Snacks, Pals & Blackberries: How the Stars Got Ready for the Globes

How exactly does one prepare for hitting the red carpet (and all those cameras)? Here is some chatter we heard from some of our favorite stars at last night’s Golden Globes.

-Heidi Klum in Givenchy: “We started early, at maybe 11 am. I glued on lashes, put on some base, some blush, put the hair up, got dressed. It doesn’t take that long. It’s what I do!”

-Patricia Arquette in Riser Goodwyn: “I brush my teeth — that’s essential. I wash [my] face. It was an all-day affair. My sister [Rosanna] and I were working on it since 10 in the morning.”

- Sheryl Crow in Elie Saab: “My ritual involves a strong cup of coffee, two or three newspapers, and the BlackBerry.”

-Julia-Louis Dreyfus in Carolina Herrera: “The makeup thing I find daunting. I know to hire a really good hair and makeup team. They do everything. I sit there and try to stay as calm as possible.”

-Penelope Cruz in Chanel Couture: “I can do my makeup and hair myself, by myself. I can do my friends’ hair. I’ve done Salma Hayek’s hair many times. You should ask her about that.”

-Jada Pinkett Smith in Armani Privé: “Does this one, my husband [Will Smith], help me get ready? Today we were almost late. He takes his sweet time.”

You Tell Us: Are Beyonce & Jennifer Bests or Worsts?

Let’s chalk this one up to beauty being in the eye-of-the beholder. During the Golden Globes, the concensus here at StyleWatch was that head-to-toe gold sequins ended up looking more showgirl than Dreamgirl on nominee Beyonce Knowles, while Jennifer Love Hewitt looked oddly matronly in her gilded ballgown. Others, like our favorite style guru Tim Gunn, thought they were among the evening’s standouts. Maybe it’s just us, but we prefer just a little bit of sparkle, like the splashes of beading on Jennifer Garner‘s white gown to the elaborate trim on Jennifer Lopez‘s Marchesa gown rather than an all-out golden gown.

What about you: Do you like the all-metallic look? Would you vote Best or Worst for Beyonce and Jennifer?

Red Carpet Trendwatch: White Gowns

Forget Madison Avenue — last night’s Golden Globes red carpet took its fashion cues from ancient Greece by the look of things. From Jennifer Garner’s silver spangled Gucci to Hayden Panettiere’s Monique Lhuillier gold-belted gown, the stars looked like goddesses in their long white gowns with metallic accents. Or there were those who went for clean but never simple white, like Salma Hayek, Azzaro-clad Kate Winslet or Ellen Pompeo in futuristic Versace. We expect to see a lot more ivory, creams, and just bright white with the SAGs less than two weeks away! Tell us: Do you like the white gowns? Is this a look you would wear?

Hugh? Alec? Tell Us Which Guys Had Worst/Best Globes Hair

So as to not be unfair, lets take a moment to muse on the men’s looks from last night’s Golden Globes. Though the prevalence of tuxedos makes it difficult to form any blatant fashion statements, there sure was some variation happening above the collar. Take Alec Baldwin and Hugh Grant, for example, two actors famously known for their thick locks. While Best TV Comedy Series Actor winner Alec kept his graying top perfectly coiffed, Grant seemed to be doing battle with a bottle of gel. What do you think? Any other guys whose looks you loved/hated last night?

What Was Vanessa Williams Thinking?

Retro looks are usually glamorous shoe-ins for the red carpet — unless you are channeling Diana Ross in Mahogany. Or maybe Beyonce in the later stages of Dreamgirls? Whatever the inspiration, Vanessa Williams went for a totally hair-raising look at last night’s Golden Globes, complete with wild curls and braids. Vanessa is clearly a beautiful woman, but maybe a few less extensions would have been a better look. Tell us: What do you think of Vanessa’s hair? Is it a retro do or a total hair don’t?
