Muffin Tops And Corsets: Tyra Banks' Style Tips

01/31/2007 at 05:00 PM ET

After 17 years in the fashion business and dealing with her 30 pound weight gain, this week’s PEOPLE cover subject Tyra Banks has figured out a few key ways to stay looking good. Here are Tyra’s top tips:

1. Give up Super Low-Rise Jeans. “This whole low jeans thing is not a good look,” Banks says. “Even the smaller girls are going to have a muffin top. I recommend a higher jean and darker colors.”

2. Spanx Your Booty. “I’ve got dimples in my booty. There’s nothing wrong with Spanx or control tops. And if you can handle it, there’s nothing better than a corset. Find someone who can lace it up for you, it pushes everything down and up.”

3. A Cinch in a Snatch. “That’s what my stylist Yaniece and I call being locked into the cinched belt. My breasts are getting bigger so if I get loose clothing, it looks too unshapely. You ask ‘Where’s the body?’ Even when it’s out of fashion, wear it!”

4. Let Your Personality Shine, Not Your Clothes. “Women, don’t wear anything shiny or satiny. Those kinds of materials catch the light and makes [you] look bigger.”

I’ve always thought Tyra was pretty, but until now I did not like her. I have to admit that I was wrong. Not only is she pretty on the outside, she is beautiful on the inside as well. I saw her video, and it brought a tear to my eye. It’s a shame that a woman has to defend being a normal weight. She is not fat, yet has to defend herself and other women who don’t have clavicles that can cut paper. Thanks to Tyra for opening my eyes to how beautiful she is on the INSIDE. I always knew she looked good on the outside…at ANY weight.

I THINK TYRA IS BEAUTIFUL. IT IS WONDERFUL THAT SHE STOOD UP FOR HERSELF AND FOR ALL WOMAN WHO ARE NOT A SIZE 2 AND 4. I WEIGH 160 I AM 5’6 AND I AM A SIZE 8. THERE IS NO WAY I COULD EVER BE A SIZE 4. I AM NOT FAT AND I DO NOT THINK THAT TYRA IS FAT. ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE FUN OF HER I THINK WE SHOULD TAKE THEIR PICTURE AND PUT THEM ON THE COVER OF MAGAZINES. LET’S SEE HOW SMALL THEY ARE. TYRA THIS IS WHY EVERYONE BACKS YOU. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL THE WAY YOU ARE.

i love tyra, and that she isn’t afraid to call out the media and our culture’s obsession with weight and beauty. keep doin what your doin tyra, and i’ll keep watching your show!

Yeah, I was looking at Tyra’s hair color on tv yesterday and it looks awful. I don’t even know what color you would call that, its like a non color.
Now, I don’t care if Tyra gains weight, she still obviously looks great, but now I’m getting tired of hearing about it. She is the one that keeps bringing it up again, now its starting to feel like a publicity stunt.

It’s about time someone took a stand against the media. Tyra, I commend you for being a voice for women of all ages, sizes and color. Perhaps w/you shining some light on the issue of weight and the affects that it has on our youth will cause the media to take a look at the issue more seriously. Too many of our young children are dying to be thin. Not everyone was meant to be a size 0. And, we, as women, both young and old should be very careful w/our comments re: the sizes and shapes of our youth. Everyone is unique and beautiful in his or her own right. Tyra, again, thank you, and by the way, your body is banging…you’re beautiful and a joy to watch. Much success w/your show and all your future endeavors.

Tyra,

I am so impressed by the positive stand you have taken with the reporters and negative writers that tried to bring you down. You are a amazing and bueatiful women and from all the women in Taunton, Massachusetts “You Go Girl!!!”

Tyra,

Thanks for standing up for all women-regardless of size. Beauty should not be measured by our jeans size but what we represent and believe in and you my dear are a truly beautiful individual. Aren’t there more important issues this media could direct America’s attention to, like Cancer research, AIDS, or the homeless in our Country. Sounds to me like they are bored!

I’m a skinny girl, and have always admired curves, I just wished more women understood how beautiful every body style is, maybe Tyra will finally help women with curves see how beautiful they are.

I admire Tyra, she’s a positive role model for young girls.
Sorry but i have to comment on her recent hair color, not sure if it’s supposed to be blonde but it’s too light, it doesn’t look good on her.
