Scarlett & Nicole Start A Trend: 60's Printed Dresses

01/31/2007 at 06:00 AM ET

We’ve hit that time of winter where those of us in chilly climates can only dream longingly of wearing summer clothes — and sixties-style printed dresses are at the top of our list. Bright colors — like Scarlett Johansson’s fuschia– and swirling patterns –like Nicole Richie’s baroque flowers — add major pop to simple shapes. Wear them now with tights or bust them out when the weather gets warmer with a great pair of wedges.

Get the Look:

Star Splurge: Get a real Pucci like Scarlett’s from net-a-porter.com, $1380, or try this beaded mini from Milly at bergdorfgoodman.com, $435.

Investment Pieces: Get groovy with a T Bags dress from irissinger.com, $175, or get some flower power with this Rebecca Taylor trapeze from pinkmascara.com, $371.

Style Steal: Get the look for way less with this knit shift from bebe.com, $79 or this bright babydoll from forever21.com, $38.

Get it on eBay: You’ll usually find some affordable knockoffs mixed in with a few vintage originals here. Search for Pucci Dresses on eBay.

The only thing with those is you have to be careful that you don’t bend forward and when you sit down you have to keep your legs really close together. I saw a pic of my neighbour in one of those dresses years ago and she was sitting down and you could see her undies. It really should of stayed in the sixties cause this dress is great for perverts. I realize they are called baby doll but atleast bring them back wih maybe 3in added on.

The minute I saw this pic of Nicole I was hoping you would give more info on it. I love the dress. Thanks!

i like both dresses very much. Nicole Richie is really gross looking. she is way way too skinny. every picture you show she is going to lunch or coming from lunch. This girl (supposedly) eats more than anyone else i know. If she is having that much of a problem putting on weight eat some cheesecake for Goodness sake.
Scarlett on the otherhand is just perfect!

Ewww , Hate the dress !!

WOW I have never seen Nicole look so CLEAN and FRESH she looks wonderful in this photo and I love the dress too!

Elda on

Love the dresses and both look very nice with them on.

I love that dress on Nicole. I think it is super cute!

Pucci anything is cool. i only own a scarf at this point, but i love scarlett’s dress! nicole’s dress is horrible. she’s starting to look nasty again w/that hair color, etc.

I love these dressed. If only I were petite and slender, I would wear them, too! Both Nicole and Scarlett look wonderful!

I like Scarlett’s, with the regular collar, better than the mock turtleneck on Nicole, but I agree with the poster above who said these are a nice way to cover up without looking like you’re grandma (I’m paraphrasing).

I love the dresses, but, they are way too short! I could never pull anything like that off- even with tights… but they look nice and fresh.

Karin on

I’d love them with jeans, but these are waaaay to short for an everyday person to wear!

I think Nicole’s dress has a really unusual pattern—very unique, and I like it a lot. On the other hand, Scarlett’s dress looks like it’s straight out of my mother’s closet, and it was a dress that looked double-ordinary 35 years ago. So, yes to Nicole—and no to Scarlett, who still manages to look bland even in bright colors!

Nicole Richie looks like she wearing Wedgewood….I wonder if she knows Wedgewood high heels do in fact exist!!
Then she would be the perfect collector’s item.

As for Scarlett’s get up, I am just glad it’s not the 60’s we’re living in right now, for fashion sake that is!!!

The 60’s was a great decade for everything, but the fashion is still in serious question!

Do we actually know who makes Nicole Richie’s dress? Is it also Pucci? Thanks!

Nicole looks amazing!! I love the pattern, colors, and cut of her dress! I think it’s really important that the top half is more conservative becuase it balances out all of the leg she is showing. I don’t like the style or color of Scarlett’s though. I think that this is a style where you have to be rather flat-chested to pull it off becuase it’s such a ‘cutesy’ dress, and it looks awkward on Scarlett

These girls both look very cute. Love Scarlett Johansson, she always looks great. Nicole Richie looks very sweet and put together, the blue is very flattering on her.

Tayme on

Oh wow, I love Nicole’s dress. The blue is nice and I like the pattern. The collar and sleeves on her dress are nice too. I love Scarlett, but I’m not fond of the color and the pattern. Someone posted a good idea, these dresses would look decent with a pair of tights or something if you’re scared to show too much leg, you could always cover up using the imagination.

I dont like any of these dresses, they look like very long ugly t-shirts

smile on

nicole looks really cute but i dont care for the look on scarlett since it doesnt flatter her and the color doesnt compliment her skin tone…but i love nicole’s dress and her simple look. i can smell a trend starting i just wish it was a little more wearable.

anna on

i don’t like it and i’m normaly open minded with trends.

Allison on

the dress that Nicole is wearing is by Hermes.

Kristen Y on

I’m not a hater, but I must say that both these dresses
are um’ interesting. I think they make better shirts to paint in.

Dixie Marie on

Do not like the dresses. Either one. Too ugly. Too short!

I like the baby doll look. It fits her body type even though I think she is a bit skinny. Ther’es this site I love it’s satineboutique.com and they have so many different baby doll dresses and cute tops from Tsumori chisato.

Anna on

The 60s are VERY much alive in my closet and i have never gotten a bad remark on my style, quite the opposite… The dresses look great and Scarlett looks better in this then if she were dressing like every other starlet/ normal woman out there.

Erica on

I think Scarlett’s outfit looks complete here. Her smooth black Pantyhose really make it 100%. Without the Pantyhose/tights, it is more like drapery.
