is everything and lets celebrate women who are healthy and at a realistic weight.

Tracie on

Tyra is great! I love the new hair color!

Heather S. on

I love what’s going on in the media lately, with Tyra Banks fighting back and ABC’s Be Ugly campaign. I developed an eating disorder in high school that worsened in college, and I always thought I was “fat” even though I stayed around a size 2 (5’9″, 123 lbs). I’m now 130, and for once I feel comfortable with myself and I love that my body feels powerful now–I’m doing a triathlon this summer, which I would not have had the energy and stamina for before.

The great thing about Tyra is that she’s not the type of pretty that makes you jealous or hurts your own ego, she’s the type of drop dead gorgeous with the personality to match that makes you feel like its ok to be you and helps you to feel sexy!

Annie on

Tyra is gorgeous . Who cares if she gains weight- she is still healthy and that is the most important thing.

Jane on

I appreciate part of what Tyra Banks is encouraging. But corsets? Corsets? They can be pretty harmful to the body. It’s not significantly better than starving oneself. Maybe instead of dressing slim, dressing to enhance ones body.

belinda on

True beauty comes from within. If the media and the world would view people from this aspect maybe so many people would not be hurt from insensitive comments.Tyra and any others out there that have been critized
ALWAYS KEEP YOUR HEAD UP,NEVER GIVE INTO OTHERS THOUGHTS OR OPINIONS ABOUT YOU,PRAY FOR THOSE WHO OFFEND YOU BECAUSE OBVIUOSLY THEY NEED IT

Cindy on

Tyra, I give you a lot of credit for this. The fashion world has to realize that real women do not look like tooth pixs. Clothes look better on a shaply women then a woman who looks like an ironing board. Having a shape like your’s,Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez show real women have curves. The world is made of all types. The fashion world has to stop being prejudice against those that have some meat on their bones.

Susan Lopez on

I am the mother of 3 beautiful girls ages 21, 17 and 14 and I have been dealing with self-image issues with them since they were young girls. I am so grateful that Tyra chose NOT to starve herself and instead lashed out at those who made negative comments about her. She is beautiful just the way she is! This whole ordeal has given me an opportunity to talk to my daughters (especially my 17 year old who is in the middle of two “skinny” sisters and thinks she is fat because she has a totally different body type than they do) about this very important issue! Thank you Tyra!

BC on

WOW LOVE the hair color…it looks stunning! congrats TYRA we love you!

Mary O'Grady on

I love Tyra for her heart and her bravery, but what about us women who are not as young or in shape? You know what? They can kiss my fat ass too!

Miss V on

You go girl, now it’s time for the media to respect a healthy (full figured) woman. Ya look great!

Jeanne on

Tyra is beautiful, inside and out. I don’t understand what the big deal is. So, I’m 10 lbs overweight…people call me pudgy, round…etc. etc. I’m built like Marilyn Monroe..no one ever called her that.

Elle on

As sad as it is, our children and even us adults are horribly influenced by the media. Thank goodness Tyra came out and took this head on. She is NOT fat and it’s great to see that non-celebrity people think so! My 12 year old daughter who is 5’6″ and wears a size 5 has been told by other girls she was fat! A size 5 at 5’6″! This is what our beloved media has done.

Elle

Ginger on

I was shocked to see this photo of Tyra…for being a woman of such beauty and style, why would she opt to color or lengthen her hair this way? Beyonce she’s not, nor should she want to be. Tyra has always shown such style and class, and this hair is not working that image for her at all. Tyra, please go back to a more natural look! As for your current size and weight gain, I don’t think you’ve ever looked better. Please don’t fall prey to the criticism, and feel you need to lose weight, because you look wonderful! You go girl!

karen on

YOU GO GIRL! I THINK YOU LOOK FAB-U-LOUS!! I RESPECT YOU FOR BEING STRONG AND NOT LET ANYONE TEAR DOWN YOUR SELF-ESTEEM. I WATCH BOTH YOUR SHOWS AND YOU ENCOURAGE ME TO LOVE ME AND ACCEPT ME THE WAY I AM. IN MY 20′S I WAS A SIZE 2. NOW I AM IN MY 30′S AND A SIZE 12-14 AND I LOVE MY BODY!! THANKS TYRA !! I HOPE TO HERE FROM YOU SOON.

P.S. YOU ARE WONDERFUL ROLE MODEL TO ME AND THOUSAND OTHER GIRLS AND WOMEN!!

nish on

I love Tyra!!! i think she is soooo cool for telling critics to kiss her fat ass!! I definitely look up to tyra because she has a great personality and she’s gorgeous.

Kristel on

Tyra… I think you’re great and you look fabulous! Model industry should finally accept the fact that skinny models are not beautiful at all and it is not healthy and also it is a bad role model for young girls! You are, I think, the first one who is brave enough to say that a few pounds more does not make people ugly! I really admire you for that and since I am not a skinny person myself, then your speech really inspired me! Thank you for that! :-)

julia on

It’s finally time to change what magazines are doing to women! And Tyra is our mascot, we need a strong, beautiful and HEALTHY woman to set things right. Women are beautiful in all shapes and sizes, and this has gone on way TOO LONG! Its time to start boycotting these magazines until they start putting HEALTHLY WOMEN on their covers and inside their magazines! GO TYRA-our fearless leader!!! KEEP UP ALL THE GREAT WORK!

rebecca j on

tyra rocks!!!!! i love her and think that she is a terrific role model for myself and other young women. she is a beautiful person inside and out, no matter what size!! we all just need to remember that all of us, no matter if u r a celebrity or not, have our own struggles that we face each and every day. stay strong tyra!! we all love u!!!!!!! :)

sherri on

Good for you Tyra, you are an excellent role model! I am so sick of the critics who constantly poke fun at any celebrity/actress/model who gains some weight. If Tyra were to starve herself, she would be accused of being anorexic – there is no pleasing these people!

As far as I’m concerned there is nothing to be proud of if the size of your clothing is zero. What’s next, clothing sized with negative numbers? Is that for the girls who want to disappear entirely?

Julie on

Tyra Banks is awesome!!! Kudos to her for standing up against those critics!! She is beautiful!

cher on

I love Tyra. She’s very real and never shies away from anything.

ema on

hey,i really thiks that she looks good and sexy enough. I have to agree to what she just said in her video..it’s true that most girls tend to go skinny these days, which lead to unhealhty lifestyle.to feel good about yourself, you must be healhty. I really got to say that most celebrities too aren’t healhty, seriously,i really respect Tyra for loving herself.

Marcy on

A REAL CLASS ACT – Tyra has earned my respect and I am so impressed with how she is handlng the tabloid headlines. I didn’t realize how much it makes a difference posture and angles make. Thank you for speaking out, fighting back and not hiding in a bathroom leaning over the toilet or living on lettuce. You speak for many of us who aren’t media targets.

Serena on

I think she should lose the weight before she gains anymore and die her hair to a darker colour it looks like she’s gone gray. Let’s just hope she doesn’t end up looking like Janet jackson when she was fat. Or become anorexic like the olsen twins.

livinnlaughin on

Amen sista! now with so many girls callling their skinny bodies fat, and starving till there is no flesh left and beyond that. it is so nice to see someone at a healthy weight and proud of it. keep right on eating! you look beautiful!

Sarah Glen on

I doubt Tyra is happy with her weight gain. In fact, I don’t think many people are. I too gained 30 lbs and am terrified I might gain more. Weight gain is unhealthy. I think she needs to worry more about health and cholesterol than the numbers on the scale. I also think many that felt fat compared to her before are secretly happy at her weight gain. People hate you if you’re fat and hate you if you are thin. People are mean.

Tayme on

Tyra is beautiful. There is nothing wrong with her body. She holds herself well and is confident. I’m glad she stood up to the media and told them how it IS. The media is really nasty. They take pictures of you in the privacy of your home or you going to the beach, and they feel they have the right to just snap pictures of someone and then sell them to papers, and then the magazines write hateful comments, whether it be someone is old, drunk, anorexic or fat. The whole idea is to make others feel comfortable in their own skin and not to be like some celeb. We are who we are, and that isn’t gonna change a dang thing. We should learn to accept every flaw about ourselves, but also realize how beautiful we are. Instead of promoting anorexia and bulimia amongst young girls and women today (and even men), we should be promoting healthy lifestyles. Enough of this plastic surgery or diet pill junk. I can stand over on the other side, because I suffered from eating disorders and took so many diet pills just to be perfect and look like what I thought was beautiful. Tyra is an inspiration. I watched her show the other day, and she was discussing body issues with young girls. Can you believe a 9 yr. old girl was worried about her weight, and she was only 50-something pounds? She wanted to be a model, so she would starve herself. This is what young girls are today, even the 9 yr. old girls. Then you have heavy girls being called names, because of her weight. This is no way society should be, some can be so cruel. Until people start accepting curves and natural big boobs, things will never change. We should be promoting healthy lifestyles and promote healthy bodies, whether they are curvy or not.

matilda marin on

girl u look good dont worry bout that i feel you though i use to weigh 111 had two kids now weigh 160 husband be talking bout youre fat i have a hard time finding clothes to look good i was use to being like a model put anything on and look good now im 24 and i enjoyed those y ears now all i have to say is they can kiss our fat asses because youre right personality is what counts and to me im still it even though he be hatin

I LOVE U SO MUCH TYRA!! U MAKE ME FEEL GOOD ABOUT MYSELF AND YOU MAKE ME LOOK BLOODY NORMAL…UR A SUPERWOMAN~

K. on

Ms. Banks
Thank you for speaking. We need to change the value that our society has placed on the the idea of an ideal woman or ideal woman’s weight. You have made a worthy contribution by presenting a positive role model who accepts the way a woman’s body changes. Our different shapes, sizes and make-ups should be celebrated and embraced. While we can all strive to be as healthy as possible, it is important that we learn to relax about our appearances and realize that it can still be fun to PLAY dress up. I applaud women like you, Mo’Nique, Queen Latifah, Beyonce, Tocara, Jennifer Hudson, and Mia Tyler. You are all strong women who have displayed confidence, strength and beauty when your weight or any other physical attribute has been brought to judgement because of your professions. It is because of your celebrity that we depend and appreciate your voice and example. Thank You Again.

Izzy on

Dear Tyra:

The issue is not that “you still look beautiful”. The issue is that you have improved your already gorgeous insignia. You are glowing – healthy- like more regal than ever! You look younger and even in love.. (seriously!)

I personally used to find you a bit too thin. And you know, thin women tend to have a grumpy look on their faces
(probably un-beknownst to them).

You now look like a classic image of a goddess, like Lena Horne – like Ava Gardner…womanly!.. I am certain that more, many more men are salivating – I am- and i am one straight woman- let me tell ya.. The fashion world is run by misogynist gay men who want women to look like boys and miserable thin femaile editor in chifs who have control issues– to starve oneself is built in self-hatred and can never celbrate the sensuality of life that g-d has granted us… to see a boisterous healthy gal like you shows the reat of western culture that she lives, eats and breathes well in the moment. I am very proud of you. I support sensuous nutrition that can convince you that it ain’t diet food- no way! (I am a chef and writer)

Yours
Izzy

Tyra is a great roll model for so many women, she looks great.

i agree, anorexia is not the way to go!we should love our body types, and take good care of ourselves!no matter our pants size… we can still work it out so we can look divine! theres nothing wrong wit being a size 11…thats wat i say…..that just means we are full-figured…not fat! Tyra is setting a good example for the next generations…i just hope other famous people can do the same thing too!

sandy on

There are no words toe xpress my appreciaiton to Tyra for her honesty about her weight. I wish more super stars would allow themselves to just be who they are, to be real. MS Banks has actually given me hope for the future of all women not just women in the industry, because we are all caught up in the weight issue. Thank you Tyra Banks for being courageous enough to be yourself.

Tyra is is smart, strong successful woman and beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. I applaud he stand on the weight issue and wish more people would see things like she does. She is just as gorgeous now as she was 30 pounds ago. Beauty is not a size.

Shannon on

I think more celebrities should divulge their weight. I no longer feel like jumping off a bridge because I don’t feel like I fit in because I am not a stick! Tyra, and Oprah, have both done so much to make women feel comfortable with who they are, and not worry about who they aren’t.

What I don’t understand is why there are so many negative comments on here. You people are no different than the press. If you don’t have anything nice to say, why say it? Let’s stick with the positive.

Judith on

Tyra, I commend you for standing up for yourself to the media… I personally think you have never looked better. It is a shame that for decades their has been such an emphesis on women and their weight! Leave us alone! Back in the days it was all about the velouptous women and they did’t wear a size 2/6 and they were beautiful… I also appreciate that Tyra has decided to bring in some curvy young women into ANTM this season. It is about time, the industry decided to allow some curvy gals a chance!
I have watched young women go thru changes to become thin or stay thin and it is devasting. The pills, bindging that lead to eating disorders, anorixia, and in some cases death! I believe there is something very wrong going on in a world when women are being programed to think that being thin is more important than dieing…

Sharon on

Way to go Tyra! Most women in this counrty aren’t beanpoles. Tyra looks healthy and beautiful.

Tyra is gorgeous no matter what size or shape! The hair color is another story, very drab and doesn’t scream “I’m Tyra and I’m beautiful!!”

I used to think Tyra was just another one of those airhead models that are portrayed as such in movies and television, but she’s really not. She’s strong and independent and she also really cares. She’s a fantastic role model for teenage girls and the like.

I love Tyra… Shes beautyfull, intelligent, funny… But the most important thing, is that she has a lot of self steem… It´s a good example for a lot of young girls to follow… And the people that say that she’s fat, they’re crazy… She’s not fat, she’s curvy, and looks like a real woman… She has the luck, that she doesn’t have to be super skinny, for her body to look the way it does…Keep working it girl… U rock!!!!

Tyra Banks is a stunning woman who is living her life in the spotlight. If people think she is fat that’s their opinion, but my opinion is that they are really stupid. She looks great. She looked great at the start of her career and she looks great now. I can’t believe that the same tabloid magazines that reported only weeks ago on the deaths of anorexic fashion models took this photo and pounced on a fashion Icon who made it through those very pitfalls. I don’t like that she is being unfairly attacked but, I guess diamonds would’nt sparkle unless they underwent tremendous pressure.

shaheen on

tyra banks is the hottest woman. everyone is just jealous

Teya on

Tyra looks good. The thing about size is that it really doesn’t matter how big or small you are, as long as you are proportioned and wear the right things to accentuate your figure. Tyra’s got it going on!

elle on

Now, this lady is pretty. She still feels very sexy with a little extra weight on. And she knows it. Good going Tyra.

Brooke on

GO TYRA!! I love how she can stand up for all those people in the world who feel fat or ugly… she is a great rolemodel!

rosa figueroa on

I think no one should be judging anyone. As long that you have confindence/strengh/love/determination in yourself. You as an individual can acommplish anything you want.

rachel b. on

Tyra has high self-esteem but that doesn’t mean she has to gain weight because she is retired and not care. She is hurting her image a little.

jenann on

The world needs more Tyra’s, beautiful women willing to stand up against the pressure to be too thin. She’s obviously healthy, most certainly not overweight, and thank goodness she’s willing to be such a positive role model for women throughout the world. Our society’s growing obsession with health has digressed to become a celebration of the too thin, and girls across the nation are suffering — even dying — because of it.
Way to go Tyra!!!

lynonyemah on

Tyra you rock, i am a woman who is constantly thinking about being fat but after i watched your interview and how you attacked the tabloid. it made me proud of being a black and beautiful fat woman. keep it up.

Ning on

So what she gained 30 lb. She is a beautiful woman. However I think she shouldn’t deny her weight gain and play the numbers game on Larry King show.

shelly on

sorry, I don’t believe it. I think she weighs more than 161 pounds. There I said it.

HOOOORAY for Tyra!!! I wasn’t a huge Tyra fan until this past week, THANK YOU, THNAK YOU!! Thank you for standing up to the stick figures and all they represent! As I grow older my body gets a little bigger, and I don’t care! I don’t want to be obese, but I am not worried so much as to what my weight is, I just want to be healthy!! So, I eat most of what I want and excercise!! Thank you Tyra for showing that we’re all beautiful no matter what our waiste size is!!! MUAHZ!!!!!!

I have to send a big thank you to Tyra.

We know as a one time Victoria Secret model your current stance could not have been easy, yet you stand proud and beautiful.

My 10 year old daughter has always loved you in the last few seasons of ANTM and she has no Victoria’s Secret prior image yet of you. She just loves how you POP!!. She loves your show because of you, your confidence and your sassiness.

Thank you for being the role model she realistically can identify with.

Be well, stay strong.

trya is fat. period. F-A-T fat. its embarrassing really, because she is so fat and she plays it off likes shes not. she has rolls and curves in every which place. and then she plays it off like a HUGE DEPRESSING THING has happened to her- by being so overweight. Well, tehre are plenty STRONGER more emotionally secure women out there who are HEAVIER. Maybe Tyra is so insecure because no man loves her. At all.

Rachel on

TYRA!! Thank you, thank you, thank you…I just read your spread in the latest people mag. and I commend you for being one of the few healthy positive role models for females today. You, unlike everyother startlett in Hollywood, has embraced your natural body and not taken extreme measures to look like a skeleton, in which so many young females compare themselves. The sad thing is that someone had the audacity to call you fat in the media…You are by no means fat, overwieight, or any other insane degrading name. You are healthy and curvy and beautiful…and that is why you are wanted sexually by almost every heterosexual male with a pulse…and i am sure lots of females as well;). What man would want a bag a bones as a girlfriend?? Could you please address this weight issue again on your talk show and try to reach out to both celebs and society so females can quit feeling insecure and pressured to be an unrealistic size?? Rock on Tyra!!

jcsmith on

I applaud Tyra as well, she says what needs to be said, but did everyone miss little Katy Muma up there who is a teenager at 90 lbs and trying to lose more? Katy dear, you ARE brave like Tyra-you came out and told all of us what is happening to you, and that takes a brave girl. That boy is talking out, well, not out of his mouth, anyway. One less beautiful woman to be bullied by a (young) man who’s a slave to a distorted standard of beauty. Don’t buy into it!

SB on

She’s one of these people that just looks sexy, regardless of her weight. And the fact that she’s standing her ground, well, she clearly has courage too.

I am a woman, and frankly, the emphasis on body image is
trying – why does society and the media choose to investigate women and their weight? i think it is an interesting question.

frankly, i think we should give each other a break.

I am all for Tyra’s promotion of a “normal” body size. at 5’10″ and about 160 pounds she is normal. I have no problem with people who are normal weight for their statue height. but I do have a problem with obesity. I work in the healthcare field and I have a problem with the notion everyone is promoting that big is beautiful. it is a dangerous idea, almost as dangerous as bulimia, etc. I just read this one women’s comment and it said that she was 5’4 weighing 190 pounds and she was proud of her body. unless it is all muscle which i doubt, She needs to lose weight, or she would run the risk of having diabetes, hytension, and cardiovascular problems later on in life. I see people who have to shoot themselves up with insulin and take 4 different pills everyday. I dont suggest dieting. I believe in healthy eatting changing snacks to healthier choices such as fruits and yogurts and increase your exercise. I used to weigh 145lbs when I was 13yrs old and I am only 5’3′. I lost weight when i was 14 and now i weigh about 115-120lbs. I am not skinny. i am about a size 4. i am 21 today. So i know losing weight requires alot of discipline but if you are obese, you need to lose weight before your body develops of the illnesses associated with obesity.
cheers (I am not trying to offend anyone, but merely trying to warn people who are obese that there are serious consequences).

I think she looks great i just wonder why all of the sudden she has gained sooo much weight.. id on’t think she will ever look bad. She has always kept her body PERFECT and then all of the sudden shes losing control of it.. but i must say.. i would way rather her gain weight then become a pole like mary kate and ashley. i think she is a great role model for every woman out there.. u should ALWAYS be happy and comfortable with ur body and weight!

thx Tyra.. u are an insperation.

I think people need to stop hating. If she wants to look like that live her. it’s her problem not ours. she’s smart and pretty, something that many people need from this page. That’s all we need; ugly women giving opinion to models. if tyra feels happy the way she is, let be. Tyra is my faborite actress and model. That all I have to say.
Stop hating people it’s not your life.

Mahogany-35 on

Tara ALWAYS looks fabulous. The additional 30lbs does not lessen her beauty, it enhances it( she did gain not 75-100lbs).
The issue of models being to skinny is now gaining a lot of attention. I feel alot of them are too skinny, it looks unhealthy at times. I hope this changes in the globally.
Tara will always be someone who young girls and women want to emulate.

CIRKYA on

i love Tyra and i think she is gorgeous, but that hair looks very ugly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isolde on

Tyra looks AWESOME! She does not look fat at all, but she also does not look like those skinny, half-dead stars that we have nowadays. I agree with anyone who said that the media is being cruel to Tyra. These days, people are either made fun of for being “fat,” i.e. being over 115 pounds, but if they get thinner than about 110 pounds they are called “anorexic” or “scary-skinny.” Personally I would rather be called “fat.” I am naturally a small, skinny person, and I don’t eat a lot of food because I simply cannot eat as much as my friends who are bigger than me. I have been called an anorexic before, and it really hurt me. I would rather be called fat but look like Tyra.

Jessika on

WHAT’S WITH THE GREY HAIR?! When I first saw her with this hair colour…I actually thought she had pantyhose on her head for some reason.

Anke on

Tyra Banks is a beautifull woman, the people who said: This has got to stop; are speaking folish. The girls who want to be so thin, are not happy whit how they look now. Thats there problem. Leave Tyra Banks alone and get youreself a life!

Tyra is doing it all…really inspiring for women young & old(er)…lol. I don’t care for the hair, but I’m sure it’s only temporary. Keep making us proud gurl!

Tyra Banks = Beyonce Knowles. They’re f*kin HOT!

M. Washington on

I am very proud of Tyra for loving herself enough to be able to say “Hey, I gained weight, and SO WHAT!” I think she is incredibly mature and it makes her all the more beautiful because she has realized what true beauty is, it is not determined by weight or other cosmetic ordeals, but instead by a brilliant personality, intelligence, and a heart to help others, which Tyra does on her show constantly. She is even a better role model now than when she walked the runway because she is helping girls to relax about starving themselves and to show them to celebrate the shapes they’ve been given to work with. Go Tyra! You have my total support!

Ashleigh on

i think it great that tyra promotes a healthy image to girls my age!! i am soo sick of the whole size zero obsession here in england and think it is inspiring that she doesnt aspire to be something she not!!

Dahlia on

I love Tyra no matter what! she inspires me

Deanna on

I think that all this attention to Tyra’s weight gain is the most ridiculous thing. All you hear about is how more and more young women are developing eating disorders in this country to feel better about their bodies. Well, we finally found a role model to help these young girls and look what the media is doing: ridiculing her! How do we expect to overcome the problem if we are insulting the answers?

ALSO tyra has watched her weight for many years as a model. If she wants to finally eat now, I say let her; its her body. You go girl!

gloria on

I THINK TYRA GIVES WOMAN A POSITIVE LOOK AT THE WORLD.WITH ALL THE FASHION MAGAZINES TELLINGYOU THAT IT IS OK TO LOOK LIKE YOU ARE DYING TO BE BEAUTIFUL, WHAT ARE WE TEACHING OUR CHILDREN? SHE REALLY STANDS UP FOR ALL WOMAN AND IS SETTING A NEW STANDARD. I APPLAUD HER FOR HER HARD WORK AND TRUELY CARING FOR PEOPLE.SHE IS AN AMAZING AND SHOULD CONTINUE WITH THE FIGHT AGAINST MODELING STANDARDS.

tronotia on

I love Trya! I think it is very commendable of her to simply be herself. Who says and why is it deemed sexy for a woman to be a size ” 0 “. I am a size 16 and I know that I am sexy and beautiful and when and if I decide to go on a diet it will be for me and no one else. Ladies be YOU and if that is not a size that the public may think is exceptable ” Oh Well “, now I do think we should be healthy but also be happy!! You only pass this way once so be true to you while you are on this journey of life WHY? because once it is over its over…..You go Tyra be the best you you can be and do not allow anyone to steal your identity or your uniqueness God made you YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you’re so wonderful and beautiful tayra! im a plus size girl myself.. and i also look up and shine! i love my clothes and i dress up and hot for all occasions! Everytime i hear you talk you just give me that extra ummfff!

tyra thinks she is all that. when in fact, she’s not. she’s trying soo hard to be Oprah. her show is just a poor second to Oprah’s. i hate her. i loved her at first. but after a few weeks of watching her show, i realized that she’s not a good host at all. she intimidates her guests and instead of listening to them., she scolds them and gives ‘em a piece of her mind. who wants to know what she thinks anyway?she’s just a model. that’s all she ever will be. she doesn’t have a college degree, unlike Oprah. she is so accusing and thinks she knows everything. hell, she’s just doing this just because she is getting fat and nobody wants her to be a model anymore. even victoria’s secret, which she constantly boasts about. and oh yeah, i thinks she’s arrogant and self-absorbed. she thinks her achievements are so wonderful. yeah, yeah. it’s nice being a model and all but it’s practically a profession for people who want to flaunt what they’ve got and make people feel sorry about themselves coz they’re not a size zero.

well tyra,sorry.

i don’t like you and i never will.

i hope your show gets cancelled. it sucks!

Tyra – 2 God be the Glory!!!!
Thanks for encouraging women to love and take care of themselves. I’ve already be overweight, and I am now 42 years old. I am trying to get down to an even 200 lbs and with the meds that I take it has been a difficult role, but I will not stop.
When I watched your show on Friday, and you were encouraging women to LOVE themselves, and you were not encouraging individuals to remain overweight but to be healthy.
I could agree with the woman who wanted to take her life due to very very very low self esteem. I felt that I was never pretty enough, my figure was not 36-24-36, my skin color was not right, I found more things wrong with me than what was right w/me; like my personality, etc. But at 18 years old I had and older gentlemen who was 42 at the time to tell me that if I did not love me how can I expect someone else to. He also told me that I had alot to offer. Just to let you know, now I can say, “SO WHAT!!!!” I truly love me for me……

Keep encouraging/reminding us Tyra. :)
