Muffin Tops And Corsets: Tyra Banks' Style Tips

01/31/2007 at 05:00 PM ET

After 17 years in the fashion business and dealing with her 30 pound weight gain, this week’s PEOPLE cover subject Tyra Banks has figured out a few key ways to stay looking good. Here are Tyra’s top tips:

1. Give up Super Low-Rise Jeans. “This whole low jeans thing is not a good look,” Banks says. “Even the smaller girls are going to have a muffin top. I recommend a higher jean and darker colors.”

2. Spanx Your Booty. “I’ve got dimples in my booty. There’s nothing wrong with Spanx or control tops. And if you can handle it, there’s nothing better than a corset. Find someone who can lace it up for you, it pushes everything down and up.”

3. A Cinch in a Snatch. “That’s what my stylist Yaniece and I call being locked into the cinched belt. My breasts are getting bigger so if I get loose clothing, it looks too unshapely. You ask ‘Where’s the body?’ Even when it’s out of fashion, wear it!”

4. Let Your Personality Shine, Not Your Clothes. “Women, don’t wear anything shiny or satiny. Those kinds of materials catch the light and makes [you] look bigger.”

You go girl, now it’s time for the media to respect a healthy (full figured) woman. Ya look great!

Tyra is beautiful, inside and out. I don’t understand what the big deal is. So, I’m 10 lbs overweight…people call me pudgy, round…etc. etc. I’m built like Marilyn Monroe..no one ever called her that.

As sad as it is, our children and even us adults are horribly influenced by the media. Thank goodness Tyra came out and took this head on. She is NOT fat and it’s great to see that non-celebrity people think so! My 12 year old daughter who is 5’6″ and wears a size 5 has been told by other girls she was fat! A size 5 at 5’6″! This is what our beloved media has done.

I was shocked to see this photo of Tyra…for being a woman of such beauty and style, why would she opt to color or lengthen her hair this way? Beyonce she’s not, nor should she want to be. Tyra has always shown such style and class, and this hair is not working that image for her at all. Tyra, please go back to a more natural look! As for your current size and weight gain, I don’t think you’ve ever looked better. Please don’t fall prey to the criticism, and feel you need to lose weight, because you look wonderful! You go girl!

YOU GO GIRL! I THINK YOU LOOK FAB-U-LOUS!! I RESPECT YOU FOR BEING STRONG AND NOT LET ANYONE TEAR DOWN YOUR SELF-ESTEEM. I WATCH BOTH YOUR SHOWS AND YOU ENCOURAGE ME TO LOVE ME AND ACCEPT ME THE WAY I AM. IN MY 20′S I WAS A SIZE 2. NOW I AM IN MY 30′S AND A SIZE 12-14 AND I LOVE MY BODY!! THANKS TYRA !! I HOPE TO HERE FROM YOU SOON.

P.S. YOU ARE WONDERFUL ROLE MODEL TO ME AND THOUSAND OTHER GIRLS AND WOMEN!!

I love Tyra!!! i think she is soooo cool for telling critics to kiss her fat ass!! I definitely look up to tyra because she has a great personality and she’s gorgeous.

Tyra… I think you’re great and you look fabulous! Model industry should finally accept the fact that skinny models are not beautiful at all and it is not healthy and also it is a bad role model for young girls! You are, I think, the first one who is brave enough to say that a few pounds more does not make people ugly! I really admire you for that and since I am not a skinny person myself, then your speech really inspired me! Thank you for that! :-)

Women are beautiful in all shapes and sizes, and this has gone on way TOO LONG! tyra rocks!!!!! i love her and think that she is a terrific role model for myself and other young women. she is a beautiful person inside and out, no matter what size!! we all just need to remember that all of us, no matter if u r a celebrity or not, have our own struggles that we face each and every day. stay strong tyra!! we all love u!!!!!!! :)

Good for you Tyra, you are an excellent role model! I am so sick of the critics who constantly poke fun at any celebrity/actress/model who gains some weight. If Tyra were to starve herself, she would be accused of being anorexic – there is no pleasing these people!

As far as I’m concerned there is nothing to be proud of if the size of your clothing is zero. What’s next, clothing sized with negative numbers? Is that for the girls who want to disappear entirely?
