Muffin Tops And Corsets: Tyra Banks' Style Tips

01/31/2007 at 05:00 PM ET

After 17 years in the fashion business and dealing with her 30 pound weight gain, this week’s PEOPLE cover subject Tyra Banks has figured out a few key ways to stay looking good. Here are Tyra’s top tips:

1. Give up Super Low-Rise Jeans. “This whole low jeans thing is not a good look,” Banks says. “Even the smaller girls are going to have a muffin top. I recommend a higher jean and darker colors.”

2. Spanx Your Booty. “I’ve got dimples in my booty. There’s nothing wrong with Spanx or control tops. And if you can handle it, there’s nothing better than a corset. Find someone who can lace it up for you, it pushes everything down and up.”

3. A Cinch in a Snatch. “That’s what my stylist Yaniece and I call being locked into the cinched belt. My breasts are getting bigger so if I get loose clothing, it looks too unshapely. You ask ‘Where’s the body?’ Even when it’s out of fashion, wear it!”

4. Let Your Personality Shine, Not Your Clothes. “Women, don’t wear anything shiny or satiny. Those kinds of materials catch the light and makes [you] look bigger.”

I think that Tyra is fabulous! She is normal and loving life! ALl those years of starving yourself? Now she is a normal size and still awesome. Thank you Tyra, now when my girls turn on the TV, they won’t see unhealthy stick girls. They will see Tyra and want to be like you. YOU ROCK!!

Tyra is a goregous woman and should switch up her look as much as she wants to. She looks a little older, but that’s
okay,because she still looks nice.

I just wanted to add a brief comment here- a lot of you are saying that Tyra is looking older. Well, of course she is! It’s called natural aging beauty, and we all will go through it at one time or another. It’s your choice how you work with it- this beautiful and confident woman is choosing to live on with her life despite all the hype about “oldness” syndrome and weight gain. Yes, I’ll admit she looks different than when she was younger; but that’s only because she has grown and developed even more. You go Tyra! Thanks for giving us (young and old alike) a different image to look up to, other than drugged, wasting-away, wanting to stay forever young “role models”. Thank you, thank you, thank you- a million times thank you, Ms. Tyra Banks.

Tyra is beautiful. I am so proud of her for standing up to the scrutiny. She doesn’t need to change, the industry does! I remember when I was 13, there was an article I read about Paula Abdul looking ‘enormus’ at 133lbs. I happened to be 133 lbs. I remember crying because that article was basically calling me enormus. I started dieting. I couldn’t lose more than 12lbs by conventional method, and although my doctor said I was healthy and right where I needed to be, he didnot stop me from pursuing my quest for thiness.( The media’s idea of health, beauty and vitality).
I developed an eating disorder that nearly cost me my life. Keep strong Tyra! Stand up to these bastards! I hope more celebrities follow your lead.

i do not like Tyra Banks at all. she is obnoxious. BUT i have to say from what i have seen from her, she is handling the criticizm over her weight gain with class. You can tell she is a very confident person and that is great for these young girls to see.
If we saw her walking down the street she probably would still look skinny to us regular folk!
Remember when Anna Nicole disappeared as she was gaining weight and then bam! she was everywhere and she had to weigh close to 300 lbs. now that was a damn shame.

Three Cheers for Tyra !!!! She is real. Thank you, Tyra, for standing up for real women — the woman who keep this world turning, the women who get up every day and do what needs to be done, the women who want to love their bodies inspite of what the media tells us.

NOW WE KNOW TYRA DONT JUST “TALK THE TALK, SHE WALKS THE WALK”………..BUT MORE IMPPORTANTLY WHAT IZ UP WITH HER HAIR IT LOOKS TO SYNTHIC,TO MUCH DYE(THEY TRIED TO CORRECT IT,BUY IT MADE A TURN FOR THE WORSE),TO LONG,AND SO NOT HER,SHE IS TOO “TOP MODEL” FOR THAT HAIR……

I love you Tyra for making the transition from super-model to super-tv business woman (with 2 hit shows). Can’t say the same for too many other ex-models. Don’t pay attention to the media who constantly criticize even the average-size American woman. At 5’4″, 190 lbs, I am very comfortable with myself. I wouldn’t ever want to be less than 165 lbs. (I love the food that corporate American offers to us). If a woman is comfortable with herself, she doesn’t have please anyone but God.

I think Tyra looks great with the added 30 lbs. She is a healthy beautiful woman and I am so glad someone is finally standing up to the tabloids, magagizes and new papers that have a way of making women feel that they are over weight if they weigh over 125lbs. She is a great role model for young girls who feel they need to be thin to be pretty. Keep up the good work Tyra!!
