Muffin Tops And Corsets: Tyra Banks' Style Tips

01/31/2007 at 05:00 PM ET

After 17 years in the fashion business and dealing with her 30 pound weight gain, this week’s PEOPLE cover subject Tyra Banks has figured out a few key ways to stay looking good. Here are Tyra’s top tips:

1. Give up Super Low-Rise Jeans. “This whole low jeans thing is not a good look,” Banks says. “Even the smaller girls are going to have a muffin top. I recommend a higher jean and darker colors.”

2. Spanx Your Booty. “I’ve got dimples in my booty. There’s nothing wrong with Spanx or control tops. And if you can handle it, there’s nothing better than a corset. Find someone who can lace it up for you, it pushes everything down and up.”

3. A Cinch in a Snatch. “That’s what my stylist Yaniece and I call being locked into the cinched belt. My breasts are getting bigger so if I get loose clothing, it looks too unshapely. You ask ‘Where’s the body?’ Even when it’s out of fashion, wear it!”

4. Let Your Personality Shine, Not Your Clothes. “Women, don’t wear anything shiny or satiny. Those kinds of materials catch the light and makes [you] look bigger.”

Good on Tyra Banks for standing up for women of normal healthy weight. Astoreri states Tyra’s weight is in the 160’s, this is right in the middle of the healthy weight scale for a woman who is 5’10” tall. This is what a healthy woman of the correct weight liiks like people. Get over the thin is everything and lets celebrate women who are healthy and at a realistic weight.

I love what’s going on in the media lately, with Tyra Banks fighting back and ABC’s Be Ugly campaign. I developed an eating disorder in high school that worsened in college, and I always thought I was “fat” even though I stayed around a size 2 (5’9″, 123 lbs). I’m now 130, and for once I feel comfortable with myself and I love that my body feels powerful now–I’m doing a triathlon this summer, which I would not have had the energy and stamina for before.

The great thing about Tyra is that she’s not the type of pretty that makes you jealous or hurts your own ego, she’s the type of drop dead gorgeous with the personality to match that makes you feel like its ok to be you and helps you to feel sexy!

Tyra is gorgeous . Who cares if she gains weight- she is still healthy and that is the most important thing.

I appreciate part of what Tyra Banks is encouraging. But corsets? Corsets? They can be pretty harmful to the body. It’s not significantly better than starving oneself. Maybe instead of dressing slim, dressing to enhance ones body.

True beauty comes from within. If the media and the world would view people from this aspect maybe so many people would not be hurt from insensitive comments.Tyra and any others out there that have been critized
ALWAYS KEEP YOUR HEAD UP,NEVER GIVE INTO OTHERS THOUGHTS OR OPINIONS ABOUT YOU,PRAY FOR THOSE WHO OFFEND YOU BECAUSE OBVIUOSLY THEY NEED IT

Tyra, I give you a lot of credit for this. The fashion world has to realize that real women do not look like tooth pixs. Clothes look better on a shaply women then a woman who looks like an ironing board. Having a shape like your’s,Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez show real women have curves. The world is made of all types. The fashion world has to stop being prejudice against those that have some meat on their bones.

I am the mother of 3 beautiful girls ages 21, 17 and 14 and I have been dealing with self-image issues with them since they were young girls. I am so grateful that Tyra chose NOT to starve herself and instead lashed out at those who made negative comments about her. She is beautiful just the way she is! This whole ordeal has given me an opportunity to talk to my daughters (especially my 17 year old who is in the middle of two “skinny” sisters and thinks she is fat because she has a totally different body type than they do) about this very important issue! Thank you Tyra!

I love Tyra for her heart and her bravery, but what about us women who are not as young or in shape? You know what? They can kiss my fat ass too!
